Battery Question

Greetings all! I just recently purchased a Coby MID7065 tablet (I didn't see a forum section for the 7065 so I'm just posting here) which is my first Android device. I have a question about my results with the battery so far, to see if these results are typical or if I should be looking for an exchange.

When I first got the tablet, I let it charge overnight before I turned it on the first time. The very first day I used it I got about 3.5 hours of screen time. This included about 10 minutes of games, 12 minutes of video watching, visiting one website with Chrome just for a minute, and the rest of the time was spent familiarizing myself with the general functionality of the tablet.

After about 3.5 hours of screen time the battery was down to about 14%.

Last night I turned it off and plugged it in again. This morning when I first turned it on it was at 100%. I opened Google Play, then I went into the tablet settings and disabled a couple of the built-in apps, turned off all backup and syncing, then put it in airplane mode. Then the battery was down to 97%. Is it normal for the battery to drop 3% just doing those things, which only took a couple minutes?

Then I put it into sleep mode and went to the store. A couple hours later I took it out of sleep mode, turned airplane mode off, downloaded one app, and watched three minutes of a YouTube video. Then the battery was down to 92%. Is this normal? Thanks!

It sounds normal to me.

I never really trust battery life for the first couple of charge/discharge cycles and with all my devices, battery has got better after the first 1-2 weeks.

The reading displayed on screen is generally always a best guess, so whilst it said 100%, it might have been slightly less.

I wouldn't worry about it too much now. :)

My batteries behave similarly when I've had the them for many months and they're near the end of their life.

When you first buy a battery you're supposed to leave the battery off of the charger and let it die naturally and then charge it up again and repeat the process a few times to condition the battery.

When you've finished using the phone and the phone goes into lock screen mode and screen switches off it shouldn't use battery as quickly as that. Do you have Wifi switched on?

Although if you are constantly watching video either with the youtube application or using Adobe Flash in the browser then it can drain your battery very fast as Adobe Flash is known to use alot of battery as well as browsing websites over HSDPA or LTE. If you're using a browser + video + Adobe Flash and have your phone screen on the maximum brightness for many hours then you'll need to change batteries or recharge it.

Try putting the screen brightness to the "Auto" setting.

I was going to seem the same thing. As mentioned, use the tablet as normal for a week or two and see if the battery keeps a charge longer. There are so many variables that needs to be considered as to what might be draining a battery faster then normal.

most android devices after a few weeks of charging it the battery should be working better. i have an fusion accend 2 and the battery life sucked down really fast i have had it over a few weeks now and its working better than ever i can go a full 7 hours thats with playing games and my wifi is on and data is turned on the only thing i did is turn the brightness to auto to save battery life. Just remember to exit running apps and clear your RAM everytime you put it down this will also save battery.

My initial usage matched my description exactly. As in, what I described is exactly how I used the tablet, including how I described putting it in airplane mode etc. As I described, I wasn't constantly watching video, only for the few minutes I described above. I did this through the preinstalled YouTube app.

I'm currently allowing the battery to run all the way down, but I'm curious, why is that a good thing to do?

Also for those of you that have had your 7 inch tablets for a while, if you turn off the wifi or put it in airplane mode and then let it sleep overnight, how much does your battery usually go down during the night?

Letting lithium ion batteries run down to 0 isn't generally recommended. If you do it constantly, it will drastically shorten battery life and if they're flat for any extended period of time, you might have an issue getting it to charge again...

If that's the case, then why are some people here recommending that such a thing be done?

It's actually a common misconception. Lithium batteries have no memory and don't need the full charge/discharge cycle. They will get better over the first few weeks though (regardless of whether they've been discharged fully).

I charged my last tab and phones fully out the box and I don't think I've ever let them get to below 20% and neither have any issues.

This is true. I did, one or two full discharges from 100% charge, on both of my Lithium ION Batteries, when brand new. (I don't make this a habit.) The original battery that came with my cellphone is over 2yrs old and still holds a pretty good charge. (There has been a small decrease in how long it holds the charge though.) I can still make it thru a full day. For the most part, my phone stays charged, but I allow it to discharge to 50% a few times a week. My back up battery I store it around at around 70% charge.

Very good information, thank you.

So on average, how much does the battery go down for most people when they leave their 7 inch tablets in sleep mode overnight?
