Backing up HTC Hero

Is there a way that I can make a complete backup image of the phone in it's original state before I inevitably screw something up on it?

There are some backup applications that let you back up things like contacts, SMS messages, settings, etc, but to do a full backup of the phone you would need to root it. Doing a factory reset will restore the phone back to its original condition, but you would then loose all the settings, messages, call history and so on.

I have just purchased Sprite Backup, which appears to back up the essentials, but I don't really want to test it by wiping everything and seeing what get restored :)

I plan on buying an HTC Hero when they release it next month for Sprint.

IMO the best non-Rooted backup is with an app call MyBackup Pro ....
It does a backup of all apps, data, and settings .....

As long as you register a phone under the gmail account that the phone was register under when you bought the app ..it will be available for Downloading again ...

Would that mean that if you buy a new phone, you lose all your paid apps? Or are the apps available to whichever phone is linked to one's Gmail account? (And is this an example of why some of these "essential" proprietary pieces of Google software need to be replaced with opensource alternatives?)

Does this program back up custom ring tones that are on the sd card and there associations with contacts/sms/email etc?

So let say I have x number of sounds on my sd card with each one associated with a contact/sms/whatever with the combination of the mybackup pro program and copying all contents of my sd card if i had to restore would all my ring tone settings/app settings be in tact?

Does it also backup the Hero's internal phone numbers?

When the update finally comes out for the HTC Hero, I imagine it's going to wipe everything out. I don't mind it wiping out all my installed apps, because I can always download and install them again.

I am much more concerned with backing up my phonebook.

Ideally, I would like to backup everything, that way I can upgrade (when the upgrade eventually comes out) and reinsert all the stuff I previously had.
