The lag issue seems to be a kernel issue. I rooted my phone and loaded a third party kernel on the phone. The good news is that the new kernel fixed the lag instantly.

What does that mean for the average user? It means that the issue can be in fact fixed and that it's not a hardware issue. Users who choose not to root the device will simply have to wait for Samsung and their respective carriers to push out an OTA update which will most definitely include an updated kernel.

it's kinda off topic but...what kernel are you using? Lol.

I'm due for an upgrade from my s2 in mid June. I was dead set on the s4 but all the top reviewer recommended the HTC one due to the s4's lag issues and lack of memory out of the box so I was very tempted to go for the HTC one. But after watching many videos on that phone there's a fair number of people talking about build quality issues around the casing etc and that HTC sense has some weird quirks! and seems really crappy! So now I'm thinking of coming full circle and staying with my original choice of the s4..!

Such a tough decision!

I'm Coming from my current galaxy s2 so the s4's 'plastic' build quality doesn't bother me as I'm used to it on my s2 and I always put it in a case anyway.. the HTC one does look nice and is certainly very snappy and lag free but I think that quirky HTC sense would annoy me!

Maybe I'm just used to touchwiz (which I always preferred out of all the other launchers I've tried).. I'm sure I'd get used to HTC sense but the videos of the workings of sense on the HTC one really put me off..!

I am in love with this phone!!!

I came from the Droid RAZR MAXX, which I thought was a great phone, but I learned on the first day that issues I was having with the DRM were with the phone and not my imagination.

Whenever I would write texts on the DRM, every word would be misspelled. I thought I was fat fingering, but that was not the case. While in the store, every word was coming up correct. My Bluetooth connections were spotty. and frustrating, sometimes in the car, I would get half-way to my destination before I would get a connection. With the s4 connections are instantaneous, and hand-offs between BT devices is awesome.

There are few quirks, but I'm working through them, and I still find some new feature every day. In fact I thought it was funny that I was browsing Amazon the other day and saw an item for NFC tags. Immediately the light bulb went off in my head and I remembered that I had NFC on the phone!

I really couldn't afford it, but I am so glad I got it!

I'm a little confused on some of the issues mentioned. The lag for opening phone or contacts or messenger all seem to be sub 1 second on mine with factory OS.

I'm also not sure on why anyone cares about installing apps on the SD card - what size apps are people putting on the phone that the internal storage can't fit? I have over 80 apps and plenty of space left.
I will keep all data (photos, videos, books, music, etc) on the SD card though - this should ensure that the 16GB internal storage never runs out.

I moved from the HTC Desire HD (which did suffer from lag) that I had for a couple of years and I'm very happy with my S4.

I'm up for renewal and not sure if I should wait for the new Motorola X phone and maybe the HTC one might come to version.

But, I'm curious who's happy they moved and who isn't.

What are your likes and dislikes of the S4?
I was waiting for moto but gave up hope. There's been no announcement which means we're months away. If HTC hadn't screwed me on my dinc 2 (they promised an update in August and still haven't delivered) I would have a DNA. I'm glad I went with the S4.

two days in, and i like the phone a lot so far. the upgrade from my DX reminds me of how i felt when i upgraded from the LG Chocolate to the DX. waiting 3.5 years to upgrade has some advantages.

as for the lag, i haven't experienced that yet, but there are multiple threads on how to solve the issue.

yup. No lag here either. I tried the "fixes" and so no difference so went back to stock.

Very simple GAMES! I have 5 occupied more than 4Gb, and the 16GB model is real only 9GB for user data

Came from an EVO 4G.

I think this phone is over-hyped. The hardware is great but I think Samsung did a poor job with the software (HTC does a better job w/ software). Many of the gimmicky features are just that plus they feel like they are still in beta. They don't work very well (voice control, eye controlled scrolling and "stay-alive" feature, etc...). The screen is nice but the auto-brightness sucks. The Samsung bloat is annoying (as is all bloat). Took a lot of tweaking and turning off "features" to get the phone to work smoothly.

The phone is basically an "incremental" upgrade to my EVO and most other "high-end" smartphones. Faster, more memory (love the 64GB card option), bigger screen, better camera but other than those standard improvements, I could have stuck with my EVO and been happy.

I'll probably be rooting soon which will (hopefully) fix many of the annoying software features.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the phone but...it's just another smartphone with nothing really new or revolutionary which is truly useful.

One man's opinion.
