Root Trouble with Unroot Guide

I'm on the rooted stock ROM currently. I've been trying to follow this guide:

http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-a...evo-v-4g-ruu-flashing-guide-unroot-guide.html

I've gotten the boot loader to say "RELOCKED" at the top, but that's as far as I can get. I run the RUU in the link and I get to the point where it says "Upgrade" the ROM version.

I hit the upgrade button and it comes back with:

From: Image Version 2.95.652.5

To: Image Version 1.13.652.2

Obviously this is a downgrade, is that possible or do I have to find an updated RUU?

I don't seem to have a custom recovery installed, so I can't manullay flash the zip from the RUU... what steps should I take to get this back to fully stock?

Thanks!

edit:

Just ran the RUU again and it tries to run but then finishes with:

Error [140] BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR

edit 2:

Okay, so I re-unlocked my bootloader, flashed a recovery that works and then flashed a file I found called "SetMainVerionLOW.zip" that changed image version to 1.0.000.0. Ran the RUU again and it had slightly different results, but still ended up not working.

Now I believe it says my Hboot is the wrong version.

For now I'm giving up and restoring my Titanium Backup, but I'd still love any help.

Basically what I'm trying to do is go back to a completely stock phone. The reason is that I'm nto getting voicemail notifications and have tried a number of things with Virgin Mobile support. Now they want me to restore the phone and see if that helps.

Unfortunately since you took the latest OTA update you cannot run the RUU. Without doing the wire trick and being s-off, you cannot downgrade your hboot as part of the security checks being done by the RUU.

For Virgin Mobile Evo V, there is only one RUU available, so unfortunately you won't be able to find a newer version :(

The best you can do is flash a stock based rom to get as close to stock as possible, or as stefen so briefly mentioned, you can get s-off on your device. More info here: http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/695161-s-off-root-fix-everything-all-in-one.html

No. You can not use Factory Reset unless you have the stock recovery, will cause semi-brick

Flash Harmonia, Butterz Sense, or Negamanns Stock Odex/Deodexed. Using 4ext with Smart Flash as you are S-On. Once you achieve S-Off you can do virtually anything you want, like RUU, change hboot/radios/flash JB roms, Flash roms without Smart Flash feature [with S-On it has issues flashing boot properly sometimes]

Hmm, okay. So I have my bootloader unlocked... can I flash a stock recovery and then do the system restore? If so, what are the steps to take.

Right now I have the bootloader unlocked, and a stock ROM that's rooted. I want to go back to fully unrooted, stock ROM.

Dont worry about system/factory restore. Forget it existed.

You never made a nandroid backup of your original factory stock rom before you rooted/flashed another rom?

S-off shouldn't take more than a couple hours [alot quicker if everything works right the first time] and then you're free to run the RUU to go factory stock, run OTA updates, turn S back on, lock bootloader, etc etc whatever.

Any particular reason you want completely stock unrooted? HTC doesnt care and if you sell it, that could be a selling point that its pre-rooted and unlocked

See, the thing is tho, I'm having issues with my voicemail.

I had an Evo V, it was working great, then the headset jack died. I got a replacement through the warranty and now the new phone doesn't get voicemail notifications. I can dial in and check them manually, but it's a pain not just getting a notification.

I've talked to support a number of times and they've "reset" my voicemail, whatever that means. Nothing has worked.

So now I'm trying to do a system restore to see if it's something that's messed up on the software side of things (although I doubt it) before I ask for yet another replacement... although at this point my warranty may be nearly up if it's not already.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you ened to root before you can do a nandroid backup?

And yeah, I'm going to do the wire trick at some point, I'm just a bit frustrated right now to try it. I'm more or less looking for info at the moment.

that would be software for sure, flash Harmonia, update Profile and PRL, reboot, open VVM app and let it provision. Also look up the steps for manually provisioning the VVM app by sending a short test voicemail to the activation servers, i forget the email addy for it. App management and clear data for the VVM app before u do anything to start fresh-ish

You don't need root to flash a recovery, after which you do a nand before rooting and or flashing anything else :)

I cant think of any reason root would mess with that, Flash Harmonia and try VVM out :)

Okay, thanks a ton... I'll do the wire trick tomorrow or some other time when I'm not burnt out.

I love tinkering with my devices, but it frustrates the crap out of me when things don't go smoothly. :)

edit:

Any reason why you suggest Harmonia over anything else?

edit2:

I just noticed the Harmonia link says I don't need S-Off... should I do it anyway? I didn't have any trouble doing it with my first phone, so it's not a big deal. Just wondering. Thanks!

Harmonia is basically stock tweaked rom. Everything works basically. Like phone profile prl updates etc. I would flash that and try to get VVM working before running the RUU. Do the wire trick when you get time anyway, it just provides a better experience without limitations

Awesome, that sounds right up my alley. I'll give it a shot today if I get the time.

Thanks again!
