I just bought a G1!

I've wanted to drop some money on an ancient phone myself (usually eyeing an HTC HD2). Have fun! :)
Doooooooooooo it!
A friend's G1 convinced me to go with Android. :)
I have goosebumps just thinking about owning the G1! It hasn't come yet but I've already bookmarked the Wiki pages to root and ROM it. I may even try to coax a data-only SIM out of T-Mobile for it. I have to say that I am glad I couldn't afford the iPhone back in the day...not sure I would be here; also, I wouldn't be running the best mobile OS out!

Thanks be to Google!

N4 and G1 FTW!

P.S. My grouper is lonely! She plays bedtime music for el ni

Isn't that the device that runs every OS?

If you are talking about the HD2, Pretty much, I have seen the HD2 run Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, Android 1.5-4.1 and even say FirefoxOS on it.

If you are talking about the G1, I have seen Android 1.0-4.1 on it. 4.1 is PAINFULLY slow because the G1 lacks a GPU that can deal with the GUI.

Yeah, I was talking about the HD2. Crazy phone!

There's a contractor at work on my team that still uses his G1 as his daily phone !

It's a little worn. And slow. But it works and just keeps ticking!

I've also got my HTC Droid Eris that's pretty much in pristine condition...started-out with 1.5 Cupcake. Followed shortly by 1.6 Donut. Followed interminably by 2.1 (ask Frisco how long we waited ;) :)).

I've heard the Eris is very similar hardware-wise to the G1.

Anyway, great acquisition, jmar!

Thanks scary,

I'm excited to use it on and off as a Daily Driver. Give my N4 a break to increase its longevity, perhaps.

Also, I want to see what it was like to tinker on the very first Android phone.

I'm also interested to see how Android behaved before multi-touch was implemented (apparently the G1 was capable of it but was software disabled at release. ROMing apparently sorted that all out...yeah, did some reading last night after I bought it).

I always wanted the G1 ever since I started on Android back in the Ally days but was on Verizon.

Gonna be fun!

I have recently played with the G1. It took a bit to get use to because of have feature naked it is compared to my daily driver (GS3). But even with out the features that in am afforded by ICS and JB it is a durable phone. People complained about how unwieldy it is. And yes it was a small brick. But, you could kick the hell out of it and it would keep going.

It's aliiiiiiiiiiiiiive!

Feels weird owning a phone running the oldest commercially available Android OS version while also owning one running the newest commercially available Android OS version.

If I remember correctly, the G1 was the HTC Magic, while the G2 was the Hero/Desire Z/Eris.

I've often though about seeking out a Nexus One and Nexus S to complete my collection.

Ah, yes! I keep getting the G1 mixed-up with the Hero...thanks for that clarification, jhawkkw :).

The Hero does look very much like the Eris. I should load-up 1.5 on it again just for grins, but I'm not sure I've got enough time to wait for it to boot-up ;) :).

I just learned that the dream and magic were devices in which one ROM would flash on either due their similarities.

I'm in the process of getting the correct radio/bootloader combo so I can do just that.

Earlier today I thought I bricked this G1! Turns out I didn't have an OS loaded. Crazy tinkering took place back in the day! I've been so spoiled by these Nexi over the last two years.

So I learned that certain ROMs can only boot on certain bootloader/radio combos. I finally was finally able to flash the latest bootloader/radio combo in conjunction with a ROM made for that combo. Crazy G1! Who knew that flashing could be so specific?

I soft bricked this phone four times before finally flashing the correct ROM for said bootloader/radio combo. The G1 is truly nuts. Gonna try some Gingerbread ROMs soon!

I should totally be sleeping right now, BTW!

I feel like I've never been more addicted to Android than tonight!

I could be wrong, but I think that might be an HTC thing regarding specific bootloaders and radios. Never really had that issue on the Samsung or Nexus devices I've owned. I've seen Scotty mention needing specific hboots and what not for specific roms, so that's how I'm drawing my conclusion.
You are spot on. Seems like this was something that ROM flashers dealt with back in the day. I soft bricked this thing so many times last night trying to figure it all out.
