Annoying facebook contact syncing.

I had about 50 contacts on my iphone, I switched them over to google contacts so they could be all in one place and easily sync up to my new HTC desire.
I noticed that I could sync up these contacts to their facebooks where appropriate, a feature I really like.

However I also have about 600 people on facebook, I dont know how many of them have their numbers on facebook but when I press 'phone' a big list of them fills the screen and its really irritating.

This seems like a glaring mistake to me, surely I can remove these 'facebook' contacts without affecting the link between my google contacts and their individual facebooks?

So far I love this phone and this was one of the most interesting features, now it turns out to be the most annoying!!

Its a major issue if you ask me, I only want the contacts I have put into the phone not everyone else, it worked perfectly well on my Touch Diamond, I could link FB to just my phone contacts. Hopefully HTC will provide an update to stop this happening.

It may be a good feature for some but it certainly isnt for me

This is the beauty with the new social networks. People have "friends" they don't even consider enough friends to text or call. So when the technology takes an assumption, those "not text/call friends" actually become an annoyance.

Yeah it is annoying, I imagine with most people out of all of their facebook friends there are only a select few you would ever need to phone or text. So it's a bit stupid having to have them all in your contact list. I want my contact list to only show the numbers that I actually need.

I had this problem too.

I removed the FB from the Acc and Sync >> Auto Sync >> manages Accounts are. Once this was done I disabled/logged out of facebook (this removes the FB contacts from the directory) then logged back in and everything is as I like it.........phone contacts only.

My FB is on a manual update so it works for me anyway

I just have the people widget on one of my home-screens and get that to show a special group I've created called 'Phonebook' - which contains all the people I would want on my phone.

Whenever I want to call/text/e-mail anyone I just go to that, pick the person I want to contact and then choose how to contact them.

That sounds like a good workaround if you want to keep the facebook for sense sync.

Works for me. I set it up and manage it by Google Contacts so I merged any duplicates and made sure I have pictures for anyone not on facebook.

I suppose my method works for me because I'm used to working like this...

Who do I want to contact > How do I want to contact them (eg. text)

Some people prefer to go...

How do I want to contact someone (eg. text) > Who do I want to contact

I read somwhere that there is a option in the contacts screen to view diff types of contacts so you can just uncheck facebook so no facebook contacts are listed. This way if you wanna msg someone using facebook you can use the app to do so.

if you press menu on the people screen and then select view. you can turn off the facebook contacts, and also filter for only contacts that have phone numbers...

I just don't see how you did this. If I disable sync contacts, there still there... if I log out... still there... the only way to purge the contacts from the 'Phone' & 'Messages' list is to remove the account entirely..

....which I did, then of course there is no option to manually link when you go back to edit the contact..

...so I re-added the Facebook for HTC, quickly went in and changed it to not sync contacts.. then went in to link contact, clicked on facebook and there are no contacts (obvious I guess since you havent synced them). So I reselected sync contacts and there all back again...

I cannot see any way whatsover to remove these from the 'Phone' and 'Messages' lists... so I might just have to go with a 'People' shortcut on the desktop... grrrrr

There's a workaround for getting the Facebook contacts out of your "phone" and "messages" apps, while still getting Facebook profile pictures for the people in your phonebook. I posted this on the HTC Droid Eris forum, but it also applies to you Desire folks:

Remove your "Facebook for HTC Sense" account and install this app:

Downloads - syncmypix - Project Hosting on Google Code

(The version of this app found in the market is only for Android 1.5, but the download above is for 2.1.)

You'll have to manually connect some of your contacts if their names don't match. This syncs their photos, but NOT the rest of their info. It does NOT bring all of your Facebook contacts into your phone and SMS apps.

This isn't my app; I just found it while browsing.

Seems to work well, though it does keep pulling one photo from a facebook contact that does not correspond to my phone contacts. It doesn't pull your own photo from facebook with is strange.

I have realised now I still have the google contacts in as well. Even with the sync disabled there still there, and you cannot remove the google sync... if you try it says you gotta do a master reset....
