Arghhh! This is so frustrating! Can someone tell me what's going on with my email list. I am on Verizon and have Cox as my internet provider. I'v had many smart phones but have never had this problem before. I am looking at my emails and all of a sudden they are just deleted before my eyes. My wife has this problem also since we both just updated our phones to Ssung Note and Galaxy S3. Are there settings that I am not aware of? I have searched everywhere but can't seem to figure this one out. Please help before I lose my sanity! Thanks

Check "period to sync" in your email settings. NOT sync frequency but period to sync. For example if you have that set to one day your phone will delete emails after one day.

Can you expand on this explanation? Why does "period to sync" cause auto deletion ? Is it deleting because the email has been deleted on the server? Is this an intendd function or a bug ?

Samsung has to "look" into this problem. They know about it. When you are checking your emails, they are being removed from your email server. The next time you sync your phone with your email account server, previous emails do not exist there anymore, that is why your "phone" deletes them. You can do 2 things; either "setup" your email server to NOT to remove emails from server, or use other email app, till they (Samsung) fixed this problem. I am using "Aqua Mail" for the moment, and I think, even Samsung email app is fixed in the future, I am not going back. Aqua Mail app is just perfect for me. Hope this help you out.....

That may be a US specific problem. My note 2 and my s3 don't do that and never have done.

I don't have this problem either, and I have an US Note II (AT&T). I think the default duration for the emails to stay on the phone is 2 weeks. I never had emails disappearing from the phone other than the ones that are over 2 weeks old and those stayed on the server (gmail).

I wasn't referring to Gmail. No problems there. I was talking about email app.

K, we are on different pages here, I can see. You wanted to say, you are using stock Gmail app for your Gmail-email. ;) And I was talking about stock email (imap/pop3) app. :)

Nope. :p I am using the stock Email app with my gmail. :p I setup the stock email app using the google exchange server to push my gmail to my phone. Maybe that's the difference. I am not using pop3 or imap; I am using push email from google's exchange server.

I don't like the stock Gmail app, because I don't like the Gmail app icon with that funny M in the envelope! Yeah I am crazy like that. ;)

Nearly every non-andriod setup I've seen with imap there is an option to "leave the email on server". It could very well be that samsung has disabled this option on their device; or perhaps they have exposed this options in settings (I currently have a razr but have been reading these threads because I'm thinking of buying a note 2). Anyways from the descriptions in this thread this sounds like the issue. So the question is if this option is available on samsung's version fo the stock email program and if not if it can be set some other method (sql for example)...

OP: Are you using imap or pop3 ?

My tmobile galaxy note 2 has the same problem. Emails stay for about 3-4 days, the simply disappear when using the stock 'Email' (not gmail) app. BTW the emails from my gmail account (which I check using this app) don't seem to be deleted, just my other personal and business Pop3 email addresses. Very frustrating. I've gone to K-9 app and am trying it out now. I don't like the look and feel of it as much as the stock app. Wish someone could figure out what's going on.

I am having the same trouble...

I am using stock e-mail app AND MS Outlook to retrieve my mail... I'm pretty sure that I am aware of the problem and the fix, but I just want someone to verify that I'm taking the right approach.

In order to keep my mailbox from being filled up, I have my Outlook set to "delete on retrieve", or something to that effect. So, when my home PC picks up mail, it deletes it from the server. This creates two problems...

1. If my PC picks up mail aotomatically (which it does every 10 minutes), and then my phone tries to pick up mail a couple minutes later, any mail that was retrieved by my PC will not be available to my phone... simply never existed as far as the phone knows.

2. Say that I pick up mail with my phone, then later on my PC picks up, and then my phone does a Sync and does not see the messages on the server, I assume that it will remove or delete those messages from the phone, correct?

So, would the proper fix be to uncheck Sync Email, or should I modify the Sync Schedule, or both? I would assume that I also need to turn off the automatic retrieve on my PC so that I just do a manual retrieve/delete from server, therefore making sure that everything gets to my phone before allowing any program to remove it.

I suppose that there may be a way to keep or delete message on the server for a max of 30 days or so, therefore keeping the server from maxing out on space and keeping my phone cleaned up a bit too. This is something I'll have to look into on my side, but does it sound like I'm taking the right approach where the phone is concerned?

Thanks!

**Edit: Nope... turning off Sync didn't correct the phone problem. With Sync turned off I can't even pick up mail. I don't see that the Sync schedule would have anything to do with this either as it simpy designates a sync frequency... nothing about keeping, removing, etc.

I think I'll just need to choose "Leave on Server" in MS Outlook so that messages are not deleted. Perhaps I can elect to have them auto delete after 30 days or so, which my phone will also do when it syncs.

Thoughts? Comments? Is there anyone here?

To me, the only solution would be to set your PC to retrieve the emails without deleting from the server. In your instance, I believe that's the exact problem you're running into. If your PC is set to retrieve emails from whichever email provider you use and delete them from that server, there's nowhere for the phone to actually locate the email because it has already been routed to your home Outlook promo and no longer exists in the virtual world.

I believe you are correct on the retrieve issue... if my PC beats my phone to the pickup, no way the phone even knows about it. To compound the problem, what messages I DO manage to get on my phone are often later deleted because it is syncing with my mail server, which shows them to be deleted after my PC has it's way with my inbox.

Thanks for the reply. I plan to edit my settings when I get home tonight and test for a couple of days.

What email provider are you using? This is something that usually occurs with I MAP, but not necessarily Pop3.

Cox Communications

From the quick search I did, it looks like Cox email accounts can be set up as either Pop3 or IMAP, in Outlook (assuming you're using Outlook).

Only way to keep the emails from disappearing on your phone is to adjust the email program you're using to keep the emails on the server, after they've forwarded to your phone.

If you're using Outlook (because that's the only one I'm familiar with how to check), go into your account settings and check if your Cox email was set up as a Pop3 or IMAP. That makes a difference as well.

I think I may have figured out the Samsung Galaxy S III e-mail problem. The salesman at AT&T checked the sync email box (or maybe this is the default). This makes the e-mail on the phone match the e-mail on the POP3 server. The phone leaves emails on the server (never delete). The desktop (Microsoft Outlook) removes email from the server after downloading it. I had my phone check for new e-mail every 15 minutes. The desktop application (MS Outlook) checks for new e-mail every hour and deletes from the server. Depending on the timing, an e-mail that is retrieved by the phone may stay on the phone for an hour and 14 minutes or as short as 1 minute. As soon as the desktop removes the mail from the server, and then when the phone next checks AND SYNCS and the old email is gone from the server it gets deleted from the phone too.

I tried an experiment: sent myself an e-mail. Manually downloaded it to the phone. Left it open on the phone and manually downloaded it to the computer with Outlook. Bingo, it disappeared off my phone as I watched.

I unchecked the SYNC box and things seem to be normal now.

{CORRECTION} SYNC is what the programming gremlins call "retrieve your email" . If you un check the box you cannot check your e-mail manually. I didn't have the patience to wait 15 minutes to see if it would do it on its own. Now I have to figure out how to download email without syncing to the server. Sorry for the bad lead. Maybe someone else can figure it out from here.

He is correct. I was losing emails from only 1 account. I checked on my computer (using Thunderbird) and sure enough the boxes on that account for leaving email on server where unchecked, thus causing the phone to delete them as well.

On a second note, I do not see the option for "period of sync" anywhere on the Galaxy Note 2. Unless this is for microsoft exchange, then I wouldn't know. All my emails are POP3.

Thanx cfkull!
