HP Slate leaked

me in the engadget "article" said:
i've come to expect and accept this kind of prejudiced bias from engadget, but it's sad to see how the majority of commenters seem to have bought in to this crap

nilay takes an out of context quote from an already abysmal and obviously biased "review" and everyone's shouting "fail" (or in this case "meh") ?

Looks like a huge chunk of block.
it's smaller than the ipad, 0.7mm thicker

As expected, looks to be an epic fail :p Looks like a huge chunk of block.
Unlike the iPad, eh? :D

Seriously I reckon the iPad would be a killer device IF it ran a real desktop OS - even Mac OSX (as was anticipated before it was announced) - oh...and had USB sockets.

Mobile phone/PDA operating systems are not really a good idea for a tablet...be that WinMo, Android or iPhone-OS.

Chome-OS might be different - then again it might not be...we'll just have to wait and see.

it doesn't have the specs to run a full-on desktop os
also, i'd include hdmi output in the wanted sockets list

so basically, a totally different device

i don't quite agree, i could definitely see a use for an android tablet
what is it that android couldn't do that you'd wanna do on a tablet?
surely not office work or programming; you'd want a keyboard for that (laptop/netbook)
not intensive graphics work, photoshop etc. since a tablet wouldn't have the horsepower for that

Guess what? Apple already has a portable device running OSx with USB ports and HDMI, its called a MACBOOK!!! Again, how mentally challenged are you if you still havent been able to figure out the iPad is NOT trying to be a laptop? Look at the HP Slate, its packed with all that and the early reviews are saying its just basically a touchscreen netbook. Who on earth wants that? They would just buy a real netbook. Thats is NOT a tablet. Once again, Apple got it right with what they were trying to make :)

Serious question because I honestly don't know. What were they trying to make? I don't get what the point is. Isn't it just a really big iPod touch? At least that is what it looks like. I admit that the animation and flipping programs they show in the commercials looks cool (computer generated as the layer type says), but what the hell is it supposed to do? It isn't a computer, it isn't an iPhone, it isn't a netbook and it isn't even a traditional tablet....so WTF is the silly thing. You talk in other threads about it and talk about what it can do. So what can it do? If someone where to own a macbook and an iPhone what is the use of this thing?

Oh and BTW, all tablets suck. :D

Isnt a swimming pool just a really big bathtub? Yes technically, but no because they serve different purposes. People buying the iPad get it for different reasons. Some are buying it instead of a netbook. Believe it or not, there are PLENTY of people who have zero need for multiple USB ports, watching flash videos and needing to have 50 programs running at once. They will use their desktop if they need to do that but dont NEED it while out and about.

I bought it mostly for times when I am out and about and want to listen to my music, play games on a badass 10 inch screen, surf the net etc...but I dont want to bring my laptop along and have to sit down to use it. You can walk around and use the iPad, I did it all weekend in San Francisco. Had my headphones plugged in with my iPod going and was online walking down the street and even posting on this forum, try doing that with a laptop or netbook, you cant. Some might be able to on their phone. If you can read whats posted in a forum on your tiny phone screen and then reply on the tiny keyboard as you walk, thats serious talent, I cant be bothered to do that. So for me, its portability and ease of use for when I dont feel like walking around with a laptop that weighs 5 times as much.

how about 1 usb port, any flash content and running 2 programs at once?

that's a very good metaphor and i do agree with it - merely the size changes surprisingly much
but my gripe is, by what we've seen so far, the ipad has nothing over the slate (or adam, or gemini, or wepad...) save for better battery life and being available sooner, but it costs just as much
so why not wait a couple of months and go for the better device for the same price?
who knows, one day you might actually want to print something from your device, stream a video to an external screen via hdmi or view a website that uses flash

I appreciate your explanation, but I still don't really get it. I guess it is just me. Then again, I though the first tablets were just as useless. I also don't do a lot of walking while trying to type on the forum and I really enjoy flash videos. I do find it hilarious that just like many of Apple's other devices someone else came up with the idea. Apple then took the idea, made it a little sleeker and now it is the hot new thing. I'm just waiting for them to make toasters.
