I have a Kyocera Event that is not activated because I mainly got it for MP3 and camera but I am playing with it a lot now.
I found out that I can use Google Maps with it being activated, not just wifi but 3G also. I don't know how but while running thru town and on my way home I could use it to see where I was on the road just like a GPS.
If I tried to search or anything it would say I need a Data Connection for that task but as far seeing what road I'm on and all, it did that.

How is it doing this?

My son has VM and I used his account so I can get apps. Is my phone using his data from his account to run Maps?

Or is it just using 3G for free? I think one of the Kindles has that feature.

The Kyocera Event seems to be a prepaid phone, so is it possible that you have 3G data under a prepaid plan? (If you go somewhere out of WiFi range, could you, for example, visit a web page?)

Google Maps needs a data connection to download map data. However, if you launch it while still under a WiFi connection, it will store a copy of the local map and will continue to work as long as you don't go too far (maybe about a mile or two). It is also possible to deliberately download offline maps for a broader area (but it uses a lot of memory). By the way, if you want a free offline GPS map/navigation application whereby you can store maps for entire states or countries to your SD card, I'd recommend NavFree. There are also several paid apps, like Garmin & Tom Tom.

One phone cannot use another phone's data unless the two phones are in close proximity and one of them is running a WiFi Hotspot (with its 3G/4G data connection), while the other phone connects to the first via WiFi.

If you live in a city like Mountain View, CA and your phone is set up to access the city-wide free WiFi, you might have a (WiFi) data connection wherever you go within that city.

Didn't know a city had wifi thru out it limits, that's a new one on me.
I can have my phone on airplane mode and wifi off and it still works, just tried it. The map was way off from where I am, force stopped Maps and restarted it and hit location and it found where I am. Humm, it might really work off GPS.
