Again!!!! Three hours and no install! If I stop it, i'm left with a broken system that will no longer update at all.

That must really be painful.

@#$%! So I installed my clean image and ran windows update with the intention off making a new post update image (since the update seemed to be the root of my problem). Argghh...after 3 hours of preparing it finally started installing. It stalled out on the malicious software removal tool and after 6 hours of no progress, I ended up canceling and rebooting. Which left me with a slow booting machine that can no longer repair or update. I decided to start fresh and used Lenovo's one touch to restore to a fresh image. I'm trying to update the malicious update tool tool first, but it's now hung on preparing for over an hour. ARGHHHHHHH! I officially hate Win 8!!!!!

Could be worse, could be blue screening on boot (which is what mine is up to). Luckily I have Linux too

I'm probably calling Lenovo Monday. The problem is, the thing works, just with quirks. Boot up is slow, switching accounts can fail. Most programs install, but some won't. I can install Start8, but Classic Shell will get to the install progress screen and just sit there. Some junkware will uninstall, but a few will get ~80% through the progress bar and just sit there. Any failed install or uninstall cannot be canceled and even if you go in and kill the processes, the windows installer will not function again till a reboot. Regardless of what happens now, when I'm done getting this thing up and running again? It belongs to my kids. I'm so thoroughly fed up with it, that I'll never use it again!

I'm sorry to hear about those problems. You should call to see what can be done about it.

Seems like Win8 needs more time to become stable.

Like most microsoft products, development/debugging is rushed to the point that early adapters end up being free beta testers.

XP was very good, I by-passed Vista (never used it, other than fix customers systems), Win7 was just as good as XP in my experience but more secure and more visually pleasing, Win8 is outta here never to return. ChromeOS is wicked fast, stable and secure.

I find Win8 is faster than Vista or 7 on my old Celeron E3300 box with 4GB DDR2-800. I've only got Win 8 because I'm a student, and my Uni has Dreamspark premium which means I get MS stuff free. I wouldn't pay actual real money for it.

Win8 with classic shell is fine, but my Lenovo y400 was RMA'd due to hardware issues. It is still disturbing that Win8 started auto repair (many times) which also failed 100% of the time, yet there was never any indication or report of a physical problem. Not even one of their near indecipherable error numbers. Win8 on a non touch machine without a shell replacement is worthless IMHO. I understand the (not) Metro interface for tablets, but MS screwed up by taking away the start button (and if rumors are true, the one coming with 8.1 is not a big improvement) and boot-to-desktop feature. I don't know of a single business that would consider upgrading to Win8 as it stands, thus I also doubt MS's adoption numbers (I've read a bunch of articles accusing them of manipulating the numbers to seem more optimistic). My brothers company is considering a large laptop purchase and will not accept Win8 at all, mainly due to the confusion caused by its interface. He was told by several vendors salesman that Win8 is a non starter on all institutional sales.

Seems Win 8 was trying to be The Wizard of Oz. Just keep looking at the illusion, but you can't look behind the curtain.

When I had the modern UI（formerly Metro) menu and apps running on a large desktop PC monitor, I hated the look of it and the way it worked. Just seemed so clumsy and childish IMO.

From all the problems I've heard, and the Microsoft reputation of windows releases, I'll stay on windows 7 until the one after 8 releases. Imagine the look on the dev's face when they realized that links sent from the metro desktop could only be opened on another metro desktop. (unknown if resolved already or not)

I was trying to limp along with my '05 HP XP until that happened, but it just fell down and died. So now I have a Win8 Gateway. Everything about it is fine, except the 8 part.

And the gateway part. I can't stand the OEM stuff. They're all trying to use proprietary stuff now so if you upgrade, say, the video card and need a higher output power supply, you're screwed because you can't thanks to the proprietary form factor of the power supply. In addition to certain expansion slots covered by that same proprietary form factor power supply.

You know, I'm really getting sick of tech reviewers and people complaining about the little things like the start button being removed and replaced with the start menu, and not being able to boot into the desktop mode. I have been using Windows 8 on a desktop without a touch screen for a few months now, and have never had a problem with the start menu. It's the same thing, in the same place, just looks different.

Is there a legitiment review on Windows 8 that says its bad because its bad, or is it all bad because the button was removed?

The same thing happened to Vista. Much of what everyone loves about Windows 7 was in Vista as part of Longhorn/Aero but Vista was lambasted unfairly because of a great number of interface changes (which are now generally considered improvements over XP). Vista wasn't as bad as everyone claimed, unlike Windows ME, which was a train wreck aboard the Titanic on Friday the 13th.

I'm sure by the time Blue (8.1) surfaces it will be the same review from the tech press ... "Windows is fixed." What needs to be fixed, IMHO is the press.
