Risks of leaked version 2.1?

I'm new to android, just got the droid eris a month ago, and I am wanting 2.1 just like everyone else. I can't wait any longer and I had some questions about installing the leaked version..
1. Should I go leaked or root?
2. Can I get the official update once it comes out?
3. Which way is the safest way to update?

Well, I would suggest you root your phone instead of upgrading to the 2.1 leak. It has some bugs in there that will be just a pain to deal with.

I have made a thread in the root section with a Q&A about what rooting is and if you should do it. For the most part, yes, you should.

At this point in time, if you are at 1.5, you can either upgrade to 2.1 straight up or you can root and then have a 2.1 ROM. The latter is the best way, as rooting your phone allows you to tweak settings on your phone that you can not in its current state. It isn't necessarily for tech savy people as you may be able to remove some programs that start up unnecessarily and therefore drain your battery life.

So better battery life, the ability to REALLY customize the look of your phone, like fonts, icons, etc. are just among a few of the benefits.

I explained rather quickly, but if you read the FAQ in the root section for the Eris, it will answer all your questions.

It's up to you, but you can do both - if you are going to do both, root while you are still on 1.5, and then upgrade to 2.1. As far as which... it depends on what you want. Root will give you full admin access to the OS, enabling you to install things that the Eris would not normally run. 2.1 gets you an overall faster experience and things like Google Nav, but comes with a few potential bugs.

2. Can I get the official update once it comes out?

Almost certainly. The OTA should be a different version from the leak; even if it's not, you should be able to install it the same way you install the leak. However, there is a slight possibility that there will be problem; basically, the only place you are going to get a guarantee that the 2.1 OTA will work is from VZW, and since they don't support the leak, you do run a (very small) risk with the leak.

3. Which way is the safest way to update?

Depending on whether you are talking about rooting or installing the leak, there are instructions in stickied threads on this forum.

I really would recommend this. I don't think anyone on this forum would take 2.1 over the root. Custom ROMs are in the root subsection too.

Don't worry about the official 2.1 update from Verizon themselves. It's a topic beaten to death on here and at the end of the day, no one knows but everyone speculates. Rooting the phone with a 2.1 ROM will make you forget about the OTA as rooting is the best thing you can do for your phone.

You don't need root for that. You would go to your settings and turn off all the flashy stuff like animations. Lower brightness, sync your accounts less often, etc.

If it still persists after that, as well as crap battery life, then there is a list of known programs that are safe to remove from the phone but also start up in the background if they are not removed. Using this list, delete these programs and it should permanently free up space on the phone so it isn't so over-worked all the time.

The ROM you choose is also important as well. Some are very well built and have little to no bugs. You would just look at feedback left by other users on the ROM to determine if it's nice looking and fancy but crap on battery, or truly a well-engineered ROM. If there are no bugs in there, then speed should be very good.

I just found out today that the overclocking app does not work for the Eris. That is also a big thing, since bumping the processor up while uninstalling bloatware would significantly decrease lag and increase battery life.

Btw no one in their right mind would suggest leak update over rooting. With rooting you get the benefits of both the second leaked 2.1 update and super user privlidges.

Now that I think about it, it's probably best that those that have actually rooted and are running custom ROMs tell you this one. I wouldn't want misguide you.

In addition to members' advice, take a look and see what you like and run it by them. Not all ROMs get the attention they deserve.

Yeah there are a couple bugs on the leak, which can't be fixed....maybe the official OTA will fix that but I would say go with root, if there is ever a problem the community will push the fix a lot faster than VZW would and with root you can customize the phone to your hearts liking.

Not to scare you, or anything, but this official update from VZW is supposedly coming, but who knows how long it'll take? It's best to use what you have access to now, and that is rooting capabilities. Most people on here are NOT on root because they upgraded to the 2.1 leak as soon as it was out, and a week later, the root was found. There is no way to roll back the 2.1 leak to 1.5. Again, most people on this forum are in this boat.

Hopefully you've gotten the root to work successfully. Just ask around the root section for small things.

You can only rollback from 2.1 leak if you are rooted. If you aren't rooted then you are sol and are stuck with the 2.1 leak until the OTA update comes out, which may or may not update your phone. At least with a rooted phone you have the option at any time to go back or use an updated rom with the latest and greatest features. But once you go to 2.1 leak and are not rooted you are screwed. Thats the boat smacky was reffering to.

Imo its root or nothing. You don't want to be stuck on the 2.1 leak without other options. Either leave it how it is and get the OTA update or root your phone, those are your ONLY 2 options imo, otherwise you are just gambling with your phone. Feel lucky do ya, punk? Sorry i had to do it.

Someone had a question about the nand file. At what point should you make a nand backup so you can go back? Does it have to be before you put on a ROM, or can you do everything, make some changes, have a new, custom ROM and have it all working perfectly and then make a backup? This is so that you can go back to 1.5 if need be after putting a new ROM.

A member asked me and I did not know. Not the right section, but screw it.

You can do it at anytime. Personally i did one right after the recovery mode was installed which is step 2 in the guide. Once you do that you can go back to that point anytime in the future in case you mess something up. One thing i've learned is you can never have too many backups. They don't take up much space and are sorted by the date you created them. I also do a backup after installing a new rom once i get it how i like it, and then again later on if i add apps, contacts, change settings, etc. It would be nice to be able to edit the backups name within the recovery console when you make the backup, but you could do that after the fact once the backup is made. Anyhow you can make a backup at ANY time, and most people who make roms tell you to do that in the first step of the installation of a new rom just in case something does go horribly wrong.

In a nutshell:

1. Backup before installing a new rom

2. Backup when you have things setup the way you like it

3. Backup before doing any major changes.

4. Backup just for the hell of it, its kinda fun

Thanks guys for all the help! I decided to install the leaked version but then i realized "oh shit! this doesnt have all the things i wanted" so even though im loving it i wish i had rooted, even though rooting sounds alot harder... haha

It ain't that big of a deal. You probably won't have time to sit and try and discover every single feature anyway.

2.1 had a bug where the speaker would go out after every x number of calls, forcing you to restart the phone. Otherwise, You couldn't hear the other person, and you had no audible ringtone. Be careful, now.

I use my phone a ton for calls and I haven't had the voice bug as of yet (knock on wood)
