Hi - I'm new to any touch screen phone technology and got my HTC Hero yesterday. I've played around with it and followed the instructions in the leaflet it came with... I have managed to use it to open up webpages including my usual email provider/facebook and have bookmarked them. I have inserted my numbers into the address book (and managed to synch with facebook for photos/birthdays), send SMS, make phonecalls... but that is it!

In simple terms: how can I find apps and download them, does it always work through WIFI, how can I take things off the homepage (I have managed to install the (empty) playlist to the homepage but cannot remove it....

sorry lots of simple questions but would be grateful for some help!

To find and download apps you need to go to the Market (or Android Market). You can use WIFI to access this and other websites etc, or WAP, but if you're doing it via WAP it's best to have a data bundle, so you're not charged extra for surfing and/or downloading.

To delete items from the homepage, touch the icon and keep pressing the screen for a few seconds, the unit should vibrate and the icon will become moveable and a Trash option appear at the bottom of the screen. Just drag unwanted stuff into theire.

P.S. Enjoy your Hero, it's a great bit of kit :D

Fabulous, thanks. I have got unlimited Data so will use WAP to search for apps.

Is there a quick way to access Facebook (place an icon on the homepage?).

Also, managed to set the POP settings to access my email, but when it comes up on the homepage (rather than through WAP) it always displays 'no mail in inbox'. Do you think my settings might be wrong, or would I have to contact my email server?

One other thing for now... does the camera have a flash facility?

On my handset, if you flick across two screens to the right, it has the Bookmarks widget, which contains Facebook (or it can be added). So whist it's not on the Homepage, it's only two screens across.

I know a few people, including me have had problems getting email setting just right, so might help to add some more details, such as which company the email account is which, your mobile provider, which country you're in etc. You don't need to go into any personal details/passwords etc, just enough to give people an idea of what the problem might be.

With regards the camera, there isn't a flash facility and to be honest the camera isn't the greatest either, despite being a 5mb one!?!

Thanks - have now aded that FB widget... I had a feeling the camera facility might not be that great but hoping I will be able to move some pictures over from iPhoto on the Mac so at least can have them in an album.

The email is with doctors.net.uk and I aim in the UK, the mobile provider is Orange... help with setting up the email would be gratefully received -thanks.

Another thing... could someone explain the difference to me when it comes to connecting through a mobile network/WAP/Wi-fi. I have an unlimited data bundle - does this make a difference?

WAP just stands for Wireless Aplication Protocol so it is just a way of connecting over the Mobile network. If you connnect over the mobile network thedata comes off your bundle and the speed is governed by the quality of your 3G connection which will be displayed at the top of the screen as E G 3G H with a couple of arrows (Edge, GPRS,3G, HSPDA) Anything other than 3G or HSPDA and connection speed will be awful. Wifi will be using your wired internet connection via your wireless router so assuming any half decent internet connection it will generally be significantly faster unless you are getting a very good HSPDA connection on mobile

Others will probably disagree but I would suggest setting up a Google mail account and setting it to sync with your POP3 account (very easy). Not only does this allow you access to your pop3 Doctors account on any PC with internet via Gmail but it means you can use the Gmail app on the Hero instead of the HTC mail app. Since Android is a Google operating system it integrates very well in my experience. You can even still send mail as if it came from your pop3 email address and it is a great way to transfer contacts to your phone and back them up becasue they are sync'd automatically to Google so cannot be lost even if the phone is.
