Root [ROM] Stock VM OTA 2.95.652.5 Rooted | Deodexed | Everything Should Work Now!!!

Yes, sorry. I didn't mean to imply that the rom wasn't okay to flash. Just wanted to post a warning about the OTA since he was planning on taking it. ;)
Good point!

And in fact if you are S-ON and have the November OTA installed, if you want to run the stock ROM one of the rooted versions in the OP of this thread will give you the software benefits of the March update without updating the firmware. That might be a good strategy if you are thinking about getting S-OFF but not ready to do that yet.

One last thing. No one is saying that it's not possible to get S-OFF using the wire trick with the 1.58 hboot installed and a stock recovery and unrooted ROM, we just don't know yet.

I'm sorry for the thread derail, I hadn't intended that. I'm perfectly happy to go back and remove my posts if you want. Let me know.

It's perfectly fine :) I added it to the first post so we are fine. It's not off topic to discuss the latest OTA, because well, this is technically the Latest OTA haha

I agree, many factors come into play, OS version, drivers, quality of your machine that is doing the work, so we have to stick to what has the most success rate

For example, I did the wire-trick on a windows 8 x64 machine when it specifically said it won't work. But that doesn't mean that will work for you

I see no reason that it wouldn't work. The wire trick has been done numerous times on 1.58 with the Sprint version. I know you know this :p but I'm just stating it anyway!

Good point, it never actually occurred to me to try a data-only restore (or anything other than a full restore). So said another way: if you're using the same ROM, a data-only restore is kind of the same thing as using a backup app? It begs the question, what's the point of a backup app?
A data only restore doesn't always work. Some system apps use the data partition to store configuration and settings information that may not always be the same from ROM to ROM or even between different versions of the same ROM but if you are using the stock ROM without any major mods installed (such as Leedroid Tweaks) it will probably work.

Another approach would be to use the AppExtractor app from the Play Store that allows you to restore apps, data and settings from a nandroid without having to back them up separately.

I always say, for the best performance/stability, it's best to start fresh. but do as you wish :)

@ramjet, didn't you or someone post the latest firmware bits? can I have a link? or is anything actually updated?

Yea, but we won't know for sure until a VM user does it with the March OTA installed. And does a Virgin Mobile user need the VM ICS version that contains the JBear 1.57.5757 hboot or the Sprint ICS version that contains the Jbear 1.58.5858 hboot, or does it matter?

Maybe someone would like to get on the #juopunutbear IRC channel and ask how to get S-OFF for a VM S-ON user who has taken the March OTA and is stock rooted with hboot 1.58 installed and no RUU available to flash. But that won't be me this time. ;)

Sure. It's linked at the beginning of this post. There are a number of firmware files in that zip and they have all changed somewhat from the November OTA based on their dates and file sizes. The 1.58 hboot, stock recovery and boot.img were removed so that custom versions of those files wouldn't be replaced when S-OFF users flash that zip file.

Make sure it's identified as VM firmware so Sprint users don't try to flash it. You probably remember what happened last May when the VM RUU was leaked and some Sprint users flashed the firmware and never completely recovered. This PG86IMG.zip only has the SPCS_002 CID so it shouldn't flash for Sprint users as is but some people are pretty "clever" about forcing things to install.

OK. I want to try this ROM. Just for the hell of it. So. My plan is to run the RUU. Then take November OTA. my question is after I apply this OTA. Will the new March OTA be available after by going to system updates?
Yes, but if you run the RUU and take both OTA updates you won't really need to flash this ROM if you flash a superuser zip instead, but you can if you'd rather do it that way.

The purpose of this ROM is to allow users to get the benefit of both OTA's, at least for the ROM portion, without having to go through the RUU+OTA+OTA procedure.

First off topic: it says on their chat that windows is no longer supported. So now any version of windows?? Lame.

I tried to be really friendly about it, hoping they wouldn't get all pissy at me, but it still didn't matter. Basically, the answer is if you are s-on and took the OTA you are SOL!

Here is the Conversation:
[09:41] <+Brian706> We have some members who are still s-on on the HTC Evo V (Virgin Mobile) that took the new OTA that just became available. This upgraded their hboot to 1.58.0000 (same as Evo 3d for sprint) Unfortunately there is no RUU available for this update. The only RUU available contains hboot 1.57.0000 and so they cannot RUU because it won't let you downgrade. Will there be an s-off method available for them? I know that the proper porcedure is to RUU, unlock bootloader

[09:41] <+Brian706> , s-off, then root. Unfortunately they cannot RUU once they have taken the OTA. Will this become available to them?

[09:48] <+Brian706> I guess what I mean is, are they just out of luck if they took the OTA? Obviously there is no support for them because they are unable to follow the instructions properly. But is there anything they can do? Or do you have any suggestions?

[09:52] <@ladyx> Brian706: We have nothing to do with OTA's or RUUing. We only support our tools here

[09:52] <@ladyx> We also (as stated in our topic) do NOT talk about future plans

[09:52] <@ladyx> and asking for ETAs is an automatic kick /ban

[09:52] <+Brian706> Sorry. That was not my intention

[09:53] <@ladyx> That's fine. We have no answer to your question. Have a good day.

[09:54] <+Brian706> So to get some sort of an answer, are you saying that s-off is unavailable for them at this time?

[09:54] <@ladyx> I am saying that if it is not on our website we have no answer for you.

[09:54] <@ladyx> We have nothing to do with OTA's or RUUing

[09:55] <+Brian706> Right, I was just giving the background. I understand that. Just giving you the full situation to just verify that s-off was not supported for them

[09:55] <+Brian706> Thanks for your time

[09:56] <@ladyx> We don't support downgrading, we cannot help with RUUing / OTA's, if it is not in the directions on our site we do not have an answer on how they can achieve what you are asking.

[09:56] <@ladyx> We will not speak about future plans

[09:56] <@ladyx> So... no - they are SOL

[09:56] * ladyx AFK

[09:57] <+Brian706> Thanks!

So in case anyone missed it, NO S-OFF if you took the OTA.

This is according to unlimited though. We all know that "won't work" means they have not tested on that exact setup. There's a good chance you can still get s-off, but we won't really know until someone is willing to go for it.... So that's where we are :p

Thanks for checking. Things have really changed at unlimited.io since ladyx joined the team.

BTW, in case you missed it here's an interview with ladyx on pocketables.

As I said on XDA, her picture says it all.

Thanks for the log Brian. I just checked the version of the Linux ControlBear linked on their site, and it's the same as ever. For anyone who wants S-OFF on Windows, I've got it linked on my guide.

The problem comes in with a new hboot. There is no controlbear software for Evo V hboot 1.58. We already know that it works on windows and even on a rooted stock rom. But now we have a new hboot. So what do you do? Use the Evo V controlbear software? Use the Evo 3d software for hboot 1.58? My guess would be to use the 1.58 Evo 3d software, but no one has ever tested it yet... There is no specific software compatible with the new OTA... So we just won't know until someone is willing to experiment.

For now, I would say, don't take the OTA if you are considering s-off. Do s-off first!

I wonder why. I used the LiveCD method, and that's what I recommend to anyone anyways...but that's odd that even Win 7 isn't supported anymore.
Luckily the Evo 3D/V isn't going to change much at this point, we know the current version works with Windows, and for most users even on the 64 bit version when running in 32 bit mode. Given the current attitude at unlimited.io I'm going to leave v0.8 instead of upgrading to the current v0.11 in my all-in-one file for my root/S-OFF guide on XDA since there are almost 5000 downloads now and very few people have reported any issues getting S-OFF.

Are you hosting the windows version software for others to download? I'm not sure what you mean by .8 and .11...but I assume it has something to do wtih them not allowing you to download a windows version of J-Bear anymore.

My root/S-OFF guide on XDA has an all-in-one file that includes the RUU, ADB/fastboot files, drivers and the JBear utility and hboot. I put that together before unlimited.io communicated their policy about redistributing their tools and added a warning about that policy to the startup for the v0.11 version of controlbear.exe. The current download for my all-in-one file still contains the ICS v0.8 version for Windows, which requires rooting before doing the wire trick. I was planning to remove the Jbear stuff with the next update and just point users to the unlimited.io website but I'm not sure now if that's advisable given the changes in policy and procedures at unlimited.io, and now that they have removed support for all Windows versions.
