wireless charging receiver pad question

I got a couple of those wireless receiver pads for my s4, along with a charging station, my case etc..

anywho, it does leave a bump.....i thought I saw somewhere on this forum, of someone taking the pad apart, and running it naked (just the coil) to avoid the bump (seems there is a cooling pad on the inside) does anyone remember who did that, or a link to it? I want to try it.

It does seem to get hot while charging, im afraid the cooling pad is needed. But, I am also wondering if it just feels warm because its now pressed against the back of the case, and the heat is transferring better...because it feels warmer under just normal charging too now (plugged in).

The only info on "taking apart" the wireless receivers that I have found is specific to one receiver in particular, which has a foil sticker on each side. As per some disputable information, the foil blocks the NFC signal, so you can peel the foil off to permit NFC functions. One user in particular has posted that it may have something to do with the glue not drying completely as they removed the foil, reinstalled it some time later and NFC was functional through the foil.

In any event, you probably DO NOT want to run the coil naked. The "pad" you are talking about is actually a shield made of special material to block/prevent current leakage when the phone is charging. Apparently, its removal may cause energy transfer to the metal parts on your battery/phone components which not only can damage your phone, but can be a fire hazard!

The thread above is rather long, but very well worth reading if you truly want to understand the wireless charging function and the many alternative products available.

They are available through amazon or ebay, but they ship from China and Hong Kong. The most popular one I have read about that other people vouch for are from a seller in England: Fonesalesman

I ordered mine from him and I received them in Southern California in 9 days. Someone on the East Coast told me theirs arrived in 1 week.

If you decide to order from him, pay attention, as he offers 2 different ones: 1 for NFC device-to-device only, and 1 with NFC device-to-device+NFC tag functionality. It's not really a big deal though because if you order the former and want to use NFC tags, simply peel the foil stickers off each side and it will work. It literally takes only a few seconds to do it.

Here's a pic of my 0.6mm receiver from fonesalesman. I barely installed it yesterday and last night, the interaction with my NFC tag was kind of hit-and-miss. This morning, I trimmed away some of the excess plastic around the coil (without removing any of the foam shield) and now it's working flawlessly:

did you take the sticker off both sides? Your running it with the foam shield exposed? I was afraid to do that. I assume that a heat shield made of the same type of material you see on some CPUs, inbetween the CPU and heat sink. It sure looks and feels like it.

Also thanks for the link, I was able to order the thin receiver, also got one of his charging pads too to test, as shipping was cheap, and I this price of the pad was good.

Just got my Samsung back cover and two wireless pads. Very pleased with these and with the 50% off coupon for registering my s4 it was a great deal. I have one in my office and anticipate putting the other in my car.

Yes, I peeled the foil off both sides. There's no problem having that pad exposed - it's a shield to prevent current leakage outside the coil area. If you order from fonesalesman, there's two options. One has the foil stickers, and the other does not. They are the exact same receiver though. He just charges you about a buck to provide it without his label.

That's a really good idea, which, I'm sad to say, I most likely would have never thought of. I would have just kept fumbling with the cable when I need to charge the phone in my car.

Just ordered a Samsung charging pad (50% off deal) and bought the receiver elsewhere since the Samsung back detracts from the thinnest of the phone. Haven't received either. All the charging pads I've seem run an adaptor to the plug and then USB (on the input end anyway) and a typical coax type power plug to the pad itself. Since the adaptor is adapting AC to DC does that mean one could run the hybrid power cord from a cigar lighter plug in straight into the pad and have it function as designed? With so many car mfgs (Chrysler, Toyota) adding Qi chargers as add on console equipment in 2014 I am guessing, yes. I think my cigar plug-in steps down from 12V to 5v automagically. Probably need to verify that.
