Root All I want is a full backup. Is that too much too ask?

I love android. Sure, I would love to have itunes syncing as seamless as the iphone, but the efficient multitasking and open source nature make android a winner in my book.

One thing I hate about android is the lack of legitimate backup. For my old iphone, if I got a replacement phone, everything could be restored back to how it was through itunes. If the same thing happens on my droid, I have to add all my apps back to their spots on the homescreen, reconfigure widgets and settings, and even have to redownload all of my apps.

This, combined with the lack of tech support for android, gives me a big headache. I now have an issue where my keyboard no longer makes noise. I call verizon and their solution: factory reset. I would do it, but I just do not want to go through the hassle of reconfiguring.

So, my question is this: What are the risks if all I want is to root simply in order to have a full phone backup to the SD card? I do not want a new rom or anything, just the ability to fully backup EVERYTHING on the phone and obviously be able to easily restore from that backup. How would I do this?

Thank you!

a nandroid backup is just that, a full backup of your ENTIRE phone, wallpaper, icon locations, everything which isn't stored on the SD card. You can do a nandroid backup with any rooted phone.

Hmmm nandroid backup sounds good then. Can I root my stock 2.1, keep the same rom (I do not want custom) and just use the root for nandroid and maybe wifi tether?

I find it also usefull to do a backup to my PC )saved me a few times). If you are comfortable using the Android Debug Bridge:

adb pull /sdcard c:\droidbackup (backs up your entire SD card)

adb pull /data/app . (back up all your applications to your PC)

is there a difference between using this command and say just copying and pasting the contents?

I believe you have to restore to 2.0.1, then root, then install the rooted stock 2.1. It will still be stock 2.1, but with root access, so you can flash SPRecovery and do a Nandroid backup. Just save the backups on your SD card or even on your computer for the future. Then all you would need to on future phones would be to reroot, install the rooted 2.1 and SPRecovery and restore your backup.

I have tried using regular DOS commands (xcopy) and direct windows copy and paste type commands. I have found using ADB commands are more reliable (could be due to having over 13gb of music files on my SD card).

LOL why in the world would you need over 13gb of music files on your SD card...

/looks at size of music files on his phone... hmmmm 13gb...

/hangs head...

What is a nandroid backup? And how do I get it/use it? I tried using titanium backup but it doesnt work. I need to back my data up :(

I assume (I know, assumptions are dangerous) you are rooted and have either SP Recovery or Clockwork recovery installed. Check out this thread and go to "How to make a complete system backup." This will back up everything including apps, all data, and the current state of your system (just like an image backup on a PC).
