Help whats downloading on my galaxy s4?

My galaxy s4 always has 2 download icons on the very top left of the screen. What is this? How do I see whats downloading, and how do I stop them? Also, whats the icon of the lock with a small exclamation beside it. Its not on the list of icons on the phone.

Also, I am switching from an iphone and of course I am used to how it worked still. When I get I new text while the galaxy is locked it alerts me but only says I have a new message but it doesn't tell me who its from. Anyway to adjust that? Is there a way to unlock the phone and have it go to the new message automatically like the iPhone? Those are a couple features I am missing.

As for the lockscreen notif, is your device password locked?

If you use facebook alot the pictures you look at may be donloading. I noticed your issue on my daughter's S2 and asked her what she was downloading? She said nothing but when I checked it was images from facebook. She said she was just looking and never actually tried to download any pictures. If you don't use facebook,, it could be your Play Store app updating apps. By default the Play Store will download app updates whenever your using WiFi. You have to go into settings on the Play Store app to turn that off.

i moved you to the s4 for better eyes with folks who have your device.

i do not have your phone, but can't you pull the notification down to see what exactly is the notification? i can do this on my htc evo 4g lte.

you can get some lockscreen apps that when you unlock the phone you have options on what apps to open upon unlocking. i think WidgetLocker Lockscreen might be something that you might be interested in.

Thanks guys! I didn't know the top icons were notifications! Now why do I have 2 app stores? Does the amazon app store have more to choose from than the play store or visa versa?

Yes. Open the Messaging app. Enter the settings menu via the settings button. Then go down and select "Preview message" under the Notification settings. Once that is selected the name of the sender and a preview of the message will show up in the status bar and notification tray.

This goes for e-mail as well. At least that's the case for Gmail. There is a similar setting where you have to select "Preview message" to get the sender to show up.

I'm not sure about prompting the phone to open the message automatically when you unlock it. I'd be interested to know that myself.

Google play store will have more. Amazon will just offer pretty much the same apps.....did not know that the s4 came with the amazon app. store.

I like the feature when I reach for the phone while its locked it will show me any missed calls or messages but it seems to only work when on a flat surface. I keep the phone on the passenger seat of my work van and when I stop or just want to check the phone it never works. Is this normal or am I missing something?

Also, any good keyboards with auto correct and the numbers on too? I have the jellybean one but I dont want to pay $3 just to have numbers on top of the letters like the stock keyboard.

The lockscreen notifications is based on the accelerometer, meaning it will detect if you moved it and show the notification. Since its on the seat of your van, it may be constantly detecting movement, which is why it doesn't work from there.

For keyboards, Kii is a good free alternative, as well as Perfect Keyboard or Touchpal keyboard. However you won't regret investing in either Swype ($1) or Swiftkey ($3). Well worth it.

Yes you can. Go to settings>accounts>add account>gmail
For notifications, go into the app, then>menu>settings/preferences

The pre-installed Swype is an older version which doesn't get updated. Swype and SwiftKey have trial versions you can use for 2weeks

Unless you are talking about the swiping feature of the keyboard which is different from the layout of the Swype keyboard.

It seems like my wifi connection on this phone is intermittent. It will go from full strength to 1 bar while sitting in the same place. Same seems to go for the 3g/4g connection. it's rarely more than 2 bars anywhere.
