Siyah kernel - Dummies Guide

I know Ive only been on this kernel (Siyah-s2-v6.0b4) for coming up to 24 hrs, but I have to say I'm very impressed! Usually by now, my phone is bleating for a charge but I still have 25% left, and I've been giving it some hard work today.
Also the modem.
We have two networks at work, and I invariably get problems connecting when moving from one to another, but today I've had no problems at all, and pages have been loading with a bullet!
Lets hope things will only improve.
Everything is on stock settings so far. I'll leave it that way for few days until things settle down before seeing if a tweak here and there will make a difference.
Thanks again for all the help and advice contained on this forum, it really is a treasure trove!
I hope that I will, one day soon, be able to help someone here too, and give a little back.

Every time I'm tempted away from Siyah... I find myself drawn back again.

I had a brief foray with Dorimanx 8.11.1, 8.12 and 8.13 but at the end of the day... Siyah wins for me.

Yes, I know it is only a beta that lacks all the bells and whistles that Dorimanx has thrown at his Siyah based kernel... but it does the business!

Up until now I have been using Siyah 6.0beta4 in conjunction with the Jelly Bean LSJ release. I was on that for 3 months and I still maintain that if you are on the LSJ firmware, then you cannot beat Siyah 6.0beta4.

Having moved on to the latest XWLSN, JB, firmware, I decided to give Siyah 6.0beta5 a run for its money... and I am not disappointed!

Using the following configuration in STweaks...

CPU

SCHED_MC = 2

CPU UNDERVOLTING = None

DEFAULT CPU GOVERNOR = ondemand

CPU MAX FREQUENCY
= 800MHz for battery saving or 1200 for default and 1300 for Performance

CPU MIN FREQUENCY = 200MHz

BLN = enabled/30 mins/Steady/1 sec/BLNWW/led-fadeeout/led-on-touch/Auto Led Voltage

MISC

DEFAULT I/O SCHEDULER = row

(Do enable JB Power Saving in JB Settings to save more juice if you want)

DO NOT, in CPU_UV check, "Set on boot", until you are confident with your settings.

As I mentioned, it lacks all the bells and whistles of the latest Dorimanx releases but with a couple of app's such as AdAway, sadly, no longer available from the Play Store as most, if not all, ad blocking app's have been removed by Google, (so make sure you keep a copy of the .apk), which I use to block the ad's on app's that do not have a paid for, ad free, version such as Android System Info. The other app from the Play Store that I use in conjunction with Siyah and BLN is, Missed Call Reminder, just for the call feature that Siyah does not cover.

Unlike Dorimanx, Siyah 6.0beta5 does not have a Backup/Restore feature but does remember the settings between boots. Besides, unlike Dorimanx's multitude of settings, Siyah's are minimal but effective. Very good on both battery and performance. A case, IMHO, of, "less is more!"

It would seem that the developer of Siyah, gokhanmoral, is now back in the kernel developing saddle after the birth of his son and I can only but hope that he sheds at least one more release our way. ;)

I've been using beta 4 with LSN, not been getting the same amount of juice I was getting with it and LSD. I'll try beta 5 along with your suggested settings!

I too am back with Siyah beta 5 and have no complaints.
@ironass....I found a similar app on the play store called 'NoLed' which is worth a try. You can configure it to display different coloured dots or icons on your screen to correspond to either missed calls, text mssg, email etc, as well as audible alert, vibrate....or not. I find it very good.
Something that has suddenly appeared out of nowhere today......my phone has started talking to me! Whenever I slide a page across in the app drawer, or the home screen, it tells me what page it is and I don't like it ,but am at a loss as to how to turn it off! I know voice talk tells you who is calling you or who is texting you, but these areas are unaffected. It's really annoying. Does anyone know how I can turn it off please?

This is a known problem caused by NoLED on JB and is the reason that I do not recommend it preferring instead to use the BLN built-in function of the kernel which does not consume as much battery as NoLED.

thank you buddy for posting the settings.
i was having weird things goin on with my S2 since the past week. it would just do continuous restarts. and stay warm all the time. and would get discharged very quickly and take much longer to get fully charged. i tried factory resetting, bought a new battery, upgraded to LSN. but all these dint seem to be helping that much. until today when i followed ur post and flashed siyah 6 beta5 and used the settings in STweaks, exactly as u have posted here.
well it seems to have helped definitely. its just one day though. will wait and see how the battery keeps charge the next couple days.
there are lots of other settings shown in STweaks. just the ones posted by you, needs to be changed?

No matter how many kernels I try with various ROM's... like a magnet with iron filings, a moth to a flame, I'm drawn back to NEAT ROM and Siyah.

As I have posted in the NEAT ROM thread, the latest Lite versions, LSN and LSS, are real winners for me in terms of look, feel, speed and battery.

Perhaps, what is more surprising, is that it is Siyah 6.0beta4 that is without a doubt, for me, the best kernel. Out of all the kernels I've used, it is beta4 that I always come back to. Originally developed to compliment the LSJ, leaked, Samsung firmware and, as the name suggests, a beta version, this kernel from just before Christmas, out performs all others for my usage. More so, than the later, beta5 which, although very good, is still no match for its predecessor when it comes to battery life and smoothness.

Admittedly, the beta4 lacks the bells and whistles of some other kernels but if you are looking for a solid, reliable, work horse, you'll find it hard to beat.

Using the minimum amount of settings in the STweaks app, free from the Play Store, that compliments the kernel, you can set this bad boy up to your liking in the minimum amount of time.

It would be great if the developer of the Siyah kernel, gokhanmoral, could give us just one more release for the SGSII but I fear that that is not going to happen as he has moved on to pastures new.

Nonetheless, he has left us with what I consider to be the best kernel for the SGSII bar none to date. He is, IMHO... the BOSS! :congrats:

Welcome to the forum Rarohan.

Can I just confirm you have the gs3. If you do the problem is an incompatible kernel. If you can get into download mode (volume down, power and menu) flashing the s3 version of siyah should fix it.

no, i have a Samsung galaxy s2. the problem is i believe you need to copy a zip file of siyah into the phone but i don't know how to do that without being able to turn on the phone and connect it to the computer.

I have a similar problem except my phone wont turn on at all ever since i tried do install the siyah kernal: Dev-Host - Siyah-s2-v6.0b5.tar - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service all it does is start turning on and then freeze on the siyah kernal animation. its a Samsung galaxy s2 with ice 4.0.3 installed. is there any way of fixing it?
thanks in advance.

I hope Shotty doesn't mind me interfering... but I can see your problem straight away. You are using the wrong Siyah kernel to try and root your phone on ICS, Android 4.0.3!

See the Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide, posts #1.5 and #1.7 for the correct kernel. Please read through all of the first 3 posts in the thread to give you all the information required for rooting the SGSII.

Hope that helps.
