Speakerphone Blown... Again

OK, again for the third time, the speaker has went out on my phone again. Tingy blown speaker (speakerphone...not the earpiece). So I took the back off and look at the mesh that covers the speaker. I did see a small bit of metal shavings. I am assuming at this point that this causes the speaker to have issues. Since the last time this happened, I have been keeping my phone is a Ziploc bag at work. The one time I took it out and sat it down, the speaker went out. I am now pretty sure the magnet on the speaker picks up thru the small hole in the back and makes the speaker go.
So what now...A replacement is being sent again. I will have to be super extra careful not to have the phone near any metal shavings. I hope this helps anyone else that may have this issue.
By the way..I did blow out the speaker...no luck...
KEEP AWAY FROM METAL SHAVINGS!!!

Same here got my 4th Eris yesterday. I told a Verizon tech about it and he said he was gonna email HTC with the details I gave him. He suppose to email me back with HTC's response. I personally think it should handle metal shavings. Everyone with an Eris isn't in an office. I'll post the response here if I get one.

LOL...you know what happened to my old phone. The refurb was free and did not go thru Assurion. So why do you think rooting the phone would be better?

Rooting really is better. You can get 2.1 and root access with a ROM. Trust us, do the root. 2.1 sucks and did not live up to expectations. Either root if you plan on keeping the phone, or wait until a better phone that doesn't suck comes around and sell both Erises for $250 each ($500, total) and buy a new phone off contract.

That is what I'm going to do with my spare Eris (which works 100%, long story) and my current Eris, also 100%. The two together could fetch me $700. That's an iPad if I really wanted to.

no i mean what did you have to do with your old phone?
im considering bricking and getting a refurb. i just dont want to have to send it in and then they end up fixing it, see its on 2.1, and give me shit for it :/

and rooting gives EASY free wifi tethering, complete backups, recovery images in case you do brick accidentally, custom roms, and just a shit ton of other apps and things. im a nerd, i jailbroke my old itouch just so i could set the unlock icon to the batman symbol lol. if the device is mine i would like to be able to customize it however i want to, meaning being able to run custom ROMs.

i also wouldnt mind trying to build a custom ROM of my own but i wouldnt want to if i wasnt able to test it myself before releasing it on here

By the sound of it I would really like to root my phone tonight. You both have talked me into it. But with my issues with the speaker's, I would be hesitant to root the phone.

Honestly, I turned this phone in with 2.1. I have no concerns with the void warranty issue. I am one of a trillion people sending in phones every day. If by chance they say something, this forum will be the first to know about it.

I do worry about rooting though, rumor is that its hard to turn a root phone in vs a 2.1 phone. Rumor...most likely..I have never actually seen any post of this happening except at a store. I turn all my phones in over the phone customer service).

if your worried, before turning it in switch it back to the basic sense ROM. it will look the same as the original 2.1, no way to tell its rooted unless they go in and start fiddling around, which i highly doubt. unless the rep notices it right away, i doubt they will ever realize

Well..I guess that's why I buy insurance...just in case of accidents. So which guide do you prefer. I am going to do it tonight...give me all your secrets ;)

By the way...this refurb has a power button that actually sticks out..you all will appreciate what I am saying.

Maybe I assumed wrong that everyone else had the same flat hard to press power button like I have had on 3 different Eris. That's what I was referring to. Thanks for the info...going to root right now....

No, your power button issue is a known one and it comes with wear and tear. Kinda sucks. Mine is ok, it isn't obvious that it's indented and actually doesn't feel bad at all, but eventually, I know, I'll be experiencing it.

As for root, you can unroot it and no one will ever know. You don't need to change ROMs to make it look like the original 1.5, you can go back to 1.5 with no root access.

2.1 is not worth it. I'm telling you. I'll give you apps that beat Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation. That's all you're gonna miss. Actually, there is a 2.1 ROM for root. So you'll have 2.1 and root instead of just 2.1.

It's a no-brainer.

we do have the same flat power button. its almost flush with the body of the phone. so your saying the new one sticks out?

maybe this is indication of the manufacturer still producing the phone despite what we keep hearing about its EOL.

and good luck. do some cool shit for me haha. see if theres a batman lockscreen icon! :D

oh and another cool thing about rooting. you can overclock your phone, making it run faster. might get rid og the lag and all the other speed issues.

Man.....im SOOO close to just saying screw it and bricking my phone. im positively GREEN with envy.

Well...working on it right now. I did get pretty attached to the Nav on 2.1. I am looking at Roms right now. Overwhelming for sure. :D

Hit me up in a PM. I've got an app that does it better. CoPilot.

If you'd like, I can take a look at the ROM selections for the Eris and recommend one for you.

Word of warning for the overclocking: don't go too far with it. I have a feeling deleting apps that came preinstalled, such as Footprints, Voice Dialer, Visual Voicemail, etc. will help speed up the phone. Those are the apps in the background that are always running. Taking those out should cause your phone to always have atleast 60 MB of free RAM, which is what most of us get using a task killer to kill them all off.

agreed. overclocking can seriously kill your phone. but its nice to have the option.
see...im all about options....im not necessarily going to, say jack my phone up to a bajillion Mb/s but i would like the OPTION to.

As far as I know, overclocking isn't possible.....yet. If you're new to rooting, I wouldn't recommend trying to manually remove stock apps, as some of them are tied into other parts of the system and can have some unintended outcomes when removed. It's a lot easier to just load a ROM that they're already removed from and run from that.

If you want to try it yourself, I think there's a list of apps that are safe to remove and maybe even some scripts or instructions for getting rid them in the root sub forum.
