I have had my galaxy s4 for about a month now. Is there a way for me to transfer music and videos from my phone to my pc without having to take my otterbox defender case off every time, just so i can access the mini SD card, and manually plug it into the PC to transfer files?

I had an LG esteem android phone and it was very user friendly, i pluged in the phone via usb to my pc and just dragged and dropped files at will. S4 does not let me do that.

Yes i downloaded the newest samsung drivers, yes i updated that useless kies software that never recognizes the s4. Why is this such a hasle? the s4 is the first android that is not letting me simply transfer my files. Very annoying.

Could try a wireless transfer app. like AirDroid.

I've had no problems transferring files, music, pictures, etc. between our PC and my SGS4. (I use the drag and drop method.) The only thing that I noticed is that the PC saw my phone as a media storage device and not a USB drive. I used the supplied data cable. I have an Outterbox Commuter case and only have to flip down the USB port cover to access the port.

when i connect my phone to pc (windows xp) i get two folders (android card and android phone) im assuming that represents the sd card and the internal storage

the problem is that when you double click to access the folders, you see sub folders within but they all have the unrecognizable icon which looks like this

Unrecognizable%20File%20icon.bmp

now i do however know that i can swipe down on the notifications bar at the top of the home screen and switch the usb connection mode to camera PTP, but even then i have to use the microsoft scanner and camera wizard to view and move the photos ... and of course it only shows photos... not any other media files

THIS IS A HUGE FUMBLE IF YOU CAN NOT ACCESS ATLEAST YOUR SD CARD BY SIMPLY PLUGGING YOUR PHONE INTO THE PC VIA USB. All the features these phones claim to have but you cant simply access you sd card and or internal memory from a pc?? i seriously hope this is a misunderstanding.

When I connect my S4 to my Win7 laptop, it installs some drivers and then shows up as a "portable device" with two folders - Card and Phone. I can drill down in both folders and see all files. So it definitely can do it - maybe you have to find drivers for WinXP. Keep posting what you see, someone will come up with a fix.

I would suggest using the My Files program to explore your phone and make sure those folders you're seeing actually have files in them. Then when you find a folder with files, see what you can see using XP.

I would also suggest getting a Dropbox account so that you can automatically have your pictures uploaded to your PC.

I use Windows XP as well and have no problems accessing any files on internal or SD card storage. I do believe some drivers where installed on my computer the first time I hooked it up. So, ya, it can do it. The other thing is, since it not registering as a USB storage device, you don't have to mount/unmount your phone. (Seems weird though.)

I use ES File Explorer on the GS4. I open up the Network\LAN page and copy and paste to my Win7 computer as desired over my wireless network. Works great!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop

I use ES File Explorer too, works for pulling files from the PC too. And with the VPN in my router I can do this while away from home also. I think I can connect it to my VPS via a SFTP connection, but not tested that. Though it would would be like my own personal 100Mbps up/down cloud.

What should I use to transfer stuff from my SG4 to my MacBook Pro?

Mac being build on unix supports SFTP just like my Linux Virtual Private Server, so ES File Explorer works here too. I just tested with my older iBook G4 and as long as both are on same WiFi network I can connect and upload/download just as I do my PC from my phone.

One caveat with ES File Explorer that I found.. and this probably has more to do with Android/GS4 than the app... but I cannot find a way to copy and paste from the screenshot folder on the device. The only way I've found to move screenshots (which apparently can't be directed to the SD card for storage) is to link them to a text or email and send them that way.

My Android experience only consists of the Droid 3 and now this S4. With the D3, both my phone and the external microSDHC card I had in it showed up as external drives on my Windows 7 computer. But the S4 shows up as an SCH-I545 drive and then that consists of Phone and Card. So I guess it's still showing as an external drive, but not a lettered drive.
