I knew something was up....

Recently, I noticed that my contacts' Facebook pictures looke a bit blurry and seemed to have horizontal lines on them. I noticed this a few days ago, but I know they were for sure crystal clear on 1.5, and possibly 2.1a.

Now: Android 2.1 now blamed for some of Nexus One (and now Droid) screen 'issues' | Android Central

Well, it's been noticed on those two devices because those are the only two that officially have it, but we have had it for a bit and a few days ago, I believe it was the Behold that got 2.1 leaked.

On top of that, some people claimed picture quality deteriorated a bit with 2.1. Maybe the camera is the same or slightly better, but again, the screen is causing the problem.

The Droid has confirmed the new update to 2.1 has downgraded graphics processing. The N1 has had screen issues since it came out. They are both using two different screen technologies, with the Droid actually having the better one, according to tests and hardware specs.

So.... anyone else noticing this?

I am still on 1.5 and have been looking forward to the 2.1 OTA but in all honesty if it messes with my camera images I need to find a way not to upgrade. I use my camera all the time since I got the Vignette app, and would not be happy with a decrease in picture quality.

its not horrible, just a little shoddy compared to what it was before.
honestly the good outweighs the bad on 2.1

Where are you viewing the pictures that aren't as clear on 2.1? On the Eris' screen? Or are they not as clear when you download them onto a pc? I was under the assumption that it was only while viewing on the Eris, and not actually the image quality of the picture.

i havent tried veiwing it on my computer. but i have noticed just in the gallery that pictures taken before the update are much clearer than those taken after

I just held mine(2.1) up and my wifes(1.5) up and took some pics. It is very interesting a very much a noticeable difference. On mine, I had it pointed at our tv, it was very washed or white or bright on the screen. On my wifes I could watch it without a problem or any distortion. Then my daughter walked right next to the tv, on mine she was blurry and on my wifes she was not. I did notice that object in the foreground on mine seemed crisper and on my wifes did not.

Perhaps the issue is not so much the 2.1 upgrade messing things up but perhaps has to do with the auto focusing or how it now chooses what to focus on.

The photos in my contacts were taken before root and were fine. Now after rooting and playing with various roms, they same photos are fuzzy...as if not as many pixels. This suggests that it might be something other than the camera. Also, album art is blurrier in music player. The photos is albums don't seem as crisp.

Can we not have pics of green in here? If I get reprimanded for saying "****" and other sentence enhancers, there is no way this thread is gonna stay open for long.

Anyway, I knew it wasn't just me.

Again, as for picture quality, I haven't really paid attention to see pics from now and then, but someone give me a date. I went to the Chicago Auto Show in early or mid-February. Was 2.1 out then? I upgraded the night it came out, which was around 11PM Central. I just don't remember the date. The pictures I took of the cars there were both crappy and really good.

What was really obvious to me was the contact picture from Facebook. When I text my friends, their picture shows up as the contact picture, as does mine. They both look fuzzy and had some lines in it.

Lighting makes ALL the difference with our phones guys.. Since there is no flash, you have to have decent lighting.. On top of that, I noticed it takes better pictures with less applications running.. I'm wondering if it messes with the shudder speed of the lens if you are doing a bunch syncing behind the scenes (which you may be unaware of)..

I've gotten awesome pictures, and horrible pictures with my phone, Both before and after the update.... Ask any photographer, and they will tell you, as long as the lighting is right, (amongst other aspects depending on who you speak to) you can take good quality pictures with some of the worst cameras :)

If you understand a little bit about photography you will get better results, more often. it's a fairly simple camera, As opposed to most of todays "Point-n-shoot" digital cameras that make it INCREDIBLY easy for anyone to snap a perfect picture.. These cameras today have a Lot of technology built in to prevent blurring/red-eye/ghosting/shaking, etc... I wouldn't expect my free phone from verizon to have the same features of a $250 digital camera, which is why they are still sold seperately :)

Make sure your lighting is decent, Touch where you want it to focus on, and Try as hard as you can to hold it as STILL as you can before, during and after you touch the capture button.. You will notice, setting your phone down on a surface will always take a better picture, or using a wall to prop it up against.. Of course there will be times where you can't do this, but just try to keep it as steady as possible.. :)
