Your thoughts/expectations of the HTC One (was the M7)

Good news, indeed! AND couldn't come at a better time as my wife's phone has started touching itself again (I JUST changed it about a month ago! ). I sincerely hope that a quality product is produced, and is available soon. I would rather wait another 2 weeks to get a quality product, rather than a questionable one earlier.

A good number of folks here are probably less than a year into their current handsets anyway, & aren't going to rush out on opening day for any phone.

After reading the reviews this afternoon while you all slept, I've decided that this is not the One for me. Initially I fell in love with the aluminum finish, screen and the front facing dual speakers (despite the fact that "Boomsound" sounds like something inter-city teenagers would have come up with back in the early 90s). I also like the look of Sense 5.

But the device is clearly not optimized for me. HTC is marketing to the social media crowd, especially with the camera and Blinkfeed. I take more pictures outdoors, not in dark pubs, so I'd rather have 8-13 megapixels of crisp detail that's not over-sharpened and over-compressed. And I really dislike HTC's arrogance in not letting us turn BF off all together. It's useless to a lot of folks which is quite evident from the reviews and comments. I may have been willing to live with the camera and pushing BF off to the side, but the last two nails in the coffin were the reportedly poor battery life and non-expandable memory.

To bad, because I really want HTC to succeed and I wanted to like this phone. It's an awesome device. It's just not made for me.

So Verizon will be releasing the one, according to the article it's delayed because of "Internal Verizon Testing", more like Verizon deciding what Bloatware to put on the device as well as where to stick their stupid logo. So hold on Verizon customers it's coming.

Good news for us, but it will probably be too late. The gs4 will probably already be released and most will probably flock to it. It is really a shame.

Much is made of the camera. HTC puts a lot of effort into this aspect of their phones. I would have hoped for a dedicated camera button. One press to bring up the function when phone is off, second half press to set focus/brightness (to make foreground lighter/in focus when background is light or distant), full press to trigger the camera. I understand that the antenna design seems to have eliminated cover removal/battery replacement as an option, so the phone should have a 2600 ma battery to totally eliminate battery life as an issue. I don't hear many complaints about phone thickness or weight, but battery life concerns seem to predominate (probably due to HTC's record). I like the phone and find myself rationalizing away these real concerns as I like that the phone is smaller than the Samsungs but has nice features and seems to be a quality build. Maybe next iteration will attend to these concerns.

I like my S3,nice phone,nice enough to not jump on the S4,however....

Not enough to keep me from trading it in for the ONE.

If HTC has any Sense (lol..get it hahaha) they will move Heaven & Earth to get the one out very very quickly...As in March (now) quickly! The more people that get that hardware in they're hands, the more people that will just be wowed! I hope they're paying attention to what just happen here with Samsung and release that shiny beautiful NEW one ASAP!

Well, the S4 had its announcement yesterday, which was always going to attract a lot of blog attention. And it's been delayed, so not helpful (though a few people have received them today ).

OTOH, pretty much every S4 hands-on I've read made a comparison to the One's build quality.

So, compared to the One X -

- twice the CPU power (whether the S4 or T3)

- twice the ram

- twice the internal storage

- twice the number of on-screen pixels

- twice the pixel size in the main camera

- twice the image stabilization axes (I think)

edit - I left off twice as many speakers and twice as many microphone diaphrams (low and high volume levels).

Perhaps they should have called it the 'Two'

Ughhhhh...I have to agree on the One's release going in the same time frame as the S4...Which I think may have some reasoning behind it.

Person goes to store, see's signs for S4, signs for ONE...Plays with both and comes away thinking wow, this one feels amazing compared to the S4, and the speakers....WOW!
I'm going to buy the HTC one.

Problem with that is that HTC should be less concerned with Samsung and the S4 and be more concerned with just getting the ONE into stores and into peoples hands...Just my analogy though

I'll reserve judgement until I see comparisons under a range of conditions, but the obvious expectation is that the S4 will perform well in good light, the One gaining as intensity falls.

I already know the One's camera is good enough for what I'll use a phone camera for

I'm well and truly on the fence about either the HTC One or the SGS4.

I will mainly use the phone for looking at long tracts of text and although I could accomplish that quite happily on my SGS2 or even my SGS3, it does seem the screen on the HTC One will be better. That's a consideration for me.

Battery life is the big thing. I have heard rumours regarding battery life but I choose to ignore them until real world stats start to come in from those that have used the HTC One for protracted periods of time.

The manufacturers guidelines for battery longevity rarely, if at all, ever hit the mark.

I have also heard a rumour of a Samsung Galaxy S4 Duos with dual sim card slots (leaked Chinese pics a day or two ago showed dual sim slots). That right there is the clincher for me. I spend some of the year n the USA and some in the UK and currently carry two phones with me as I need to be reachable on either number. Being able to put two sims in an S4 would seal the deal right there.

HTC One looks great. I like the industrial design. I could almost just buy it on looks alone. I like how HTC phones make substantial evolutions each year. Just having seen the official shots of the Galaxy S4, I was disappointed that they didn't try a new look. To the untrained eye, it could be confused for the S3 or the Note.

I'm impressed that they made the One out of metal. And the one thing that the HTC One addresses that has always bothered me about Android phones is speaker placement. Having the speaker on the back never made sense to me. HTC One gets a lot points for that.

I've always liked how Sense looks. It looks way better than Touchwiz or Blur or even AOSP. And with the HTC One's power, Sense can be good-looking AND fast.

The camera being physically only 4MP doesn't bother me. I'm glad that it can take good low light photos. That's another thing that has always bothered me about cellphone cameras, bad low light performance.

The only thing that I might have an issue with is battery life and the height and width of the phone since I have small hands.

I would usually gripe about not having an SD card slot, but I think 32GB or 64GB is enough for me and probably for most people.

The bad thing is, it's hard for me to imagine HTC making a comeback with this phone. I think it's a better phone overall compared to the S4 but if HTC doesn't market the One enough, they'll be in trouble.

I don't want HTC to go away, I've always appreciated their efforts to innovate.

Never really considered the S4, as I never warmed up to my daughter's S2. Just don't care much for Sammy or Whiz. The S4 would have had to REALLY impress me to sway my thinking, but it hasn't. Build quality is a big deal for me, and even tho both my wife and I been through more than one digitizer each, we both still prefer HTC sense versus Sammy's whiz. =-O

What do I think of the HTC One? Its my next phone for sure (goodbye Samsung 3-phone streak).

In fact the One would be perfect if it was version 4.2 and had a better name but I can live with it.

So IMO HTC is just wasting time at this point! I just really don't get why these Android phone manufacturers don't just give us a date when they announce the phone? Is Apple the only company who's learned all these years?

Apple does a press event and then begins pre sales in like a few days and then releases the phone roughly 2 weeks later. This is just getting ridiculous in this day and age on how Apple is the only one who gets it right.

Without HTC saying a word on this so called delay it makes things just that much more up in the air with no solid date. I feel like I'm back in the original HTC Incredible days where there's no announcement , the phone just randomly shows up at the Verizon store and that's that!

I pre ordered with phones 4 u. Received an email that my one had been posted Thursday evening the 14th . Phone arrived Friday morning.

Well with the HTC one looming on at&t, and me being very excited to pick one up, here's my laundry list of things I would expect it to do well...Hopefully

Stand up to use- Yes we have all heard about the fantastic build quality of the one and it's aluminum body. However I will leave my final verdict up to myself after some use. What I expect is the phone to just handle some minor wear and tear while being housed in a TPU case. My iphone 5 scratches if you breath on it wrong, and the chamfered edges scratch extremely easy, hopefully HTC's one will do better.

Battery use- I'm always near power wherever I am, but I must admit it's very annoying to hear that beeping sound that your phone is almost dead only 5 or so hours into a charge...Especially with light use, ugh drives me nuts. Hopefully HTC has worked some magic with the one and I can get 12-15hrs on a single charge.

Useful camera- Yup I happen to actually use the camera on my phone, and I'm looking forward to actually taking some nice clear crisp shots with my one. I'm not looking to be able to to blow pics up to a poster size image and put them above my fireplace. But I would like to be able to take some nice shots without any camera UI lag and be able to view them on my phone and have them look clear and crisp.

UI lag be a thing of the past- I do not root my phones, or use launchers either, I'm a stock guy and like to pretty much use my phone how it comes out of the box. I must admit I was a little worried about using sense again. However after watching some reviews and seeing blink feed in action, I'm pretty excited and looking forward to using sense again and taking advantage of some of the neat tricks it brings to android. But one thing that does worry me is UI lag, and the fear of HTC's sense overlay slowing the phone down. Hopefully those 2GB of ram and the processor will work well and lag will not rear it's ugly face.

Loud and clear call quality- Something that irritates me is when PHONE manufacturers forget that these devices are in fact PHONES and have to endure the task of making phone calls. It's extremely annoying to have an awesome looking device that has really low call volume, or is just cursed with not having good call quality. Hopefully this won't be an issue with the one.

And lastly, but certainly not least...A good radio inside this beauty! Dropping data and a call signal in areas that have a strong signal is something I will not tollerate. My Galaxy nexus was just terrible, and I would just cringe watching that signal bounce all over the place, up and down, up and down...All while someone with the same carrier but a different phone would have full bars of LTE...Hopefully there's strong radios inside the one and it hold's onto those at&t LTE signals.
