Sony Ericsson X10 can do multitouch after all, will get Android 2.1 in September?

Hmmm...... I don't really care about Multitouch.. but thought I would pass it on. same thing happen with the magic people said it would not do multitouch and then it could.

So, was all that hubbub for nothing? British retailer mobiles.co.uk -- a wholly-owned subsidiary of giant Carphone Warehouse, for what it's worth -- is claiming a "man on the inside" as saying that the X10 actually can do multitouch after all, despite word from a Sony Ericsson product manager to the contrary. In fact, not only can it do multitouch, but it will do multitouch through a software update in the second half of the year, the source goes on to say. This all ties in nicely with the dude's claim that the X10 will see an official update to Android 2.1 in September, a window that dovetails rather nicely with Sony Ericsson's official line of 2H 2010. Of course, by the time September rolls around, we can only assume that Froyo will be alive and well, so the ultimate question of relevancy for Sony Ericsson's very first Android venture remains to be answered.

haha...too slow! Too late! I am the proud owner of the N1 now. But from the long wait from announcement of the X10 in November 2009 to it being release now...I won't trust anything SE promises. I now take whatever SE says in its PR with a bag of salt!!! I'll believe it when I see X10 running 2.1...X10 that are not rooted

Why would the SE Product Manager for the X10 say Multi Touch is not possible if it really was? How would this be advantageous to SE? If you do not believe the Product Manager for this phone, what would you believe?

If the hardware could support it, why would Sony not add the software support? The tweet I posted is pretty solidly saying it will not ever get support. There's no reason for Sony to hold back if there was a hardware capability, especially since all the other Android manufacturers are supporting MT. It's not like Sony lacks the money or patents to fight off Apple if that were what they were worried about.

Wish all you want, and claim it's a conspiracy or whatever, the X10 is not getting multi-touch. If you can't handle that, don't buy one.

Frankly, it wasn't a factor in my buying decision and I'm very happy with my X10.

Although, not to get all conspiracy on everyone but a couple of seconds before he starts playing with the navigation apps (including google maps where he uses the pinch zoom) he takes the phone off camera for a bit. I don't know, I suppose he might be playing a video and doing the inputs in time with the video but all that said, it kind of looks real..?

Nope. It's just subtle subtle double-tapping. Note that he never waivers or pauses when he zooms in, always zooms in the same amount, and doesn't pinch-zoom out.

I can double-tap in Google Maps on my X10 with very little effort, making it look like a single touch. As double-tapping zooms in smoothly a set amount, it's very easy to make it look like a pinch-zoom.

Sorry, but it's not proof of anything.
