Root Tethering your droid..

A lot has been discussed about being concerned with high data usage and the lack of concern with tethering with the droid. I have been rooted and I have tethered with pda net and over wifi with the wifi tether apk. I don't mean to post this to scare anyone or wag my finger because I do participate... I just want everyone to be educated. Verizon knows the different between streaming Pandora for 4 hours at a time or tethering or they wouldn't make such a fuss about this. I received this in an email recently at work which was sent company wide, (86,000+), and have been wanting to post it here but keep forgetting.



It seems like from this memo VZW wants you to know that if you tether, you will lose your service. Perhaps this is a great way for some to get out of their contract but I would have to assume that if they went this far as to post something directly towards 3rd part tethering there could be greater consequences, which I do not know what those would be...

I thought all of you may find this interesting and I wanted to make everyone aware that VZW is watching how users are using data and there could be issues if it is abused.

Really, who is the schmuck who's job it is to go through over 2 million phones to see what apps are loaded. If this was a real concern we would be seeing more people post that they are getting caught.

Do you really think that with today technology they have Bob sitting there watching a monitor? Its easy, use a program that will set a limit of data usage, review those that are incredibly high..

Yeah, but not everyone that tethers pulls in a lot of data. I use it occasionally for light web browsing where there is no Wi-Fi and I don't go above 3GB a month ever.\

It was great to have while in vacation and my hotel wanted to charge 15 dollars a day for wifi...

You know that there's hundreds of people or more out there that doesn't give a shit and they're pulling data all day with their Android device...

I received an extra data charge on my bill last month, I didn't raise a stink about it as it was only $3.78. I kinda figured it was from tethering. I had 7.3 GB of usage. So, with the economy continuing to spiral downward, Verizon has more money than any other company to hire people to watch your phones; I think not. So, how about if we do this, lets call upon the expert's, and ask them to tell us just exactly how it is that Verizon knows that we are tethering our Droid with our PC, and not just surfing the web with our Droid, which I have unlimited use. So, whats next, they know if your phone is rooted?


By the way, I left the best part out. I was at my local Verizon Store, and guess who showed me how to Tether my Droid?

Not sure if you are really asking that question or if you are being sarcastic. However, if you really want to know, I'll tell you.

Everything you do on the internet is sent from computer to computer in packets. Packets are small amounts of data that contain information about your computer and the information you are sending/receiving through the internet.

Now the information about your computer in those packets is stuff like your OS, internet browser, screen resolution, and much more. So, if you are using Windows 7 with FireFox 3, Verizon is going to be able to see that in the packets being sent through it's servers.

If you wish to see this in action, download a packet sniffer program and just watch it work. You will be able to see all kinds of information and it is kind of fun to play with those programs.

I don't know, unlimited is unlimited, and they shouldn't say anything about us tethering until they offer it as a package.
But I have been over 5 gigs every month with no problems.. yet.. Knock on wood.

Unlimited plans are monitored. I have unlimited and have a readout of my usage on my monthly bill. There's no extra charge though for going over. But its commonly accepted that if you use an obsceene amount of data you'll pop up on their radar and eventually they'll cap it or craxkdown on tethering.

As we look at level one, we can see that in order for these packets to move along it needs a physical piece of equipment such as CAT 5 cable, Fiber Optics etc...........I didn't think that the OSI model worked with cellular phones.

They "physical layer" can be copper, glass, or microwave. If it pushes data over the internet it can be monitored. Cell phones are basically just VOIP phones, and have been since the analogue signals were turned off a few years ago.

All I can say is if they offered the mobile broadband package for the Droid I would buy it just as I did when I had my Q but until then I will tether and watch my bill close.

I read that you can switch the MIP Profile on a Droid to change Verizon's ability to tell if you are tethering or not (see below). Has anyone been successful in doing something like this after updating to 2.1 and having both rooted and tethered (PdaNet)?


I've tried hitting ##778. However, it ends up dialing instead of letting me see the MIP Profile.
