Help Samsung SII Skyrocket - Jelly Bean Update

I just can't get Kies to update my Skyrocket to Jelly Bean. I have tried everything and nothing works. It will download the update components and then Kies shutsdown and that's all that happens. If a "factory re-set" is going to solver this, just forget it. I'll just stay with ICS, redoing my phone just isn't worth it.

Well I could suggest that you download and install Carbon from Play Store and then make a backup before making a reset.
Maybe I'm slow, but I did download "Carbon" and performed a backup, but it seems to only backup "apps" and not phone settings, like contacts, messages, etc. Am I doing something wrong, or is that all the program is supposed to do?

I've never used Carbon but I think it just backs up apps. The good thing about Carbon, it also backs up the apps data. Normally you can't do that unless you're rooted. You can sync with google to backup your contacts. To backup messages you can use SMS Backup & Restore.

You could also use Odin to update. You can download the stock Jellybean update for the AT&T SGH-I727 from Sammobile. Then Follow this guide using that stock firmware instead of the one listed in the guide.

I've usually used Odin for my T-Mobile Galaxy S2. Kies can be a pain. Anti-virus can cause problems with Kies sometimes. You might try turning that off.

If you use Odin, back up anything you need first. Odin will return your phone to fresh stock Jellybean so you will only have the stock apps that comes with it.

Count your blessings that it won't update! I did the update on my Skyrocket 2 weeks ago and it crashed my phone. It is stuck in a reboot mode. I lost pics that I took since January including pics of my newborn baby. I did the backup, but evidently it does not back up your pics like itunes does. I am so going back to Apple after my contract is up!! :/
The only thing that is good is that I got my phone replaced for free since it was the software that crashed it! :)

Understand you situation! Sorry you had so much trouble. I'm just one of those people who wants the latest and greatest in software updates. I was hoping as I have some "crashing" issues of my own with ICS update, but I'm going to learn a lesson from you, again sorry for your situation. I came from Apple myself, love/hate for me. I can't stand iTunes, my main angst with Apple. Their phones are well made and run smoothly. Good luck!

hey dude is ur phone rooted if so u have to unroot it to get the new update ..try that and C...

No, my phone isn't rooted. The issue seems to be Kies disconnects my phone as soon as the download starts for the firmware update so when the software is finished downloading it can't find the phone and then stalls. I've tried it more than 6 times, don't understand so I'm just not going to try anymore unless someone has an answer.

Finally, success!! One final try, with the advice of a customer service tech from Samsung, disabling Windows Defender & Windows Firewall. I am using a brand new laptop, which may or may not have made a difference. My phone seems to be in better shape since the update and I really like the changes/upgrades they made to the OS. My phone was getting "real" quirky and was freezing up all the time, it hasn't done it in 5 days. I was seriously considering upgrading in September, but now that is on the back burner indefinitely. Thanks to all who have helped!! :)

I am having the same problems FrameGuy was having: my computer recognizes the device (I installed drivers for the phone) and Kies does its thing - until it's time to transfer firmware to the phone. I watch the USB icon disappear from my taskbar and then get a Windows error saying there's a problem with the USB connection - Windows' solution is to replace the device :) I've tried with USB debugging on and off - the install seems to get further with it turned off but then I get errors in Kies, not in windows.

I was hoping I could do an OTA update but when I look at the software update on my phone, it says that none is available...but it shows I'm on version 4.0.4

I'm so beyond frustrated and don't know what else to do. I don't have Windows Defender turned on like FrameGuy did, so I can't turn it off. I did turn off my anti-virus firewall and its auto-protect but no to avail. Help please! :(

Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I've searched on the forum and haven't found an answer to the issue I am experiencing. I'm having issues upgrading my SGH-i727 from 4.04 to Jelly Bean 4.1.2. I got the text message notification from AT&T letting me know that the update was available. When I connect my phone and open up Kies Air (v. 2.5.3.13052_10), under Firmware information is says "Please update Samsung Kies to the latest version and then upgrade firmware." Then to the right it says Update Kies but when I click on it, it says I have the latest version of Kies installed. I have also completely uninstalled Kies and re-installed it. I am running Windows 7 x64.

Even when I go to Settings under my phone, go to About phone and click the Software update, it says I have the most current version installed.

Any idea on why I am experiencing such a problem and what would be a solution to it? Has AT&T not made Jelly Bean available to all of its users yet?

Thanks.

I know all too well your struggles. I think you can forget the "Kies" update, just make sure you have "Windows Defender, Anti-Virus" programs turned off before you try and update your phone. The reason your phone reports that you have the latest software update is 4.1.2 is not available OTA, over the air. It finally worked for me and the updates are worth it. Good luck!;)
