Case or no case?

So I've had my Galaxy Nexus since day one and dropped it more times than I can count. I have a minor scuff on one side and two tiny hairline scratches on the screen. Not bad given that I have 3 kids always using it and it basically replaced my point and shoot for all family functions.

I've always gone without a case but I'm thinking about one for the S4 because the screen is so big and I know two people who have cracked their S3s. I'm curious, are you all going to use a case? If I did it would probably be one of the Spigens.

The only reason why I use a case is to increase the resale value of my phones. Phones in perfect condition sell for much more than phones with even a minor scratch or blemish.

I just use cheap TPU cases that cost around $8.

I really see no need for OB Defender cases for the average user. Unless you work in construction or expect to throw your phone against brick walls. 1st off, they're expensive. 2nd off, they're way to big and thick.

A Spigen Neo Hybrid case (£18) and a Spigen glass screen protector (£27) for complete protection. The reason I like to keep my phones pristine is because when the next phone I want comes to market I'll sell my current one to fund the new one. Cleaner phones attract more buyers and a higher sale price!

I preferred using case for my s4 and I used to buy cases from otterbox though I when I discovered minisuit I switch to it. In fact I just purchased my MiniSuit Samsung Galaxy S4 Kinnect Rubber Trim Case with Screen Protector a couple of weeks ago from amazon. I go for minsuit due to the fact that this company do offer classy, durable and affordable cases. I still like otterbox though.

I am very careful with my phone so I just don't feel the need.

My phone is delightfully light and slim and the screen feels great. If I put it in a case and stuck a screen protector on it I would then have a fat ugly phone with an horrible orange peel screen that feels slightly sticky. No thank you.

If you are careless or spend a lot of time in a hostile environment, I can see the point. I'm not and I don't so I'm happy to go naked.

The S4 is a lot easier to get display cracks than the S3 with even slight drops and putting in pockets that result in bending cracks. Probably best not to put the S4 in a pocket at all and have a case to help absord kinetic energy. Thin bezels and big surface glass equals crack magnet.

I don't know about that. My wife is not really that hard on her phone but she cracked her Galaxy Nexus with a silicon case and screen protector on it. Drop was from the kitchen counter onto the vinyl floor.

I figure if you really want drop protection you would need one of those dual layer cases like the neo hybrid. Everything else is mostly for minor bangs and scratches to help with resale. I don't plan on reselling my phone so I don't care about that.

Come to think of it how much more can you really get get with a few minor dings to the phone after ~2 years. $30-50? Doesn't see worth it if the case approaches that.

You do realize that those two items cost $60 combined, which is probably more than the difference between a "pristine" phone resale price vs. a slightly blemished one.

The part you are overlooking is you will get even more by including the case and other accessories in the sale. So the average case costing $20-$30, you more than make up for that with a higher selling price that comes with having a mint condition device that looks nearly brand new. And by throwing the case in on top of it you get an even higher sale price. So you more then make up for the $20-$30 on the other end.

I'm overly cautious with my phone, and invariably despite how careful I am I realize there is a strong likelihood at some point or another I will drop it. I dropped my Evo 3D once in a bar and it bounced off the metal step/foot rest around the bottom of the bar. My phone was in a 2 stage case with a screen protector, and it didn't so much as leave a mark on it. And that was with me being very, very careful with my phone and all my electronics. Crap does happen, it's nice to have some form of protection.

This is a good point. I pay for the phone insurance already and feel that if I break my phone then i'll suck it up and pay the deductible and get a new phone. My last three android phones had no screen protector or case and are still kicking strong, even after a few drops, dings, and dents. I like the slim feel of my naked phone and feel that screen protectors hurt my touch screen experience. Or perhaps I like to live dangerously!!!

Didn't say it would be 100 percent protected, just that it will do a lot better than without one. My gs3 in a lightweight case fell off my motorcycle at about 40 mph and slid for a bit and was pretty much fine. Would it be fine if I did it all the time? Probably not but I do think it helped a lot. Luck of the draw I suppose.

I generally dont like cases, but I buy 1 good case for every phone i have. I do work outside quite a lot, so having the case is nice. I got the spigen slim armor, doesnt add much bulk at all and looks nice. I will never use a screen protector though, I personally hate them. I've owned all 4 galaxy S phones, and every one had a pristine screen when it was replaced, excepted for the first one, which had one small scratch

It is perfectly possible to keep a phone fairly much pristine without using a case or screen protector.

My last two phones were an iPhone 3GS and a Galaxy S2. When I sold them both after two years of constant use, neither of them had a mark on them. If you held them up to bright sunlight and looked really hard there were tiny marks on them but they were, by almost any standard, both in excellent condition.

The secret to keeping your phone in good nick is to be careful with it, not sticking it in an ugly case.

I have a friend with the Galaxy S3 and when I said that I was getting an Otterbox Defender for my S4, he indicated that he had never had a problem with his S3 that had no protection whatsoever and proceeded to get the S3 out of his pocket to show me as to its pristine condition ......... he dropped it and it does not even switch on now!!!
You never can be certain that you will not drop it. I had the S3 and laughed at people who had let it get into the washing machine and said that I could not understand as to how that could happen, --- my S3 went into the washer!!!!!!

Better to be safe than sorry.

I wonder how many people who use a case are the same saying the S3/4 shouldn't use cheap plastic

Anyway - case for me now. Always went naked until I had a warranty issue with Samsung refusing warranty because there was a hairline crack in the case (which I didn't even notice).

Edit: Ok, I just noticed I am in the S4 forum lol - but the same applies IF I'd change the S3 for an S4

If some mystical force could GUARANTEE that i would never drop my phone or it would not suffer any damage of any kind then of course i would opt for no case, as im sure everyone would.
