Hero drowned, then resuscitated

I was fly fishing with a friend and the canoe we were in flipped over. Both of us have Hero's and we both had to swim back to shore with them in our pockets, took about 30 seconds. I noticed the phone was in the boot loader screen when I took it out of my pocket and I took the battery out asap. I shook out all the water I could and I can't believe how much water came out of the thing.

About a half hour later after fetching the sunken canoe I put both the phones in tupper ware containers full of rice. A short while later after googleing water damaged phone remedies I disassembled the phones into all there separate components and all of them still had water droplets on them. I then dunked the components into denatured alcohol and then buried them in rice over night.

This morning I tried turning them on and voila, they fired right up. My friends phone was being laggier then usual and the touch screen didnt work at first but after a reboot it worked fine. The only thing that isn't in 100% on both the phone is the lcd screen, I believe there's water still in them and colors are rendered unevenly with some areas darker than others.

Anybody have any advice for this problem?? Will the water eventually come out of the screen? Also, is there a way to buy new water damage stickers so in case the phone malfunctions in the future they can't blame it on water damage??

I took off my lcd screen again tonight and dipped it in alcohol again. It's sitting in a zip lock bag of rice for the night. I post the results tomorrow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are doing what is necessary.

The only piece of advice I would give is to NOT get into a hurry.

It may take anywhere from 2-5 days for all of the condensation to get out.

I took the screen out of the rice this morning and wiped it down with an alcohol prepped lens cleaner. The lcd still has the same blotchyness with uneven brightness, except it's in a different pattern now. I'm still so happy that the phone works still. I definitely consider myself very very lucky.

I have a question about this....

When I was coming into this phone, at Best Buy, I asked the guy there if BB's Warranty would cover loss of phone, and water damage. He said yes, then under his breath, told me that the Sprint coverage also did. He then told me that the Sprint coverage was almost (I just thought it was) mandatory to have with a phone like this.

I have since, asked a sprint store employee if I have their warranty, and if that also covered loss, and water damage. It does.

The question I have for you guys (and girls) is, when you drop your phone in water, or as you did, fall over in a canoe (glad you are both safe, btw.) Why didn't you just call sprint, and pay the 50 to get a new one? Other than the paying 50 for a new one, what benifit do you see from saving the water damaged one?

Just curious, as I do a LOT of outdoor activities, and can't always leave my phone somewhere else, for emergency reasons...

I know the question wasn't addressed to me, but I believe the deductible is now $100 for smart phones. That hurts.

I am not positive on this.. but I don't think that the WARRANTY covers this.

However, the INSURANCE (that you have to pay extra) does.

I don't have insurance on the phone, only the warranty. From what I understand the warranty doesn't cover water damage.
