Root HELP! is customry, but now it's HARK! Born to me this date A PHONE OF ROYAL BEARING!

My phone: HTC Evo V, me: Newbie-Intermediate
___________________________________________

Okay, I worked my way through the "Fix-Everything-All-In-One" guide in the sticky thread. Step-by-step, wire trick worked 3rd try, erased the partitions (except SD card). HBOOT updated 1.50.5050, Radio was correct.

All was well until I reboot, and WHOA! 4EXT can't mount the SD card. Over and over. The card has been very slightly finicky from time to time, but nothing like this. Almost downloaded an alternative to 4EXT to try, but I remembered "DON'T ALTER THE PLAN" and decided to ask for some expert advice here.

DON'T ALTER THE PLAN.
And if he alters it?
I DON'T WANT NEUTRAL I WANT DEAD.

Should I take the SD card out and confirm its contents elsewhere before I do anything else?

Hey you should backup your SD card then format it. Or it's might be corrupt. That's my guess.

Thanks ... you're right, something is wrong. Two phones call the card "Corrupt," and a tablet says it's empty ... bad news either way. What a coincidence it croaks just as I'm doing all this.

Okay now: What all do I put on the SD card before I try again? Just a ROM and zip enough?

I love the look of that MiRaGe ROM, is it made for 4.0? Maybe I should stick with Harmonium for now...

Yeah I would definitely start with Harmonia, being mostly stock it's a great place to start. I've never seen anyone who bricked their phone getting s-offed but unfortunately a corrupt SD card is a known occurrence if you get the timing wrong. Hopefully you can just reformat and be good to go. :D
OB

Thanks for the info. And also, I'm getting set to use a tablet to load the new SD card with the requisite files, than plan to insert it into the Evo to flash.

My questions are:

1) Will that work?
2) what all files do I need on the SD card?
1. Harmonia_3.16_Evo_V.zip.md5
2. A Zip extractor (name of best one?)
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?

Salamat, dank, terimah kasih, grazie, thanks again.

You only need the Rom in question if you wanna flash it. No Gapps etc, no need for a zip tool(WinRar&7Zip) unless you want to mod the rom. For a failsafe I would just go pick up a 16gb mSD and use that. I always keep 2 working roms + recovery stashed on mine for those "Ohhh $h1t" moments. Just remember to do a nandroid before you wipe so you can keep your stock rom.

Okay, new problem.

Quite honestly, I am the least likely to fall victim to paranoid thoughts of any kind, but ... things seem to be shifting in strange ways to block completion of this (some happened prior to this thread).

Past couple days I've rolled through right into 4EXT, all the GREEN circles and underlines below, right thru bootloader until 4EXT said "Can't mount SD card", (RED circle).

20-25 times the last couple days it rolled right up to there, exclusively - every.single.time.

Today I copy Harmonia onto a functional SD card, and I think I'm set to roll, but .....

Now all of a sudden I get only the Splash screen (below) ... and all of a sudden the CMD screen says "Waiting on Device" minute after minute. First time it's said that ... for more than a couple seconds anyway.

I cycle the battery out and back, start with Up Volume+On-Off, nothing but the splash screen, and waiting on device.

I know the computer sees the device because I get the XP "Da-dink!" when it plugs in.

WTF is going on ... anybody?

Have you gotten into your bootloader? Hold the volume down button and just tap the power button, should take you to the bootloader, use your volume key to scroll down to recovery and select with the power key. If that's successful just choose to wipe all partitions but sd card, back out and select install from zip and navigate to your rom and flash it. :D
OB
Edit: make sure that you don't have the usb cable attached while doing the above!

GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS .....

The Good News is that with concerted effort, I was able to correct:

  1. Push the Volume DOWN button, not up
  2. Disconnect the USB cord while tasking ...:(
  3. Add Harmonia.zip to harmonia.zip.md5 ..... :hmmmm:
  4. Format and partition the card IN the phone ...:vollkommenauf:

And the result? ..................

At long last ... Harmonia
Born of a goddess and me.
I name you
George Evoander Virginus....

And all of you guys are aunts and uncles.
With all due thanks and respect of course to Ms. Leslie Anne

The BAD NEWS?

See the RED 10 in the upper right corner?
That's the early verdict on a gold 2450 maH battery after just
three hours. I got in the mail literally today. I'll cycle it a few
times, but this first outing was disappointing to say the least.

NOW: About that great looking MiRaGe ROM ..... sounds to me ROMS are fairly
easily inetrchangeable. Somebody wanna correct me before I  again?

Did you get a fraudy Chinese battery, or were you just using your phone for 2 hours straight? A few charging cycles should fix that!

Just putting it out there that unless you have an extended battery, the oem battery (the one you get with the phone) will likely give your phone 2-3 hours screen on time. So use it sparingky if you want it to last longer than a day.

I left my evo on for 1 month straight and never woke it up and the phone lasted for about a whole month! That was the ultimate wake lock test!:)

Those gold batteries from eBay are complete garbage. I use this extended battery. (Not sure if I'm allowed to link to Amazon, but I'm going to do it anyway. lol If the link gets removed, do a search for "Evo 3d extended battery" and there are plenty that are good AND cheap - I paid $5 for mine)

If you go the extended battery route, I'd recommend getting a nice case. Seidio makes a monster case with 4 different layers lol. It's huge, but your phone is pretty much damage proof. Worth it in my opinion.

As for ROMs, I'd really recommend Angry Bean... Everything works except 3D (and possibly 4g, but I don't live in a 4g area so I don't really know for sure)... I listen to a lot of music and having the apps from Jellybean is really nice (DSP Manager is my favorite.)

Glad you finally got sorted out. Welcome to the world of rooted/s-offed fun.
