Help Galaxy S2 stuck on boot screen

Hi everyone I need some help.

This morning my Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) wouldn't turn on and after removing the battery it won't do anything and I'm stuck on the first screen (it shows the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo and model number).

I've read a few of these posts and none are helping, and I can't enter recovery or download mode using the power+home+volume up technique. Kies also doesn't acknowledge my phone yet it does start to charge when plugged in.

I have the latest version of android (I think it was 4.0.1 but I can't check now), it's not rooted and I'm on O2, and I've had the phone about 18 months.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to fix this.

If it's not rooted then it seems most likely the battery is dead, if you have access to another battery(friends) I'd try it, otherwise just keep it plugged into you computer for a while to try charging it!

Have reported to mods so thread can be moved to correct section

Sorry didn't realise I was in the wrong section

The battery is working fine because the screen comes on, it just doesn't go past the boot screen, and when plugged into a charger it shows a full battery. I did try another battery and it was the same.

I'm afraid that as you are un-rooted and cannot appear to get into either Recovery mode or Download mode, which can be tricky if you are not experienced at doing so, (see videos), then there is not a lot that can be done and possibly the best advice is to take your phone to the nearest Samsung Service Point and explain what has happened.

Thanks, I actually managed to get into download mode today and attempted to reflash it thru Odin following advice from the O2 forum and so far that has failed many times and pressing the volume up + Home + Power buttons to be able to do a factory reset does nothing.

I don't know if there's much else I can do?

Re-download the stock Samsung firmware for your CSC code from SamMobile and try flashing it again by using the step-by-step instructions and video in the link of #1.7 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide.

can i use download mode to get all my data before i try to install stock update?

also where does it download to? it's not recognised in kies or anything

Download is for use with flashing using Odin.

PLAN A: Try re-booting with SD card removed. Sometimes works if you have moved app's to SD or have an SD problem.

PLAN B: Soft or Hard reset as described in Hawker's post, here.

Yes and no!

A Factory Reset in Recovery mode would be my first choice. Flashing another firmware, "could", "maybe", solve your problem as the update process endeavours to update and re-integrate your app's and settings. On the other hand, it could just re-integrate or exacerbate, your problem.

i was getting the black screen while on a call, so i pulled the battery out because i couldnt hang up. that's when the screen stuck on me

how would i flash the firmware again

Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: samsung official


does this just mean my phone is not rooted?
do i need to change the Custom Binary Download to Yes, before I can try to restore the firmware etc?

my main laptop is a Macbook Pro.

i'm just worried doing a factory restore will not resolve this, as it really just wipes data??

Odin is not compatible with Mac I'm afraid. Heimdall is for Mac although, I must confess, that I am not familiar with it.

It depends on what is causing your boot loop. If, as you say, you turned your phone off during a call connection, then you could well have a boot loop from, say, the phone .apk.

Either way, if you take it to a Samsung Service Point, their first recourse would be to completely wipe the phone, internal format and Factory reset, and then re-flash the firmware.

I see your details say your still on ICS, but what firmware/ROM and kernel are you on.

Early JB kernels had a power-pull bootloop bug.
If you are on one of these affected kernels and you happen to be rooted, all you need to do is to restore a CWM backup of /data.
If you dont have a recent one, do a CWM backup followed immediately by a CWM restore.

Even if you are still on ICS and are rooted, it still may be worth doing a CWM backup+restore.

i called Samsung and they are going to take it for repair i bought the phone privately from ebay so thought i was screwed, but there is 2years warranty on them??

lesson learnt anyway, regular backups will be made

Sounds like an OS problem then. The only way around that would be to re-flash the firmware.

Standard warranty is 2 years.

CWM = ClockWorkMod and is for rooted phones only. It allows for mirror image backups of OS, app's and settings. Very, very, useful for modders like me. See, "nandroid", backups in post #2 of the, "Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide".

I have the same problem and same phone, android version 4.1.2

Did factory reset 3 times from recovery mode and once from setting menu. After not touching my phone for a while after phoning I find my phone burning hot and not responding, so battery out, and after restarting it gets stuck on samsung logo.

Can it be a hardware problem? I had problem with my sd card previously, it kept unmounting itself, so I changed card because it killed my phone battery to load the data from the card every hour or so. Could this do more damage to the phone?

Will flashing rom help?

samsung has 2 years warranty

it's a bit more than a year old. I don't know if I have Samsung warranty, but where I bought it the software warranty has expired, so they will only fix it if it's a software problem

when you call them have your serial number, IMEI etc etc

Quick update.

Everytime I did a factory recet I did something new to see what is the source of the problem. The last one was that I didn't install an app that I istalled a month ago, and since that it has been working perfectly. The application is AccuWeather from Accuweather.com https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.accuweather.android

However, is it not normal that an app that is used by many ppl (I also have it on my tablet), which I used for a month without problem should cause something like this? Should I still bring it to repair or just be happy that it's working?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Mr_Billrar!

As you have successfully rooted your phone, you could try going into Recovery mode and wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache as per #2.5 of the Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide over on the All Things Root section of the forum.
