I'm coming from a BB Storm (this is a VERY welcome, VERY overdue upgrade). BB has a series of sound profiles where I can have silent( no vibrate), vibrate, loud, medium, etc, etc. Its very customizable in that regard.

Does android offer the same features, or just normal and vibrate?

I'm struggling with this as well. It can't be that we are the first to miss this functionality from the BB. Surely someone has solved this.

Hey. I had the same question at first with my Moto Droid. Go to the Android Market and dowload Quick Profiles. It is fully customizable. I created four profiles: normal (everything makes noise), phone only, silent, vibrate. However to ensure you dont even get a vibrating notification for the phone only, be sure to set the ringer to ring only in the app's settings if it is on ring and vibe you will get vibe notifications for email etc.

I think I'm learning how to explain what I need. I need the Notifications Sounds SPLIT. I need SMS/MMS to make noise while Google Talk, Gmail, Other Email and Calendar and other apps don't. TO accomplish that now I need to go into every app and turn off the notification sounds. Is there a program that will centralize what uses the notifications?

I've figured out how to have Phone only but work uses SMS for On Call paging and I need that sounds loud 24 hours a day but at the same time to not want to hear a Google Talk message at 2am. :)

Just to follow up . . .

Coming from a BB Curve I've tried:

Profiles
Quick Profiles
Toggle Profiles
Locale

and maybe a few others.

My assesment is Toggle Settings is the best Free Profile Management App available (for my needs YMMV) and Locale is the best pay for app. I bought Locale and am using it and Toggle Settings. I had a few requirements that Phone and SMS make noise while all else is quiet and I was able to accomplish that with locale and a Plug In.

I've setup Toggle Settings on my wife's DI and I customized the profiles and setup rules to change the profiles for her. It's been working great and is easy to use.

PS: Going to check out aRing now.

Toggle Settings you go into the settings optoin and turn on the profiles tab. Then go into modify the profiles (at the bottom of the settings). I preferred to setup my own profiles so I unchecked all of them and renamed the first 4 to meet my needs.

The setting to make only ring work is to hit menu and add a setting and then go to the bottom and add Volume Control. Turn the Notification Volume all the way down while leaving the Ringer volume up.

Although this may be close to what us ex-bb users are used to, I have yet to find an app that allows for a separate customization for sms and email notifications...is this possible with the mentioned app??

Ughhhh, this is one of my biggest CONS about this phone!! And most, if not all, of these 3rd party applications, bulk SMS and EMAIL as "NOTIFICATIONS" so there is no way to separate them...Meaning, like me at night, I want to turn on Ringer and SMS, but silence EMAILS and everything is. BUT, i can't bc these apps bulk the SMS/MMS and email notifications TOGETHER!! A royal PITA!!

Izzy you need Locale. It is what I use to do exactly what you want to do. Still a work around with some cons (Emails and things you want silenced have to be the "default sound") and it is a $10 app. That said I have paid for it and it is an awesome app. I use it to manage all my sound profiles and I have SMS Text and Phone calls only at night with no Gtalk, Email or Facebook sounds at night. If you decide to buy locale and want more details on how to set this up just let me know (I think I may have written this somewhere else if you search my posts.

If you want only SMS and Phone at night (above post) cant you just keep your sound settings normal, but just shut off auto synch for your email?
Could I?? YES. Should I HAVE to?? NO.. They shouldn't be bulked together. The same way we can go into each and choose nice ringers, volumes, etc, I should be able to turn them off or on, individually, in a profile.

Will definitely look into this and will probably DEFINITELY need ure help bc it already sounds confusing!! LOL :D I actually saw Locale when I was looking into fixing this problem but wasn't sure if I wanted it bc I don't want it to "automatically" go into certain profiles depending on my location or time of day. Can I do everything manually??

Anytime. You'll need a plug in for Locale but it is free (Locale Sound Notify). Lots of the plug ins are free so grab em all.

I don't think the Android software is made for anyone who has had a smartphone before. It's like a kid's version of a smartphone, even more than the iPhone. All these apps are fun to play with and sometimes helpful, but the software really sucks compared to any real smartphone. Without adding in a single app, any blackberry can do things that the android can't do under any conditions. You can't reverse that statement.

I just bought the HTC Evo because I wasn't satisfied with my 3rd blackberry. I've had a blackberry curve (the workhorse) the Storm (misunderstood) and the Tour (POS). All of them have the best setup for multiple forms of communication and they can all run at the same time. The best thing is that most of them are on the phone or linked to be setup very easily. I would rather have an original blackberry storm than this Evo. At least I wouldn't have to settle for one email address actually being delivered to my phone because it happens to be the same brand as the company who provides the OS. Blackberry has their own email addresses, but they don't make you use theirs as the primary.

Please, someone convince HTC to make a deal with Blackberry. The Evo has great hardware, but it would be soooooo much better with a real smartphone OS.
