leaving home area with 4g

Hey all,

So I am new to smart phones (ZTE Avid4G) and i took a trip up to northern Michigan. I was traveling on I-75 northbound and suddenly lost my 4G connection even though I was still in the home 4G area. I got it back about 25 miles miles north, as i was still in the home area only to lose it again. It showed no internet connection as a message when trying to connect. Even in the extended home area i did not have a connection.

Some questions. One, when i went into the extended home area, shouldn't i at least be in 3G and be able to connect and would i have talk and text and slower connection?? I didn't try talk or text because i thought they wouldn't work either. Thinking about it now, i did show 3-4 bars signal strenght..

Was the no internet connection meant only for Data?

I have the $60.00 unlimited talk, text and Data plan and if my phone does not automatically switch down to 3G to get data, it may not be worth paying that much a month.

Is there a way to turn off the 4G on these phones when i am out of the area?>>

Help, i am still stuck in the "dumb phone mode" :hmpf:

If you are back in your Home area go down to post 3 and do That. (Including going and doing the link there.)

As has been explained to me here, regardless what the Metro site Alludes to, you are Not Guaranteed to get Any data in Extended Home areas. You may, you may not. You Should have talk and text there though and your bars show you probably did.

And, that's under the Old deal, I'm not sure ANYONE has a clue right now how Extended Home Areas will work under the new combined network.

Bruce, thanks. My 4G works great at home. I guess i didn't realize that data is that sporatic. Oh well, at least i have text and WiFi hot spots. We will see how it all works when i go way up north next month.

metro doesnt do well in the burbs and the sticks.

They do great in the burbs just depends where you are the cover almost all of Florida

In florida metro does excellent unless you go by the everglades

I think it also matters the size of the town your in.

Here it's kind of weird. If I had a SWAG it's almost like they used people density maps. Where people are the thickest here the signal's better. I was at a place today maybe 3 miles from I-75 and had 1 almost unusable bar of 1G. It was just in a stickier part of town people density wise. It's was maybe 6-7 miles from my place where the signal is just fine. I am 3 miles from downtown Slocala.
