do you think the eris will still be usable with new applications 2 years from now?

The Eris is too slow to even run some application TODAY let alone 2 years from now.

Forget Flash 10. No way Eris is going to run it.

The Eris produces a tremendous amount of lag from day one and its only going to get worse. Its simply does not have the computational power.

You have to understand that the Eris is an almost 3 YEAR old phone. The same CPU and chipset was used on phones from almost 3 years ago. (G1 phone)

The new snapdragon based units are 4-5 times faster.

The Eris is a "slow mess" already TODAY

all of this has already been dis-proven....

Most new apps will be usable because complicated apps are usually not needed. Some will not work and some do not work even now. You won't be seeing Google Earth working on the Eris even though it can be downloaded and installed on the Eris, even now.

I agree. Also, I've noticed that my Eris, running stock 1.5, behaves differently with various applications depending on how I have the device configured.

Apps that need GPS, location, etc, will cause me to feel a bit of tolerable lag that is not present in apps that have no such requirement, for example.

Not to mention whether or not I have everything pared down in the settings, such as haptic feedback turned off, animations, etc.

You certainly make this board interesting with your views. I agree with what you wrote and there is no denying the tech is older. Nevertheless, I can bet that phones like the droid and droid incredible will be outdated in about 3-6 months and there will be apps they cannot use.

Technology moves too fast to keep up with only if u have a hole in your pocket. Thats the thing most should be keep in mind. Apps will get more complex and we will see less being able to work for the eris, but same goes for anything of that sort. Besides the eris only has google earth(which is useless) that doesn't work as well as a few games

You might as well, he never will. Everything he says is "factually correct" even when he is lying.

He had me fooled for a while there, back in his or her first few posts.

It does appear, now, that it's just a classic troll with a well-oiled sense of how to sound as if s/he knows what they are talking about.

"Artificial," indeed.

Okay folks, let me express something here. its one thing to not like a phone, and another to debate the capabilities of a phone whether its new or old with the software thats available in the market now-a-days, but its totally uncalled for to continue to bash the phone (any phone) in its own section over and over. It flags the poster as a troll and can result in posting privileges being suspended.

So please take this into account when posting, its not tolerated and I for certain will take swift action if I see it again. Remember, put yourself in the other persons shoes. You would not like it if someone came into your phones area and did the same thing, because it can happen. No one is immune. They all get old, obsolete and are only king of the hill for a very short time in this fast paced technological world of ours.

Carry on.

Oh, very well...

The G1 shipped with a Qualcomm MSM7201; the Eris ships with a MSM7600. They have a whole lot in common, but they're not the "EXACT same CPU and chipset."

I'm getting bored with this. Could we have a new troll by, say, Thursday?

I'm pretty sure putting cats in blenders is a crime as well. Could we ban those disturbing pictures as well?

There are plenty of threads that go off-topic. I'm glad you mentioned it. What do we do when other threads go off-topic about things like taxes, ex-girlfriends' tits, menstrual cycles, kitty killing, and competitor-bashing? I wouldn't be bringing these up if they weren't true.

Again, CPU and chipset is exactly the same. MSM7201 and MSM7600 is a SOC meaning multiple chips on one dye. I NEVER said the SOC is exactly the same I said CPU and chipset are the same....and they ARE, only difference between the SOCs you posted is one is GMS and one CDMA.

Close, kinda...well, not really at all. While both of them are powered by similar CPU's (both are rated at 528mhz, etc.), the technology isn't as old and as outdated as you seem to think. The G1 was first released on Oct. 22, 2008. That's 1.5 years old, not 3 as you have previously mentioned. Further, the Eris has quite a bit more RAM (256mb vs. 192mb) and more system storage as well.

The phone the Eris is based on, the Hero, is just now becoming a year old. The Eris is 6 months old. It's not going to be the latest and greatest technology, but it's not exactly a slouch either.

It will run most apps just fine, just like the folks running iPhone 3G's (not the 3GS). Most applications are just not that intensive.
