New to the forum,

NAmes eddy, loving my new fone. Only issue is that my android os has used nearly 600mb of data in less than 40 hours. I have no clue how ill stay under my 6gb monthly alotment in the share plan. Seems like my fone is eating up all the data out of 3 of us on the share plan.....

Hello ej86, welcome to the forums!

That data usage is not right and it looks like you might want to get a handle on it pretty quickly! :)

Here is an S4 forum, see what they can tell you! Samsung Galaxy S4 - Android Forums

I am not sure what methods your phone has of checking on your data usage. I do not know how you can tell which app is eating it. Probably something you can turn off though. I think you should be able to do something like Menu/settings/ Accounts and sync and see what all you have going on. Need to turn something off! :p

If you can get on to a wifi network, that does not use your plans data either.

as you can see, it's all from os, and says it's all background

Is this your first android device? If not, I have a hunch that when the phone was activated, Google Restore was left on. Doing so without knowing will cause the play store to download every app that you had on your previous device. So if you didn't immediately go on wifi, it would have done all of that over data. The other possibility is that your device downloaded and installed a rather large firmware update.

Have removed google sync and every other kind of syncs there are, I even disabled background data usage, and the os still used over 100mb since yesterday afternoon.

Been playing drag racing app online like crazy for the past 2 days, but my usage says that app only used 4mb in past 2 days. So im clueless as to how im going through 1 gb of data every 3 days

Yep, that shows android os used the majority of the data. I, too, wonder if you got an update?

Don't know what sort of data plan you have, but an unlimited one would look kind of good right about now. :)

Have a 6gb shared plan, and so far my phone only all together used 1gb in the past 2 day, FOR NO REASON. My b3st friend got an s4 2 weeks ago, and his total android os data usage is under 40mb AFTER 2 WEEKS.

Checied his wifi data thinking there is more usage there, and his android os only used 25mb of wifi. So between his wifi and data his android os for the same exact fone used 65mb total in two weeks.

While my os used 590mb of data after 44 hours.

The kicker here is that he has his google backup sync on, I do not, and I still have 7 times his os usage in 1/7th of the time frame. Wtf

Welcome to the forum ej :wavey:

Which S4 do you have? the i9505 recently got an update in germany.

You may benefit from a factory reset. When I first got my T-Mobile S4, it was using all data as hotspot data and I didn't notice it until I was almost out of hotspot data. T-Mobile tech had me do a factory reset and that fixed it. Maybe you're in a similar situation.

In phone settings says my phone is I545, I have no clue about an update, but I just took this screenshot right now. Still 48 hours ave not passed since this fone was activated, 650mb used by os and results in 1.03gb toral in less than 2 days

well i just reset my phone to its factory setting 3 and a half hours ago to the minute, and since then the "android OS" has used 137mb of data?

I have all my sync stuff completely off since the reset, didnt re doanload any of my aps, didnt update a goddamn thing in the past 3 hours, and yet its 137?

my friends total android OS usage is 65mb since JUNE 4th, i nearly trippled his usage in 3 hours? something is not right here. seriously. At this rate my 6gb data cap for the month will be surpassed in a week.

Have you actually gone on the MyVerizon website and checked your data usage there? That's what Verizon is going to go by, not the data usage that is reported by your phone.

And yes, those numbers look really high to me too.

Yes, i have done that, MULTIPLE TIMES, and the data usages coincide perfectly.

My fone was activated on a 6gb share plan which billing cycle ends on the 22nd. When my fone was first activated, the other users used only about 300mb of total data up until i bought my fone and joined their plan. Since then (52 hours since activation), our shared data is at 1.5gb. ALL BECAUSE OF MY PHONE. which directly relates to the data my phone is showing.

I have a question guys. Does using any app force android os to use a crap tone of background data usage?

Just took this screenshot right now. My android os usage jumped from 137mb yesterday to 388mb now after I just been watching youtube videos for about one hour using 4g. The actual yt usage is low but android os going out of control again

I'd have to think there is a fault somewhere and I'd phone Verizon maybe get it swapped, between Wi-Fi and data, my T-Mobile UK s4 hasn't even reached 500mb in over a month for the android os section!

YEa ill do that tomorrow b3cause today I work all day. I factory reset my fone around 4pm yesterday, its 8:30am right niw and my os used 400mb in 16 hours. This is m8nd boggling. And I have locations off, syncs off, updates off, backup off. My mind is blown

Well I think I have figured this thing all out.

Just had my lunch break and during the break I was playing youtube videos, while eating. I was watching vids on the yiutube app for about 35-40 minutes, when I finished my "android OS" data usage went from 375mb to about 540mb after watching yt.

I gues yt data is somehow directly involved with the os data even if the two have their own seperate graphs in data usage settings. Now it would be good if someone can indeed confirm this on their fones just by watch8ng 10-15 minutes of yt vids

I also recommend installing GSam Battery Monitor - really good free tool to narrow down culprit of your problems. I know we are not talking about battery drain, but it generates a detailed list of all the running processes. Maybe that will give you some additional clue?

I think I can confirm for a fact that pretty much streaming any kind of video from any site just kills ur usage and makes android os usage go up. Im on wifi all day and first I check my usage, then I streamed the local weather report from my local news station and android os usage jumped about 10mb.

So far been watching som yt vids throughout the past 5 hours on wifi. And the wifi usage of android os is at 850mb.

so that pretty much confirms it
