Help battery drain?

Coming from many years on iphone, I wanted a larger screen, and so far like it very much..however my battery has come fromm 100-42% in 4 hours today..haven't been on that much...I installed juice defender but seems like I should have more battery life..any suggestions?

I've moved you thread over to the AT&T S4 forum....they should be able to give you a hand there.

Hello barbz. Welcome to the forums. :)

The classic battery hogs in Android are auto syncing of various widgets and apps such as Gmail/email, Facebook and other social networking sites, weather and news, etc. I have mine all set to sync on demand, manually.. saves a lot of battery over the day.

Other things that impact resources are the location features such as the "standalone gps" and the carrier's location services, which you'll find in the main settings menu. Constant polling for location towers etc does drain the battery. It's best to use those only when needing directions or nearby services etc.

that doesnt sound right...you should get a lot better battery life...a couple things I can think of is
1.Did you let the phone fully charge until the led light turned green. Mine says 100% and light still doesnt turn on..Also don't let the battery fully discharge to zero..lithium ion batteries hate it...it is perfectly ok to charge a lithium battery when ever you need to. Just don't let them fully discharge.

2.If you are not using wifi..make sure it is turned off...It will keep looking for a signal when it can not find one.

3.What is your signal like...if you have poor signal and it keeps going in and out that will kill your battery fast...I just bough a s4 three days ago...while i am home my phone lasts like 20hrs..and i use it pretty good. I left work and my phone was at 42% its been 12 hours and im at 26%. I get 4g where ever I go but when I'm at work the building must block it and my phone goes in and out between 1x and 3g and my battery won't last 6 or 7 hours. One thing that I found that helps is that I go into settings->connections->more networks->Mobile Networks->Network mode->and I choose CDMA and shut off LTE. This stops the phone from looking for 4g signal and conserves the battery.

4.How are you using the phone...if you're streaming netflix or youtube...see you later battery. Also playing some heavier graphic games will kill your battery or any games that connect over the net.

5.Another thing with the S4's is the S Voice. It's their version of Siri. I can't remember if it is turned on or not but S Voice you can set a wake up command...So when your phone is at the lock screen you can say Hi Galaxy or any phrase you want and it goes into S Voice...well this keeps the mic running and uses more battery...it even says it in the app settings that it will..So go into S Voice->Menu button->Settings->Wake on Command...make sure that is turned off.

6. Shut off gps if you arent using it...Especially if you are indoors alot..gps tends to loose signal easy and if it can't find it it will keep searching.

7. Same thing with bluetooth...if you arent using it don't keep it on

8. These screens are super bright...well that means more power...the lower the brightness the longer the battery life..I keep mine around 25% the only time I go up is in direct sunlight.

9. There is a power saving mode in the notifications bar..I haven't used it but you could try it...

10. I keep s beam and nfc off..I don't know if these run all the time when they are on but I have no need for them yet so I keep them off. They are radios and radios tend to look for a signal all the time so they can connect instantly.

11. Turn syncing off.. Turn it on once a day for like 20 minutes is enough..Again it keeps the radios's from sleeping. The more data you have to send the battery you use. I know its not alot of data but it all adds up..

12. Use Airplane mode at night if you can...or shut your phone off..I use an alarm clock on my phone but there is nobody that needs to get ahold of me at night so I put my phone in airplane mode...It shuts off all the radios but you can still use apps that dont need data. My old phone would go two weeks on battery in airplane mode. I'm not bs'ing either I went somewhere that didn't have my cell phone carrier for two weeks and never charged my phone once.

Thats all I can think of now...these are what I do and I get decent life..I am a moderatly heavy user...I just got my phone on friday and I already used a 1gb of data...and I have wifi at home. The biggest things that I have found that kill battery are the radios...Cell radio..wifi...bluetooth...nfc/sbeam, I think are radios...shut them off when ever they are not in use or can not find a solid signal...if your phone is going in and out of 4g to 3g alot try and shut off 4g. It seems to make a big diffrenece on my phone. Ill try and add more if I think of it and good luck

There are (almost) always things you can do to save battery, but the usage you're seeing isn't normal. Go to Settings/More/Battery to see what programs are sucking up all the power. If it's some stray program or widget, you'll know.

The one setting you should verify though is screen auto-brightness. The large screen will use a lot of power, and the brighter it is the more power it will use.

well I turned everything off/down and in 14 minutes since charge it is down to 97% and all I used the phone for was to change settings!!

Im not really sure any more...here is what my phone sits at..

40% screen 21% device idle 17% google services 11% android os 7% cell stand by 4% wifi 2% media server 2% android system...

your screen seems to be sucking down most of the power....what is your screen timeout set at I keep mine at 30 secs maybe yours stays on to long..

I dont think you should get discouraged at the phone yet...these have huge batterys and they last...either you have a dead battery from the start...it happens..most electronics company's do let defects go through because it is cheaper to let defects go through and then get returned through the store than to stop production to remove one item..I would fight for a new battery...but see what is going on with your phone...it seems that your screen is staying on. 76% is very high usage..also this phone has air gesture...One of the settings of air gesture is when you phone is set flat and you wave your hand over it...it shows you if the time...if you have missed calls or notifications.. it also turns your screen on...try tilting your phone alittle...maybe that is turning on constantly and you dont realize it...it only does it when its perfectly flat...it wont do it in your pocket...but it does seem like your screen is on an awful long time.

also if you do get another battery by yourself...be careful of amazon or ebay make sure to spend the money and buy a battery from samsung...many of the batteries from amazon and ebay are 2nds...these are the batteries that didnt make it through and they get sold at a discounted price. thats why they go cheap on amazon....they are samsung made batteries but they didnt pass for some reason...Sometimes you do get a good one and other times they just suck.

i have almost everything turned off, my screen is also at 30 sec. the att man did say they had this one a long time maybe it is the battery, I didn't get this phone to have and turn everything off! I like it but am I supposed to "kill" apps all the time and such? I didn't have to do that with the iphone, that is a royal pain in the butt, lol

you shouldnt have to kill everything...it seems like there is something wrong...either maybe you have a bad battery or there is an app running that you dont know about that is sucking down your battery...i cant tell you because I have us cellular and I dont know what att has for bloatware..when you have your screen turned off is it true off or does it look like the screen is kind of on a little bit??

i will charge it tonight. its at 75% since 7pm tonight, isn't that ridiculous? i will charge it from now till i wake up at 7 am and use it like i did my iphone if it's not better i will go to att at noon and see what they say
Hi, you are correct that is not how the phone should be.

I keep many settings off, not for battery but because I like to have things at my control. the phone does not try to connect to google or anyone else unless Im actively doing so:p

The screen size alone is a battery hog but with the larger battery in that phone it should NOT be draining that fast. I have 2 phones here right now, one is the S3 with almost the same size screen and one is the Nexus 4 again with almost the same size screen and the battery lasts 18+ hours with 40% or more left.

So I would say take it to the store have them check if the phone or battery are defective. See if you can find a guy that knows how to check/change settings that are constantly causing the phone to "wakeup" once those checks are done/fixed your phone should work very well and you dont have to have everything turned off.

you don't have to kill apps. Try a factory reset and start over. Next step is to call support. If they can't help they'll probably send you a new phone (at least ask).

well please let us know....also try maybe a third party battery percentage app...battery capacity's can be calibrated....the first day I got my phone and when it charged to "100%" the led light stayed red...I left it on for another hour before the led light showed green....my old lg motion sat a 0% for about 4 hours before it died...its nice when you can use recoveries that you can wipe battery stats with but you can't do that with the stock rom..have you tried letting your phone last till it dies...its not the best for lithium batteries but once wont hurt...and if you battery is no good any way it wont matter

Charge it up all the way and let it stay on battery a couple hours. In the meantime, I would recommend downloding "Wakelock Detector". Once your phone has been running on battery for a while start the Wakelock detector app and select the setting from the top right called "CPU wakelocks"

My phone gets great battery life after some tweaks and have found that you will need to pinpoint the exact issue that's keeping your phone awake. I'm assuming your phone is never going to sleep.

I'm pretty sure it goes to "sleep". the screen is always going dark, after the 30 sec. and I'm not hitting the home button, it sits on my desk...I have decided to use it today like I did my iphone and if the battery is poor again, I will go to att tomorrrow. I like the phone and wanted it for the bigger screen and camera, but don't want to have to always 'clear' cache and stop apps running, that is a pain in the butt.
