Camera usage under low battery

Surely I should be able to continue using the camera at that level of battery?

You could, but it's likely a limitation to prevent the risk of lost images; if the current drops too much the CMOS sensor may behave erratically.

Can't find any powere saving feature that I can alter to allow the camera to be used at a lower battery level.

Many custom firmwares have this restriction removed, but installing these requires root access. See the All Things Root section for how-to guides and advice.
