Root How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More

I don't think Nandroid backs up the radio so you might want to remove this or at least put a disclaimer. As it stands it sounds like you can restore the original radio from Nandriod which I don't think you can.

Could you add that this only effects MS Windows systems? Otherwise people using other systems will do this and end up with 'update' rather than 'update.zip'.

Otherwise great guide!

In regards to nandroid / radio the only time it will revert back to the orignal radio would be when you have first taken a backup of the phone (before installing a custom rom) and then you install a custom ROM and newer version of the radio... and then if something goes wrong you restore your phone...(as you are using a backup which had the phones original stuff)..

Otherwise most people will have nandroid backups that have the newest radio because they are using there new backup which they take after installing the custom ROM.

I have written a very long winded post about this here.. does it make sense? Are there any ways to make it clearer. It is difficult to word as it depends on the persons ituation. I.e. which backup they have as there latest...

But again a valid point and one which I need to stick in somewhere.

Also.. I have added a note about your 2nd point.

Sorry to be a pain, but the instant root didn't work for me, is there a walk through guide to help me get my phone rooted as tbh i'm sick of waiting for the official update to come out.

Try the following again:-

2. Copy the Amon Ra recovery image to the root of sdcard ( not in any folder )

3. Copy flashrec to the root of your sdcard (Use 1.1.3 .. if that fails try 1.1.2)

4. Install flashrec (Use a file explorer like astro)

5. Open flashrec. Then, Back up your recovery on first screen then in address bar put /sdcard/(ur amonra recoveryname with .img) and press flash. Typically it will be like this
/sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img

Your done! Switch off the phone, switch it back on holding home key & power key

You should see a new recovery menu and at the bottom it will say Amon Ra 1.6.2 .. when this is done follow these instructions (steps 7-9) or post back here.

========================================================================

If that fails try this:

1) Go to the market and install an app called Terminal emulator.
2) Make sure recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img is on your SD card. Not in any folders, but the root of your card.

3) Open the Terminal app and type in the following commands. (enter) means press the enter button lol. :D.. please not the SPACES. This is important.

su (enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.6.2.img(enter)
reboot recovery (enter)

See if that works. I did it yesterday as I updated from 1.5.2 to 1.6.2 and it did not says 'successful' or anything so to see if it works power off your phone. Turn it on holding the power and home button.

You should see a new recovery menu and at the bottom it will say Amon Ra 1.6.2 .. when this is done follow these instructions (steps 7-9) or post back here.

You must be doing something wrong because you have the 2.73.405.5 ROM so it will let you use instant root etc.

Why it is not working I do not know.

Can you give me the exact details that pop up etc.

Please be more detailed because I need to rely on the information you give me in order to build a picture of what's going on.

Right now I am going in blind and I cannot advise you any further.

Try reading this. May be the instructions are more clear.

If the phone still can't be rooted after following the instructions (please try to do it at least twice) then at the top of the page there are other alternatives if the main one fails.

You need to "check" the "USB de-bugging" setting in the phone;

HOME > MENU > Settings > Applications > Development needs to be selected for the phone to be able to synchronize with the PC using HTC Sync.

try that

OR

Open HTCSync on PC
Connect handset to USB cable
When "HTCSync" notification appears in the top bar, pull it down and select it
(DO NOT select "USB Connected" - this will mount your SD card on the PC)
After a short time HTCSync and handset connect and sync options are available.

OR

remove-and-replace-the-battery .. restart phone lol

For me neither. Try 'Better Terminal', it works great or use 'ConnectBot' set to local.

Now i could be totally insane, but i've just used ConnectBot (set to local) typed in root as username & got a $ prompt. then @ $ prompt i typed su & got a #. Am i getting all excited over nothing or do i have root access?

I think somethings been missed, I just checked that thread & someone mentioned Busybox not working. I clicked on Problem, downloaded busybox & it now appears Titanium backup sees my phone as being rooted.
What i'll do is start from scratch, (so i've not missed anything, last thing i wanna do is brick this phone). Then i'll report back if i have any further issues.

Thanks :)

Right, got a Great BIG warning screen.

WARNING

Busybox works but the "su" command does not elevate to root: "whoami" reports "whoami: unknown uid 10047" instead of root/uid 0. I think your "Superuser Whitelist" system app does not work. Please check with your ROM provider.

Dunno as I've never tried gaining SU permissions with a non-rooted phone :D but I would imagine you would get a 'permission denied' or something along those lines.

When you installed the app with Astro did it say that you had gained root access? or that it installed without any issues?
