Screen goes blank during calls

I have seen this buried within a couple of other threads, and thought it was worth starting a new thread on this issue, since I suspect it is getting more common. The issue is immediately when placing or receiving calls the screen goes blank, and locks up. I can not press the bottom on top right to wake it up. The only thing that wakes it up, is to open it to the keyboard. This started yesterday, I called Verizon and was transferred to Technical Support, Technical support tried to blame it on a Battery widget that I installed several days earlier. I told her my sister has had it on her Droid for months with no problems, she said I probably had a bad version. Even though I was not convinced, I removed the widget from my phone to test the fix, but it still died. Then she told me to hard reset, and again I was not convinced, so I took it in to a Verizon store, after 5 minutes the Technician decided to give a me new phone. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

hey man don't freak it's just the proximity sensor at the top. your phone is normal. the screen blackens during a call to save battery and to prevent your cheek from pressing any unwanted buttons.

Assuming that is my issue, how come the button on the top right does not wake it up? I had to open the phone to make it wake up. Exactly where is the sensor?

When I got my phone in November the proximity sensor worked perfectly. After the 2.0.1 update it would go blank on a call and not wake up (would not wake even with me opening the keyboard... would have to open the keyboard just before hanging up to avoid this). With the 2.1 update my proximity sensor works properly again. In my case it was a software issue with the 2.0.1 update.

Is it still happening with your new one?

It was not at first, but then it started happening again with the new one. But I think I have figured it out. I believe it was my screen protector. When Verizon replaced my phone I asked the technician to give me back my screen protector, even though the screen protector was old and was peeling off of the left corner. I wanted to keep it until I received my new ones that I ordered online. Anyway the next day the new phone started experiencing the same problem. I then took off the screen protector and the screen came back on. It seems to correct the problem, does that make sense?

Makes perfect sense. It's a common problem with folks who have screen protectors (it may even affect the light sensor as well). I used a protector for about 2 hours and decided I couldn't deal with it. But, check out some videos on Youtube (just search Droid scratch test or something), and you'll see that gorilla glass is no joke.

This happened on my first replacement droid.

Whenever you'd call or recieve a call, you could not use the home screen until you slid the keyboard open.

This is a defect in the phone. Severeal people in my area have had the exact same issue, and VZW gives you a replacement once you demonstrate it.

Mine came out of the box like that with no apps. The store told me it would be fixed when 2.1 was released so I waited a few days, got the update, and no change. Was able to get a new phone when I went back in.

I haven't had this problem, but the problem I am having is that it will completely black out during my call. Once I hit the lock button to wake it back up (during the call) I have to slide to unlock my screen and THEN I can access in-call options. Royally sucks imo.

This is what I hate. I use Bluetooth or a head set all of the time. When it's time to hang up I have to fumble around to get to where I can even hang up. I think this is the worst feature on my Droid.
