Not Very Happy With My Phone

I had mine for like a week and it was doing the same thing. You should look into rooting your phone. You can install a new ROM on your phone which greatly increased the speed of mine. I love it now, I like it way more than my old iphone.

From my understanding the official TMO ROM is what t-mobile is planning to use as their next release candidate. It's fast, and it comes with some pretty cool apps too.

Here's some links for you...

Root instructions / Backup Flasher:
Android Rooting in 1-click (limited time only… until it gets patched)

I really would consider rooting, but I'm afraid I'd turn it into a brick and not be able to get it back at all. At that point I wouldn't even be able to return it.

I'm going to take it to the a T-Mobile store on Monday and show them how it's behaving. If I can exchange it, I will. When things *do* work, I really like it. Unfortunately, I've only gotten about 3 or 4 hours worth of problem free operation since I've had it.

IDK

I just read through that “one click root” article… and was lost after the first paragraph.

Pretty intimidated. Definitely an absolute *last* resort option.

However, reading it did teach about one thing I didn't know about: rebooting to recovery mode. I did that and, TBH, it seems to have picked up. Of course, this was less than half an hour ago… so we'll see.

/me crosses fingers
Maybe try this walk through, http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/ it also has a video and simple step by step instructions.

Short of rooting the phone, disable "Network based location services" -- that causes a lot of issues.

Also, I have noticed the phone seems to have trouble with portrait/landscape transitions. I know that doesn't help per say, but if you minimize changing the phone orientation while an app is loading that will help.

Also, get a Class 6 microSD card. A number of apps write data to the SD clard which is a Sandisk class 2 and 1/3 of the speed of a class 6.

Are you running the Fresh Face app? I know T-Mo hypes it but it sucks badly, will drag your phone to it's knees. If you are running it or any other home apps try unintsalling and see if that helps.

Also, keep on-screen widgets to a minimum. All I have on my MT3G is the default Google search widget and a couple of notification bar things (Battery Meter, Weather Bug) and my phone flies... no lag at all. I do have to occasionally use TaskKiller to keep thing lean and clean, some things like Market or the Music app don't exit with the back button.

Mostly though, the home screen apps (Fresh Face) are unusably slow.

This phone ABSOLUTELY sucks. I've had 2 already and 3 G1's. Android is not functional and lags incredibly. I can't believe I left Blackberry AGAIN for it. Now I'm stuck...

So I might as well root and flash. Which is the best OS for that?

Remember, they are essentially the same phone (I believe) - so you can't expect too much difference.

I am the worlds most impatient person, and I HATE it when things don't work (I'm one of those annoying angry people who throw things) - so I feel your pain.

However: the G1 is a workhorse for many - and I think you'll be happy when you're rooted and tooted. Have a little look around on the forum, I think some of the admin folks are still on G1's.

I know and realize that. I wasn't expecting anything fancy. I just wanted a sexier phone. I don't want lags and lock ups and stalls. It does all that.

I've researched this enough and it's the phone.

It is probably just your phone. A lolt of people are griping about the phone, but it is an electronic device. Humans beuilt it which means it is impossible for it to be perfect.

There isn't an electronic device that exists, no matter who built or manufactured it that doesn't have problems. Iphone, Android, Windows Mobile, they all have problems.

I bought my first MyTouch 3G and it wouldn't even power on. I took it back to T-Mobile the next day and it still wouldn't with different batteries. Now I have another one. Upset? Yes! Gripe and complain? No! Why? It is a piece of electronic equipment.

So, maybe it's just your phone. Take it for what it is. ELECTRONICS! Try to resolve it with T-Mobile and get it fixed.

Sorry, if I sounded harsh! Hope you get your issue resolved!

I've had the iPhone 3g, and I can't fault it. There are quite a few compromises with it, but in reality it's a brilliant piece of kit.

Give it one last try - root it and get a custom rom. What have you got to lose?

Did and done. I'm running Cyanogen's latest. So far so good. It has made a HUGE difference.

What other ROMs do you recommend that are both really cool & easy to install?

Thank you so much for your suggestions and help. :)

Well said Tyson, I got the MT in july and am very satisfied. This being my first "smart phone" but to me this Guy seems to have more of a operation problem than haveing his own special "feature". I'd give it a factory reset and strip the apps down to a minimum till the problem is solved

My experience is so different that I almost can't believe you have the same phone I do. I've installed 50 some apps, and about as many songs, and it doesn't run any differently than from when I took it home from the store.. I keep reading the lag posts from people and all they do is make me wonder what I am doing differently.. now granted 50 apps and as many songs might not be "power user", but it pretty much more than I can deal with and still have a life and a job.. I suppose I could collect apps that I would never use, just to say I have "X" amount of apps installed.. but then I could also install hundreds of blank text files that would be just as useful and take up space.

I agree with this. I think people are expecting way too much out of phones nowadays and I think I am currently one of those people. Im switching from the blackberry storm to the mytouch in a few weeks. Now that ive experienced the "new" gotta have phone with the storm when it first came out I learned that at the end of the day its just a phone... and you shouldnt expect much more then that out of it
