I updated Google Maps today to version 7.0.1 and my icons for both Maps and Navigation disappeared. I easily found Maps in my apps list and reestablished it's icon where I've always had it (for ease of launching). But... I can't find the app for Navigation anywhere as I'd like to reestablish that icon as well.

The odd thing is that I can still get to the Navigaiton icon via my shortcut in CarHome Ultra that I had created prior to updating. I can also launch Navigation via S Voice. But... I don't want to have to get to it in a round about fashion.

BTW... I already restarted my S3 since I've heard that the icons sometimes show up after updates only after a reboot. Didn't work this time as I still can't find the app. It must be there somewhere though.

Confused...

I still have Navigation...but it has changed...a lot! Not sure whether I will get used to this LOL!

Ok, here's something strange...I only have it in the folder it was in on my homescreen...not in my apps tray...hmmm...looks like it has been built in to google maps (which I know it was before, but I didn't use that one...)

Tap on the icon at the top that looks like directions telling you to turn right...if that makes sense...

Yeah... I follow ya. I can also get to navigation by tapping on the "right turn" looking thing when I pull up maps. But... I still no longer have a "navigation" icon. Also, before the update, didn't "navigation" show up as a separate app in our app lists (and I mean separate from "maps")?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I can only uninstall updates. BTW, I probably should have mentioned this in my orig. post, but I'm not rooted.

Does it appear as though they simply combined "maps" and "navigation" and made them one app as opposed to two separate apps? That would explain a lot.

Thanks for replies and suggestions, but I wish they hadn't gotten rid of the navigation icon.

I think they have...I always had it in my app drawer...maybe you had it hidden? I only set it up on my homescreen recently, before that I would go in my app drawer to get it...it looks pretty good to be honest, shows roadworks and things...and I think it gives you different route options to choose from which you didn't get before (or at least I never figured out how to!)

Well I will get to try it out soon enough...

No... not hidden, I don't think. I've had the nav icon sitting on one of my home screens since day one. Unless it was one of the "pre-installed" icons, I had to placed it there by long pressing on it in my app drawer and dragging it to the home screen. So, I'm guessing it wasn't hidden. I dunno... I'm old and maybe my mind's going.

I agree that it appears to have quite a bit more detail and looks to be more slick than it previously was. I'm going to play with it a little on the way home from work tonight.

I hope it handles night/day lighting better though. I've never been able to figure out how to keep it from blinding me when driving at night. I can't get it to convert over to a night/darker screen when it's dark out. It's like trying to drive with someone holding a flashlight in your face. I'm lucky I've not run over someone.

What use is navigation if I can't move while using it :what::D

This just sucks!

What happened to my history? I had several places that I used Navigation to get to (mainly for traffic updates) and they are now gone from what I can tell.

Ugh...I get to learn a new app while driving home in rush hour traffic. Can't they just leave well-enough alone

EDIT:

OK, so on the My Location / Destination screen, it shows my "WORK" as a place where I don't work. WTF? Where did it get this idea from? They are in my building, but several suites down. My actual office is also clearly shown as a tenant in this building, so how has it assumed I work for the electrical company severa suites down? Is this in my profile somewhere?

EDIT again:

This app is horrible. I like the appearance, but things don't work like they used to. I used to be able to click on the ETA and get a traffic overview. I don't have that anymore. From that same traffic overview, I used to be able to ask for an alternate route. I don't have that either.

They've dumbed this thing down.

The bummer is that since its a system app, unless youre rooted, i dont think theres any way to go back to the old version
(Or does it have the "uninstall updates" option in app manager?)
I uninstalled updates. It crashed my phone. Then crashed it again upon update uninstall. Everything is back to normal now and I'm stuck in traffic

I think I read something about beta.

I think this version was public beta tested(?) If its as bad as people are saying though i dont know why its been pushed to the masses
I dont use the app though so i cant really judge it mate. I hope google arent gona make a habit of dumbing things down at the expense of established android users

I tend to resist change. If it's for the better I use it and become proficient at it, then I embrace it. I wanted to try using it on the way home but making my phone crash halted that mess.

It's there a reset built into the phone? Holding down the power button didn't bring up the power menu, but both times my phone crashed (stuck on the same screen and unresponsive), it seems like holding down power for 10 seconds out so may have caused a reboot shortly thereafter.
