Really $3? I got mine by signing up for a gmail account and requesting one... (several times) google sent me an invite about a month or 2 later to my gmail account... this was only back in January too... started requesting them end of Nov, when I thought Moto Droid was all Verizon was gonna have that was good by now when I was able to upgrade.

not to derail what is an already limited usefulness topic, but I have a question.

When someone sends a text message to your GV number, is it then forwarded via SMS to your phone (thus costing you money/using up texts), or does it use some other technology to get to the phone?

it goes through the google voice app and your data connection... no texting fee

can you explain the third bullet-point under the Texting section of this article? I don't understand.

Google Voice and Verizon - Tips and Tricks

unless I'm mistaken... I believe it's saying if you send a text via your google number from your phone interface then you will incur a usage to your account with your carrier... but if you send through the google voice and site interface(can also do it over the computer), it uses data usage instead.

This may help you

Ok if so, then that's cool. So when someone texts your google number, does google push that to your phone somehow, or does it use a polling method to check for new messages every so often?

Google Voice and Verizon - Tips and Tricks

Hey, I'm the author of this particular article... so hopefully I can offer some help. Are you referring to the "standard text rates apply" bullet point? If my understanding is correct, if you're texting using the Android app, it's considered to be send via internet (thus data). If you send a text using the 406 numbers (using the phone's native text messaging), it'll be considered an out of network text.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. You might also consider moving this question to a new thread...

Cheers!

You can set it up either way. I currently have GV forward texts to my phone because I don't have a smartphone (yet ;) ). It is seen by Verizon as a text. But once I get my Incredible, I'll turn the forwarding function off and then only use the GV app for my texts. Then it will be seen as data by Verizon and, therefore, covered by my unlimited data plan.

Been lurking on this site for a while now and have learned a TON of good information. I wanted to be one of the many who asked for a Google Voice invite but since I have not contributed anything I didn't feel it was right. I took the OPs advice and went the Ebay route to purchase my $3!! (actually $5!!) invite. Well I did the buy it now, sent my PayPal cash and about an hour later received an e-mail from Ebay that my auction was canceled and removed for rules violations. So now out 5 bucks (I know that's not much but hey its 5 bucks) and no Google invite either. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up and to watch out doing the Ebay thing.
