I ordered a new battery and just plugged it. When it starts charging, it shows the empty battery icon for a second, then it shows the battery as half full for a couple of seconds, then it goes to this screen attached.

Is it just that the battery was completely depleted, or is the battery defective?

Well, the big questions about that issue would all have to do with the brand of the battery and its quality, the charger and cable, and the overall condition of the battery contacts both on the battery and in the battery well where the battery's contacts meet the device's contacts.

If it's a cheapo.. welcome to the world of probable junk. If it's a great OEM or brand name battery such as Seido, etc, then examine those contacts and make sure they're all there and not damaged/bent and that they are clean (use alcohol on cotton swabs).. then if all is ok, you're good.

If you get the same result, and the triangle doesn't go away after a time, replace the cable and charger. ;)

Thanks for your response. The battery looks exactly like the Samsung battery that came with my phone. As near as I can tell, it's a legitimate Samsung battery. As far as I can tell, the contacts are pristine (it's supposed to be brand new). I tried cleaning the contacts to no effect.

The cable and charger works just fine with my other battery, but I don't have another cable at home. I'll leave it plugged in over night tonight to see what, if anything, changes.

-edit- the only difference between the original and the new one that I can see is the original has a grey rectangle at the other end of the very top (where the contacts are) and the new one has a black one.

That yellow triangle means the battery is completely depleted and cannot turn on the phone. If you had a similar triangle with a thermometer beside it and it was blinking that would mean you have problems with your charging port. I'm pretty sure the yellow triangle with the battery crossed our will go away once you're fully charged.
I left it charging over night, and was just woken up by the low battery beeping sound. I excitedly checked my phone to see that the phone had started up and had been charged to 11%, but it had stopped charging for some reason. As I was trying to get it to start chargin again, I got a message that read "bettery disconected". I turned the phone off so it would charge faster, and now we're back to the battery screen.

This is becoming an obsession with me SvenTheGnome. If you don't feel comfortable posting where you purchased this battery and the brand send me a PM with that info. That black rectangle you mentioned is bothering me. Usually those would be white and turn pink or red indicating water damage. I'd like to be able to view some images of the battery from the website or if possible post an image of the top of the battery in this thread. I'm thinking you may have been ripped off.

I being it off Amazon. I messaged the seller and am in the process of getting a refund. Knowing that rectangle was a water indicator makes me think it's water damaged. I tried attaching the pics you requested, but the attachment function is not working for me.

No matter what you do the phone will continue to do that and will eventually never turn on again I had two phones do that to me.
