Upgrade to GSM? Lose your old plan

When you upgrade to a new GSM phone, they will make you change to a current plan. I have a Motion and am grandfathered in to the $55/month plan. I bought the F3, but if I want to upgrade my phone, they'll force me on the $60 plan. I decided not to upgrade just yet. I figured this needed it's own thread so people won't make the same mistake.

Your best bet is to go to another dealer. They are trying to make money into the scam of changing your account. These dealers. Dont let that happen. On a old 3G plan going to 4G then yes you will need a new plan. A 4G plan to GSM with BYOD I have customers that have their same plan.

Now metro corp is backing the notion that you have to upgrade

its not so much of a scam as it is just business, they have servers filled with customers data. with the merger they can start to offload some of them to mtobile, but only customers who are on current plans. so all teh people who hold out or try to get switched over are causing metro to have to keep them in the system as a stubborn SOB limiting progress towards the merger.

they arent saying you have to pay more you can get a cheaper plan if you wanted to. you guys have had massive plan security with all this going on, many other companies have abruptly changed their terms of service and plans while customers were still on them.

I call "BS"! Unless the dealer/rep did something that cannot be discussed in these forums, there's no way to legally switch a customer from CDMA to GSM/BYOD without changing their service plan!

We dealers cannot choose whether GSM & BYOD customers get to "have their same plan." Since the platform is known of each device in Metro's own inventory, the system automatically defaults to a menu of plans compatible with the device's platform. And, since every BYO device is GSM, the system will only offer the GSM menu of plans for BYOD customers.

Even if a customer were to beg, bribe, or threaten me, I could not possibly upgrade them from a CDMA device into a GSM/BYOD device, without changing their no-longer-available, grandfathered promo plan.

When I switched over from admire 3g to lg spirit 4g my plan didn't change it stayed the same.

$5 isnt so bad, but my plan, grandfathered $40 true un throttled 4G I would pay $20 more per month $240 more per year.
I just switched to the CDMA S3 and my wife will stay on that plan until they turn the lights off. At which point there will either be a new promo to get on gsm. or another MNVO will have LTE and cheaper pricing.

You think they would have a promo like that? I know metro did alot before but under tmo...i dont know...
At some point they will do everything they can to switch people off cdma. so will they let me keep, or more likely offer a new $40 promo for unlimited un throttled? Maybe not but they will offer something and if its worth taking up Then I switch if not. Well 20 or so months brings alot of changes Straight Talk, or another will likely have tmo lte by then. I could go with $45 per month as I said $5 isn't that bad.

Yes, Like I said we can ride out the CDMA till the end, and along the way check out the options. I am not too unhappy about it as the S3 is still a nice phone and while I can't stand white phones (dont really know what it is just dont) it now has a case on it and the specs are decent it works much better then the esteem ever did. While development on it is not nearly as much as gsm variants there still are people working it.
And when my wife finally gets into it she will be happy with it til its no longer usable. And when it is time to jump ship she will be unhappy. She gets attached which is the number 1 reason I wanted to go GSM so she could keep the device for 3+ years if she wanted.
