Help Any issues with home & back buttons?

Some people on XDA have been complaining of "Non responsive" buttons, can anyone here who has the One give any opinions?

My thinking is that the buttons have a very small footprint so need a precise touch to activate them, which seems to ring true if you activate vibration on touch. If you are off slightly they don't work.

Any other thoughts?....do you think it could be a software glitch, or just having to be accurate in your touch?

I think it's just having to be accurate. I've noticed that I only get non-responsive buttons when I am too fast with the tap and hence inaccurate.

Send your comments to HTC. Have them open a ticket.

Posting your comments here will fall on deaf ears. Be proactive and contact HTC. that will help them to make a better MR...

While at a T-MOBILE store yesterday,I tried out a NEXUS 4 & found this to be the case as well.It was responsive,but,the footprint was a bit on the small side.
I have to admit,I wasn't a huge fan of the phone,but,an up-close demonstration had me looking at it in a different light.If the ONE wasn't coming out,I'd probably got it right then & there,even w/o LTE on board.

I've even noticed this in some of the video reviews floating around.However,most of these were pre-production models & can't be seen as a true reflection of what to expect from your phone.

As the others have mentioned,don't hesitate to contact HTC.Given the chance,I'm sure they'll make things right w/you.That's been my experience w/other manufacturers,notably MOTOROLA.

Coming from an iPhone with a physical button, my issue of missing the buttons is one of ineptitude rather than non-responsive buttons. Once I turned Haptic feedback on for those two, I became a lot more precise.

So for me it's about being a spanner rather than the buttons not being responsive.

I want to know if its possible to remap a menu key to one of the buttons (double or long tap on one of the buttons). I just can't seem to get pass the on screen menu toggle...seems so unnessecary

They should light up when it's dark....try covering the two sensors to the left of the top speaker.

Just checked and yes they do, would like them to switch on a bit lighter though, not easy to see in low to standard light.

I used the Fosman Screen Shield and the bottons seem to function same as without it. I am use to the iPhone home button so it's a little strange to me anyway

I read in the online guide for HTC One (the guide already on the phone) that you can re-programme the "back" button to act like the old menu button by essentially keeping your finger on it to pull up the menus, but on my phone it appears the Settings/Buttons & Gestures option to do this has been doctored to remove this function.

Anyone have it..?


As I came from a 4 buttoned Sensation with the HOME and back key in completely back to front positions, I still find I don't always touch the correct button when I can find it.

I too think that they don't light up on enough occasions either. but hey it increases battery life this way I supoose

I have been using it for a couple days now and I can tell you I thought it was me not properly touching the screen or not hitting the right spot. Or I think I'm doing

So I kept going and it mostly works. I then figured let me disable the hep. feed back see if that helps.

But even with all that it definitely completely stops working and seriously won't work, that is at least it seems to me until the opposite button is pressed, it won't respond it is very frustrating. I sometimes have to do like a little tap dance between the two buttons to get something to happen.

Even with that it is to me the most disappointing part so far with. Which will hopefully probably can be fixed in an update. The phone is still great and it happens a couple times a day but I still like the phone. I have some video and ilk try to put it up.

"for those of you who are experiencing irresponsive back/home buttons you could try this below:

go to settings -> language&keyboard ->HTC sense input -> advanced -> calibration tool

When you're calibrating the keyboard, press the keys very lightly, after you're done you should have a better back/home key response."

So I first saw this in a demo unit in At&T store and thought it was a deal breaker for me as I could never hit the buttons correctly in one attempt. But I checked another demo unit in another store and there it wasn't an issue.

I am hoping my HTC One will be more responsive than the first unit I saw.

I am in constant communication with HTC this morning regarding the back/home soft key issues. They say there is a software update out there to fix this but I have it and I still have small issues with it. Go to your "About Phone" section in settings and see what your phone's software version is. Note: this is different from your Android Version. If your phone is on version 1.26.502.6 you should have an update to 1.26.502.10 waiting for you. I will further update this thread as I hear more from HTC.

Who is your carrier? I have Sprint and my software is 1.29.651.7. Maybe a mod can setup a software sticky we can keep updated for the different carriers.

Ah you are right. I overlooked that little tidbit. I am on AT&T. So the number would be different per carrier.

HTC gave me their final test to run before I go back for an exchange of the phone. The Android Diagnostic Test. Dial *#*#3424#*#* and agree to terms. Then select the "Button Test" and run. Now if you do this, you notice that the buttons that it tests are the up/down volume and one soft key. Each time I have done it, I have had no issues BUT I am still having issues with hone and back at times.

I don't really think HTC knows what to do at this point or it isn't much of a concern. I am Leary about exchanging the phone and it happening on the new phone as well. I love the phone and will probably stick it out for a while as this will be tough to prove its happening in store if it is not an "everytime thing."

This does seem to help you the keys is to touch VERY VERY VERY LIGHTLY, that is crucial so far an hour into it so far so good. I will update.

I sometimes get unresponsive buttons, but most of the time they are quite sensitive and work as intended. This would lead me to believe any issue would be software related or a system resource issue at the time of unresponsiveness.

I do however have another question....Is there a way to turn of the backlight on the buttons? If i'm watching a move or video on my phone in the dark the last thing I want to bright glowing buttons. This is really quite annoying. I have tried a back light app which did not work and holding the power button and waiting for the buttons to blink and letting go when they are off, which is pretty much impossible to time. So anyone know of a simplet way to Dim or turn of the back light to the buttons?
