Incredible will be incredibly HUUUGE for the app market

Since the Inc has internal fast memory, HTC could afford to allocate some of this for app space. If the screen shots are correct, Inc will ship with almost 1gb free for app installs. That is four times what Droid has and six times what Nexus has (out of the box). EVO will have about 200 megs less space (1gb rom, minus OS & preintalled apps).

Though Droid opened the door for mainstream recognition, Inc will bust the doors wide open for the app market. People will buy more apps and this will create new interest by commerical devs that never bothered, due to the lack of app space. Almost all commerical devs have stayed away from Android specifically for this reason. Though EVO will have less app space, it is still large enough to spur increased apps sales as well.

The only other option to get more app space is to root and get apps2sd, but that process is problematic and only a small fraction of the install base actually root in the first place.

Looks like Android will finally have two devices to drive real growth in the market, in regards to commercial development. May also give Android an excuse to never do apps2sd (Android team really do HATE the concept).

My one hope is a keyboard version of this is released later this year, or the Shadow (Droid 2) follows the same design path for memory :)

Ok, so when EA, Pop Cap just to name a few, state they are not investing in the platform due to lack of application storage and analysts also call this out as a key constraint- it is not a reality. Got it.

I also did not know that all Android users are experts and their knowledge of how apps install helped either. Unless you are referring to the devs when they make their apps. Still having several megs or more of core files on app install memory adds up. Not to mention some devs prefer not applying any to the SD card (for various reasons). Not to mention OS updates increase in size as new features are added (takes up space as well). Flash 10.1 will also take a chunk of rom space, later this year.

Please Google away and you will find the top two threats to Android sustained growth are/were:

1. Lack of app space on devices
2. Fragmentation of the OS

So reality is in the mind of the beholder- cool!

I work on an app that is on the android marketplace that at minimum takes 2gb of install. We support every device. The notion that there is not enough app space is foolish. Our app is probably bigger than 99.9% of the all the apps on the the android and apple app stores combined, and it only take 8-9MB on devices. The rest goes to SD cards.

Fragmentation is not currently an issue. It could be, but if google follows through with Froyo and Gingerbread as has been claimed it won't be an issue.

Google is actively working on a solution so we can install apps to SD without having potential "security issues."

The Incredible will help bring in new apps for the market, but not because of it's internal storage. Because it is another high end 2.1 device that will be able to run immersive apps. So far, there are only a handful of these devices (Droid, N1, X10, Liquid, etc.), but as more and more of them are available, and more users are using them, the developers will flock to Android.

Lack of app space is a non-issue. 3D games only require ~1MB for their binaries to be stored on the actual device. The rest of the app (the textures, sounds, and all other space eaters) are stored on the SD card. This is how Raging Thunder 2, ExZeus, etc all work.

Don't trust everything you read on the web. Just because a tech site wrote that app space is an 'issue' with Android doesn't mean it's right.

Spot on. The droid made a huge impact on the app market and there are so many A+ android phones coming out from HTC, Motorola, Sony, and Dell.
