Re: Droid Razr on Verizon

How does the Jelly Bean update install?
I heard it was a big file.

Does it update and install OTA (over the air)?
Or does it need connectivity to WiFi or 4g/3g ?

I am trying to stop installation or remove the OTA file.
My workaround right now is to turn off wifi and 4g connectivity and only use when necessary.

My thinking is that it would fail installation and I would still have ICS.

Will this work?

I posted a longer thread about this and a commentor suggested I make is shorter. Please see this one too. This was the original thread:

I heard it was a big file. ...

It is a big patch file that patches your system and some of the apps distributed with your system.

The update is downloaded to your phone (in the background) and when completely downloaded will periodically ask permission to install. To prevent installation simply don't give it permission.

You will get the prompt periodically and have to respond. The only way I have heard to turn off the prompt is to root the phone and rename the update file to .bak.

I was able to delay the reminders and install of ICS for months, by wiping the Android cache partition. In fact, I never got another reminder until I went looking for the JB update last week. Then was given the oportunity to update to ICS first.

This is how it was done with GB, I think it is the same process with ICS, but not 100% sure.

  1. Power the phone off
  2. Press and hold the volume down, volume up and power button until the recovery screen appears.
  3. Use the volume down button to select "Recovery" and then press the volume up to confirm the selection.
  4. The phone will do a little reboot thing, display the dual core logo thing and then an Android next to a triangle with a yellow exclamation point will appear. At this point press the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time.
  5. If you did everything correctly you are now at the Android System Recovery Screen. To clear the cache press the volume down button until you have selected "wipe cache partition". Press the power button to confirm the selection and it will wipe the cache partition.
  6. Once the cache is cleared press the volume up button to select "Reboot System Now" and press the power button to confirm the selection. If the "Reboot System Now" is already selected then just press the power button to confirm the selection and the phone will reboot.

Thanks. I tried this several weeks ago and it worked. But, then this past week the OTA reminders kept popping up. Don't know why. So, I retried the steps above several times last week but it won't stop them. I'll try one more time but for now I keep the thing on sleep and only open when I need it. Any other ideas other than rooting, please let me know.
