Jelly Bean OTA Update For LG Venice

Hi guys, I'm new here and I need some help. My Venice is about a month old, rooted and stock ROM. Yesterday I downloaded the USB drivers and the LG Mobile Support Tool to upgrade my phone's firmware from ZV5 to ZV6.

The support tool wouldn't detect my phone even after trying different USB ports and turning on debugging so I restarted my PC and phone. It still didn't detect the phone so I attempted to start it in download mode. From a thread, I held the volume up and down and power buttons. The phone booted normally, not in download mode, so I turned it off, disconnected the cable, pulled the battery, replaced the battery (but NOT the cable - I'm such an idiot) and then tried putting it in download mode again. this time it turned on, flashed the LG logo for about 2-3 seconds, screen goes black, and then displays the LG logo again, repeating infinitely...

I can get it into download mode using volume up and down while plugging in the cable, and the support tool does detect the phone and shows an update is available. but when I try getting the update or using the recovery option, it gets to 40% "Checking the cell phone #" and displays the following error:

Software update is not supported for this model
Did I just kill my phone?

I just ended up buying a new phone and returning the old one... which worked out well because I bought the second one from Amazon and saved $45.

It seems like the LG mobile support program is not compatible with the Venice, and actually bricks it without even performing any actions on it... just trying to update the phone results in a brick, even if it doesn't finish scanning/analyzing the phone. Something hinky is going on here... I wish there was a way to warn folks about using the updater with this model. :/

Well, yeah, it says the Venice is compatible, but can anyone actually verify that they successfully updated their LG730 without bricking it?

I definitely won't be using it again. Sure, it could have been a freak thing or a coincidence, but I don't want to take the chance again.

Just tried again because the software is not even recognizing the phone plugged in, I decided to try online chat and they did not mention that it was not compatible but also wasnt able to really help either, some strange things came across the top and when I touched the screen it was like I was using the quick memo pen but it was definitely something wrong, I thanked them and factory reset my phone after two reboots didnt help...I am going to leave the update alone too...something is not right

It was messing up until I did a factory reset and then I unrooted...something is definitely amiss with that tool...I am not going to mess with it again, guess I'll be stuck with the current software. I talked to Boost yesterday about another issue and asked them about it and they referred me to LG...after the mishap, LG referred me to Boost so that was zero help...but the rep at LG did try to get it working, maybe they didnt know that like what someone else said this phone is incompatible:(

I have been jealous of folks with newer phones that have Android Jelly Bean 4.1 or 4.2, so I was happy to read yesterday that Boost Mobile had begun an "Over The Air" update of the LG Venice to Jelly Bean 4.1.1, PLUS upgrading the Venice to Version 8 of the Venice firmware.

I did not want to wait for Boost to send me the update, so I Googled around to find out how to "force" an OTA update.

THIS is the process I followed to update my Venice:

1. Charged my Venice to 100%

2. Verified that I had more than 400 MB of open internal memory (moving all of my music to the SD card gave me 1.7 GB of open memory).

3. Connected to a fast wi-fi router.

4. Clicked "Settings".

5. Clicked "Apps"

6. Clicked "All"

7. Clicked "Google Services Framework"

8. Clicked "Force Stop"

9. Clicked "Settings"

10. Clicked "System Updates"

11. Clicked "Update Firmware"

12. Clicked "Update LG Software"

The 362 mb download began and continued for about 15 minutes. Next I was asked if I wanted to install the update. I "clicked" update. During the update process, the Venice was restarted and then a notice said "Updated 23 apps". Then the Venice restarted again. I was asked if I wanted to update "Google Search". I clicked "update". That update installed "Google Now" and after the install I was given a quick overview of how "Google Now" works.

I had 1.7 gb of open memory before the update and 1.5 gb after, with much of the 200 mb of memory being used for app updates and the new "Google Now" app.

The entire process took less than an hour and went smoothly. My Venice was also updated to V.8 of the LG firmware from the original V.5. My phone was never rooted.

How do I like Jelly Bean so far? The changes that I can see are very minor, including the disappearance of my favorite news app and my favorite wallpaper and the addition of one new wallpaper. Trivial stuff.

My Venice has always worked smoothly, so any "Project Butter" improvements may be too subtle for me to notice.

"Google Now" popped up two "cards" when I restarted my phone to give me the current local weather, and give me ratings on the two restaurants closest to me house. Then "Google Now" disappeared and I am not sure how to access it manually...does it just pop up when it wants to?

I'm guessing that people who install Jelly Bean will be happy with it, but the folks who stay with Ice Cream Sandwich are not missing much.

thank you!!!! i really needed this! im glad theres people like you who can help!

Please post and tell everyone how you like Jelly Bean compared with Ice Cream Sandwich.

By the way, a few people have reported problems in getting the "Over The Air" download process to begin. The "trick" for those folks seems to be to turn their phone off, restart their phone, and then repeat steps 3 through 12. If necessary, repeat that process several times. After the download begins, things move smoothly.

Remember that the "Google Now" update is NOT automatic. After the updates are completed and your Venice has restarted, you will see a notification that an update is available for "Google Search". After you download and install that update, "Google Now" will start up when you turn your phone off and then restart your phone.

I am guessing that next week we will read reports of people who "bricked" their Venice during the update process. If that occurs, the most likely cause will be that they began the process with LESS than 400 MB of open internal memory, or with a battery that was not 100% charged.

Losing your wi-fi connection midway through the download might also cause problems, so folks need to verify that they have a "solid" high speed connection before beginning the download.

Frankly, I did not see any significant improvement in how my Venice works after installing Jelly Bean...it was working great BEFORE the update. However, I am pleased that Boost Mobile and LG went to the effort and expense of making this update available...especially considering that some of the people with expensive At&t or Verizon phone contracts have never received the upgrade to Jelly Bean.

Strange, well there is a method to do it, two actually. I have only done one.
Basically the first method (untested)
is to: (Thank Alan Houston for that guide.)
But in this method I recommend you get voodoo ota root keeper. I read that it was worked.

I don't see any significant differences in how my Venice works with Jelly Bean compared with Ice Cream Sandwich...it worked smoothly before the update and works smoothly after the update. Folks who decide to stay with ICS won't be missing much if they are happy with how their phone is currently working."

Method two is a guide by me. It's basically reflashing the device and you will loose everything (besides stuff on the external SD card), including root access. It is confirmed to work by me and three others!

Guide:

"For those having issues with downloading the update through the phone, meaning it isn't working properly.

There's an alternative method for this, it's quite simple.

What you need:
- A Computer on Windows (Only tested OS)
- LG Venice (Obviously :p)
- USB Cable to connect to PC
- Ability to install programs on the PC

This method is pretty safe and used to unbrick some phones (Can also be used for upgrades), but just incase I'm in no way responsible for any damage to your Venice. Only you are, do this at your own risk.
I HAVE done this sucessfully on an LG Venice before, I also unbricked it on ICS, both times sucessful.
I've also used KDZ to unbrick the LG Lucid and downgrade it.

Download these files and extract the .zip file: http://www2.zippyshare.com/v/36411166/file.html
- I did NOT make any of these tools!

1. Install "LG VZW_United_WHQL_v2.7.1".
- These are drivers so the phone can be detected by the PC and flash JellyBean.
- Added Install "msxml" as well!

2. Get your phones IMEI/MEID by going on the dial pad and calling "*#06#" then get the number on your PC.
- More detailed instructions/methods: http://www.wikihow.com/Find-the-IMEI-Number-on-a-Mobile-Phone

3. Open "Orignal LG Firmware" Enter "LG730" in "Model of phone" and your IMEI/MEID in the "Phone serial number" field.
- It says serial, but in the post I got this tool from it was edited and actually needs the IMEI/MEID number.

4. Choose a file save location and save the file. The firmware will be a .cab file.

5. Goto the KDZ folder and open "UpTestEX_mod2_marwin" (If you're on a netbook and the program doesn't fit on screen download altmove)

6. In "UpTestEX_mod2_marwin" Goto "Encrypt cab file to kdz file" and select the .cab file that just downloaded and hit the "encrypt cab -> kdz" button and wait for program to finish.
- File will show up on the top left side of the program under "test"

7. Connect your LG Venice to the PC in download mode.
- Download mode can be accessed by powering off the device. Connect it to the PC and boot it holding power up + down and the power button. It'll say download mode on screen.

8. Open "KDZ_FW_UPD" Set the phone mode to emergency and select the kdz file that UpTestModEX just made.

9. Click launch software update.
- THE PROGRAM WILL FREEZE UP! DO NOT REMOVE THE WIRE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE VENICE AND PC OR CLOSE KDZ! I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF ANYTHING SHOULD GO WRONG!
- The program will tell you when finished.

The following steps are optional, but recommended.

10. Disconnect the Venice from the PC and unmount the SD Card via settings.
- Then physically remove the SD card.

11. Power off the Venice fully.

12. Perform a HARD factory reset.
- This can be done by booting the phone holding the home key, volume down and power button. Follow on screen instructions to perform the hard factory reset.

Enjoy your LG Venice on JellyBean!"

Hope this helped!

Got a notification this morning that an update was available. I accepted the update (phone was not rooted or anything) and it completed successfully.

However, the phone will no longer "slow charge". I'm constantly on the move so I have chargers at home, in the car, and at the office. When I plug it into 1A+ chargers, it charges normally. If I plug it into <1A chargers, it does nothing at all - no notification, no slow charge, etc.

Slow charging worked fine before the Jelly Bean update. Anyone aware of a hidden setting or workaround to get slow charging working again?

I have no experience with a rooted Venice. I have found a factory reset to be an effective cure for most Android problems. Next, verify there is more than 400 mb of open internal memory. Make sure you have a reliable wifi connection so you do not lose it during the download.

The upgrade is minor so if you are happy with your phone, you may want to stay with ICS.

I recently got the Jellybean update pushed to my Lg Venice and it crashed my phone. I went online to research my problem and saw that alot of Droid users were having this problem also. My question is, how long did Google actually work on this update before releasing it? It seems like it did more damage than it did help. Don't get me wrong I love the new updates but I can't deal with the freezing and crashing every 5 mins. I'm trying to stick it out but I see myself either getting a new device or somehow rolling back the update.

I recommend you roll back the update/reflash JellyBean probably fixing any issues!
If you want to Reflash/Downgrade, use my unbrick guide, it'll work to roll back the update. http://androidforums.com/venice-all-things-root/722433-guide-unbrick-lg-venice.html

If you download the firmware the way I tell you to in my guide it'll download the "LG730ZV8.cab" which is JellyBean, if you want ICS back, skip steps 1-4 in my guide and download the V5 (ICS) firmware in this thread: http://androidforums.com/venice-all-things-root/715991-how-downgrade-recover-your-lg-venice.html

Once done in step 6 select the V5 .cab . If you want to just reflash JellyBean to fix any bugs just follow my guide all the way through. If you usually get root, I recommend downgrading to V5, rooting and using OTA Root Keeper (On Google Play) to upgrade the LG Venice OTA to JellyBean and keep root.

If your phone is acting odd after the Jelly Bean update, do a factory reset. Do not install any apps. Verify that you have at least 400 mb of open internal memory. Then install Jelly Bean again.

Your phone should be running smoothly. Install one app each day until you begin having problems. That will identify defective apps, which are the cause of most android problems.
