Rooting Incredible = boot screen lock?

Hey guys,

Do we know yet whether rooting the incredible will result in the permanent modification to the boot screen like the nexus one(the little lock under the nexus boot logo)? I would really like to root my incredible (once I get it), but I'd rather not void my warranty so early into owning the phone.

I know there isn't a method to root it yet, but I'm just trying to plan ahead. Now that I think about it, maybe the desire will give us a clue of how the rooting process will go?

once you root the phone any sort of warranty you had goes out the window.. if you brick it you bought it type deal.

You void your warranty when you root. Of course, if you ever have a problem with your phone, they will only be able to tell if its rooted if it works (Not advocating fraud). The boot screen will change, however, I believe some people have made modified boot-up animations to cover it. The guys over at ANDROID | xda-developers have made some pretty cool looking boot ups.

I don't want to be a buzz kill but the Droid Eris is basically the same setup as the Incredible and it was extremely difficult to get root for the device. We waited a very long time. So just wanted to let you know before you get too excited. HTC really locks down devices with Sense on them. Who knows if they patched the exploits with this device before launching it.

I don't think they had the time to get it patched, they had to make 250,000 units for launch so chances are they've been stockpiling them for months. However that doesn't mean it will be rooted anytime soon. It may take another leaked update before we are even able to get a crack at it, which probably won't be for months.

Thanks for the input guys. I just know when I had a droid for a few days, I was able to root it and there was no way the techs could tell once I put the stock rom back on it. I was hoping this might be true of the Incredible. I know that I wasn't willing to root my nexus one (only had for a few days as well) b/c I'm not willing to give up my warranty.

I think it's stupid that they won't even repair obvious hardware defects if you root your phone.

Anyways, I'm coming from an iPhone that I've had jailbroken since day 1, so I'm accustomed to being able to take it back to stock w/o anyone knowing the difference.

If you're going to root your phone it's a good idea to have insurance IMO, if you mess it up beyond repair. Say you lost it pay your deductible and there ya go.

And before someone says anything I dont' feel this is wrong, whats the diffrence between accidently droping your phone in a urinal and peeing on your phone and bricking it. Both are your fault but whatever lol

Not a bad idea. If it really is bricked, I can just say it won't turn on and they'll send me a new(refurb) model. Although, if it really is bricked (which I doubt will happen) they won't be able to tell it was rooted in the first place.

$6 or $8/month is pretty pricey + the deductible.

Accidentally is the difference.

I'm not taking a side on right or wrong here, but the difference between deliberately taking actions that are expressly forbidden and having a momentary dexterity failure isn't exactly a difficult one to discern.

I'm having a tough time deciding on the protection plan too. $72/yr + $90 deductible is pretty steep.

On the other hand, it will seem awfully cheap compared to $530 if you drop the thing in the toilet after 2 months.

You could, just get insurance on it. If you mess it up just bounce it off the floor or drop it in sum water pay the 80.oo deductible get new phone.

Main reasons I would root are for the ability to overclock and usb tethering (G1). For Inc, no need to overclock and USB tethering is built-in (if not, pdanet will do), so I will not worry about rooting Inc for a while.

The other reason would be for app space, but if Inc has over 700 megs free for apps, that will cover me for a long time

The only downside is my wife works for vzw and told me they are trying to do away with pdanet usage for internet and making u pay thier fee for tetherable internet due to breech of contract or some crap like that. In that case u will want to root it.

I'm starting to think maybe I should get insurance. I am not very accident prone and I had an iPhone with t-mobile for almost 4 years never broke it- dropped a few times etc...

Now that I'm going legit - DI with Verizon - Something tells me I'm gonna drop it in a cup of water or something and ruin it... Is the insurance worth it or is it a gimmick to make money off us?
