Help HTC Desire 3g problem

I've had my Desire for a couple of weeks now, but am experiencing some problems. The main problem is that I'm not always able to access mobile Internet even when there is coverage. When this happens I just can't get onto the net at all (no symbol for 3g etc) even if I try to switch off and on the mobile Internet.

The only solution I've found when this happens is to reboot the phone, once rebooted I get 3g access. Which brings me to the second problem, in that trying to switch off the phone it just hangs and I eventually have to take out the battery to be able to restart the phone.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems, or is my phone perhaps faulty?

This morning while doing a bit of surfing, the phone decided to crash the Internet browser, switch wallpaper and reboot itself three times in a row. A little bit later I tried to snap a picture only to be told that the camera didn't have write permissions to the SD card. :(

Trying to do something about the problems, I proceeded to uninstall most of the apps I had installed, and (fingers crossed) this seems to have worked at least to some extent as I could then switch off the phone the normal way and when restarting I again could snap a pic with the camera as well as getting net access.

Is it a feasible assumption that an app caused the problems? If so, I suppose I'll just have to be careful reinstalling them, doing so one at a time and try to work out which one might have caused the problem.

Thanks for the info - the irony was lost on me, and skimming through some forum posts over there makes for really depressing reading. :(

Not sure that's the same problem I've experienced though(?), as I won't get a connection at all (not even GPRS), whereas the problem mentioned seems to be(?) that 3G doesn't actually work on the Desire on T-Mob while you do have a connection.

I'm having this problem with my Desire, but on Orange, so I'm not sure it's a carrier problem.

As for leaving WiFi - I left the house this morning where I use WiFi and 3G worked fine when I got to work. When I used data, it would switch up to HSDPA (3G icon would change to H icon on notification bar).

However, while working around town today I had a "Wireless Network Available" notification (WiFi icon with an exclamation mark in the notification bar). I didn't connect and continued walking out of range. Now, I have the 3G icon, it won't change to HSDPA, and I get no data.

I'm trying different things to see what makes a difference. I'll record here, and on the android bug page.

I has the 3G/data loss for the last 2 days.

Yesterday was after being in a building with no signal. By the time I got home the phone had sorted itself.

Today, had a brief no signal moment (in a car park, less than 5 mins) and no data after. Tried disabling and re-enabling always on data, in the end and a few hours and having moved some 40 miles away with works Nokia also on Tmob having full data & 3G, I reset it and all was well again.

A colleague suggested next time to try enabling roaming and see what happens.

I also have 3G watchdog, and wondered if this could be causing it? I'm well under the 4gb limit!

I thought I'd managed to sort out the problem with not being able to shut down the phone, and the workaround of switching on/off wifi while having switched off mobile Internet worked for when I didn't get net access.

No such luck this morning though - coming in to work I didn't get any net access at all, the workaround didn't work, and I tried shutting down the phone about five minutes ago and it's still showing the 'Power off' blurb. Not impressed... :(

...and having popped out the battery, put it back in and switched the phone back on, I immediately got a HSDPA connection.

I also do have 3G Watchdog installed, I wonder if that could be related? I did notice that with the last update the setting for showing the icon only when 3G is active no longer works, and the problems seem to have started at around the time I installed the last update. If the problems persist I'll uninstall it to see if that helps.

I have also had some problems connecting to internet even tho there appears to be a signal. Its just opens the browser and does nothing else. I also need to reboot to get it going again.

I am finding that turning it off every other day helps.

I'm not sure whether it has problems once new apps have been added as the problem seems to replicate at this point.

I'm on vodafone for reference.

I'm having similar problems, and it's becoming quite frustrating. Sometimes when I'm browsing the internet, pages stop loading properly. Every time I click a link, it will load halfway, and then I see the phone switching between 3G and HSDPA, with no data coming or going. Occasionally the browser dies completely.

Rebooting the phone seems to help, but every time I try to power down, it takes forever and I have to take out the battery, which is becoming a rather unpleasant daily occurrence.

Just now, turning off my exchange push mail and auto-sync seemed to help a bit, but it still wasn't quite right.

I never use wifi, so for me it's nothing to do with that.

I'm having similar problems with 3 Uk. I have the speedtest app installed and that always seems to be able to download data but the browser stops loading pages all the time on 3g. The airplane mode workaround works for a few minutes but then the problem returns. Is there any new news on this?

EDIT: Also android market never fails to download either. Just the browser.
With me it seems not to be a problem moving from wireless but a problem moving from hsdpato 3g. It's very annoying!

Exact same here. On Vodafone. And even though I have a decent signal, if it's not showing Edge, HSDPA, I can't get any data. Pain in the arse if you're moving about.

Yes, when my problems occur it's always when the phone is switching from HSDPA to 3G and back.

I'm on Telfort in the Netherlands, using a SIM card that worked perfectly on my previous phone, so I doubt it's a provider issue.

Hi,

Just wanted to say I am having the same problem with my HTC Desire on 3. The default browser seems to get stuck quite often and does not load web pages. I have a 3g connection and other programs have no problem downloading /accessing the internet i.e. marker, opera mini, email etc..

Is it a bug with the default browser?

Tom

note: turning the mobile data on and off seems to work sometimes...
