Nearly Everything hardware on the phone I love, feels right, great screen, good sound, nice size and weight, just the power button being flush I don't like but can live with.

Software - oh dear god, Sense5 is like android aids especially blinkfeed. 4.2.2??? Silly dock thing. Just gumph the phone doesn't need, just GIVE US BASE ANDROID.

In a perfect would I'd have my Nexus 4 in the 'One' hardware, suppose i'll have to wait for a hacked ROM and it can sit in it's box for now.

Hello :)

I actually found this place whilst looking for help... which is probably not an ideal way to start a user review for my new One, but more of that in a second.

I've come from a Galaxy Nexus and it's taken me a few hours to get used to the HTC Sense stuff again (had a Desire many moons ago). Overall it's a nice layout, although I do wish you could remove Blinkfeed if you didn't want to use it. Never mind.

In terms of build, screen and sound quality it's light years ahead of the Nexus and by far the most impressive phone I've ever owned. Nice weight to it, good shape... the audio almost blew my ears off when I decided to experiment with how loud it'd be through headphones at max volume... yeah, overall it's a lovely bit of kit.

Camera is pretty tidy too. I'd say it's not quite up to the standard of the Xperia Z (which my other half has), but it's certainly not far from it.

But (and you all knew that was coming)... thing is, I'm having the dreaded HTC GPS problems that - a bit of checking has revealed - seems to have plagued them for a few years. Initially I wasn't too concerned that the device couldn't find my location for the clock and weather application, but as time went on and Google Maps started struggling to lock onto anything I started feeling a bit iffy. Going online and finding the amount of issues previous HTC handsets seem to have had with this has only deepened my fear the the One still has a serious issue that HTC haven't been able to eradicate from their last gen of handsets.

To do a simple test, I strolled outside and sat my old Nexus alongside the One and fired up Google Maps. The Nexus homed in on my location in three seconds. After 8 minutes of searching, Maps on the One failed to find my location at all.

At the moment all I can really do is sit it out for a day or two and see if it magically rights itself. Such a shame, as everything else the phone does it does with a flourish.

Ok, the dreaded GPS problem suffered for years is a known Samsung issue, not HTC.

I had an HTC act that way - it was defective, I got it replaced the day after I bought it.

The only way for GPS location acquisition to take that long is if you can't get assistance data to seed the ephemeris tables, or if it's broken. Fortunately, it's easy to find out which -

Check out "GPS Status & Toolbox"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2

Menu, tools, manage a-GPS state:

First reset, then download assistance data.

Menu, tools, calibrate your compass, then pitch and roll.

See if that helps.

Welcome to the forums!

Cheers! :)

Cheers for the help :) - had a quick whizz with GPS Toolbox and unfortunately it doesn't seem to have solved the issue; it took a good minute or so to find a satellite, and after the calibration steps I tried out Google Maps again and had the same issue with it not being able to find my location. Darn.

I should have added into my initial post that my father had a similar issue with his Desire HD. Then again, so did a friend of mine with his S3 so it seems to be across the board!

I'll wait a few days and see if whatever's causing it clears up - if not I'll get it replaced.

Should probably also emphasise that GPS issues aside, this really is a lovely phone :).

Can't say i have any problems with GPS with the One, mine locates in a few seconds from inside my house. Never had a problem with my One X either.

I had a sense that this community was going to shape into one to be a pleasure to be a part of from my first few days here,a lot of useful dialogue among the users w/a true sense of community & camaraderie.:D

Looking forward to the day the ONE becomes available in my neck of the woods....

Can someone across the pond, with an HTC One in hand, test something out for me please?
I'm wondering if Sense 5 supports USB Host Mode/USB On The Go (OTG) out of the box. This can be tested by plugging a USB device into the Micro USB "power" port of the HTC One and seeing if said device is recognized by the system. The prior generation of HTC devices do not support it, but it has been added through rooting and kernel flashing.
If the One will recognize a USB MicroSD card converter right out of the box, and interprets it as a flash drive correctly, I may be able to grudgingly accept a lower capacity storage HTC One.

My apologies for quoting myself :( ^ This post was in the middle of the night (U.S.) and fell on the end of a page. I think it was relatively overlooked possibly?

Can anyone provide any further insight here please?

Sorry I don't have the One in my hand but it supports OTG built in so this should be a non issue. Over on a few other forums people have noted that they have plugged in keyboards and memory card readers and they worked just fine.

Thanks! I always appreciate your help.
I think I read someone that said it was supported but didn't actually have the device or try it out. I'd love to hear/see the first hand experience from somebody if possible.
If a MicroSD -> USB adapter (+OTG cable)
MicroSD-USB-Adapter.jpg

is recognized, supported, and well integrated I may be back to possibly considering HTC One.

Cheers! Will check out those links.

Poor One is little unloved at the moment, especially when I read the Nexus4 will be getting Key Lime Pie about the same time One gets 4.2.2 :(

For some context I've got the One as a work phone, Nexus4 as a personal phone, so I'm finding it hard to adapt then adapt back in the same 15 min period. keyboard being my number 1 moan.

Should have researched better!

Howdy

I've skim-read the thread but apologies if this is a covering old ground. I've had my black One a week now (thanks Phones4u for undercutting Vodafone direct - you'd better not turn out to be as useless as the internets is suggesting though!) and I do like it. I used to use my Sensation, which I love; this is more of a comparison of what I'm used to and why they removed the some useful features! My Sensation has the most recent firmware that they/Vodafone released/updated naturally; that’s to say not one I forced on the phone. I forget which version this is I’m afraid.

Build quality/form
Generally superb, as I'm sure you're aware – an absolute pleasure to hold. A little bit big though – whilst holding the phone normally my thumb can’t reach the top of the screen so I have to reposition my hand to hit e.g. the top menu buttons (which is where menu usually is; if not it’s usually across the bottom* – see below) which is frustrating. I guess my hands are normal sized. I also have to reposition to hit the power button which is on the top-left (I’m a righty and I hold it in my left hand – I assume most do this?) And the volume rocker – both of which are very depressed/flush against the bodywork which does prevent accidental hitting, but makes them hard to press. I think I prefer my Sensation’s more accessible buttons.

The sound is amazing through speakers and headphones (even the bundled buds do a great job). Just amazing. Loud and bassy.
The screen is superb – I can’t give a more in-depth review I’m afraid
The camera is average – same as the Sensation really. Zoe is pointless IMO I’m afraid – it adds very little useful functionality and is buggy as hell
The battery seems pretty good considering it’s so powerful; I guess I get about 11 hours of moderate use. There is a power saver button that I have yet to press J
Blink feed is fine but it mostly just gives you headlines – you click on an item and it has to open the origin: facebook, the cnet website etc

Nuances!
*When an app’s menu bar is on the bottom it’s a solid black bar across the screen, just atop the back/home buttons. As the phone bezel is black it’s hard to see where the capacitive buttons are and the app menu bar is – I often hit the wrong one.

When I go to dial my sister ‘Lu’ it comes up with ‘Luke’ first, and I can’t actually find a way to dial ‘Lu’; I have to go through the contacts, which is annoying. I think this is because it’s a two-letter word – longer names work fine. Can’t imagine why Luke would be before Lu, but anyway.

You can’t set an custom mp3 as an alarm – just the default sounds (which are grim) - fixed

The default calendar widget doesn’t display what’s happening each say – just that something is happening. Useless. I installed Jorte calendar which does the job. Comparatively my wife’s Galaxy 3 mini has a good native calendar widget that displays events.

On the Sensation the notification bar swipe down had two tabs – one of which you could quick-access settings functions – toggle wifi etc; on the One you only have a full settings button so you can’t quickly toggle settings.

You can’t reorder the home screens – you have to wipe them and start again, which is well annoying! Especially as (whist editing the content) it appears that you can move them – you pick them up to do so – but they drop back into their original place regardless.

You don’t appear to be able to have different shortcuts (the 4 at the bottom) on the lock screen as you do on the…unlocked screen. You could on the Sensation. And you can only edit these 4 shortcuts whilst viewing the app tray, FYI – whereas from the Sensation you could edit them from anywhere.

I’m not really looking for solutions to these here – I’ll raise a bug with HTC if needs be; just thought I’d make you aware of what I’ve found.

Anyway…I’m pretty happy, but the honeymoon phase has worn off and these nuances are frustrating.

I’ll edit this over time.

Cheers :)

If by that you mean you can't drag and drop icons on your home screen, you can definitely do that as i've done it with mine. If I have not understood you correctly though, my apologies.

I see you're in my home town, Geoff and with a picture of Joe Strummer as your avatar, nice one. Did you go to the "Meeting Joe Strummer" two person show that was on in Brighton a couple of months back for two nights?

I meant you can't reorder the home screens themselves.

A fellow Brightonian - howdy! Sorry to disappoint but I'm not especially fanatical about The Clash or Mr Strummer per se; I use this avatar as some say that I look like him! Though nowadays I have a moustache (movember hangover). And no, despite this, and living in Kemptown I'm not gay :)

Maybe see you around - I'm off to the whisky festival at the Hilton now.

Sorry for the off-topic :)

Ah gotcha. Yes although you can move the icons about, you can't move the screens themselves, as you rightly say. To be honest, I was so fed up with Blinkfeed adding in 'Tips and Tricks' even though I have emptied it of all feeds and the fact that the screens have icons that are so wildly spaced, that I put Nova Prime back on it and have been using that perfectly for the last few days without any glitches at all.

I'm not a diehard fan of the Clash either; i'm more of an industrial/metal head. I live totally the other side of B&H to you, i'm over towards Shoreham as it happens. I moved to Brighton to go to University in the late 80s and just stayed here.

If I didn't have to go out tonight and drive, I would be at the whisky festival like a shot. Let me know if you find any good Islay single malts there. ;)

That is my idea of heaven right there, we've got a little whiskey shop in the metrocentre that every now and then gets the testers out :D

World of whiskies in Gatwick is superb if you travel - highly recommended. Many free drams.

And...the phone is fine to use (2 handed) whilst inebriated, you'll be pleased to hear, to keep it on topic...
