Root Stock Apps Safe to Remove

Looking to streamline my phone and remove anything I am not using. Anyone have a list of apps safe to remove? The closest I've found is a list for the HTC One X over on the xda forum. I've used that one as a guide with pretty good success (so far), but I am wondering about Tasks, Task Manager, Rescue and Rescue Security. A more comprehensive list would be great if anyone has one they've built up that they'd like to contribute.

Also, Titanium Backup detects an app called WiFi HotSpot and the package name is com.HTC.WifiRouter
I already installed an app called WiFi Tether TrevE Mod which works great. Anyone know if it is safe to remove the stock hotspot app?

Welcome to AF. I have hot found a list for your phone but since you are rooted the best thing to do is freeze with titanium backup one app at a time, reboot and run your phone for some time and see if you have any issues. If you get an error unfreeze that app if you don't go to the next app you don't want. I know this takes time but it is the safest route.

Before starting anything make a back up in recovery and do not delete any apps just freeze them.

If you don't mind and want to help the community out could you post a list of the apps that you were able to successfully freeze.

I am also gong tho move this to the root section.

Some of those apps are connected to HTC sense and the wifi router is the wifi tether they have built into the rom.

If you wanted to get rid of bloatware you'd want to remove the add on programs that are connected to Sense but you might just want to freeze them until a desensed rom is made.

ALWAYS AND I DO MEAN ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP WITH TITANIUM BEFORE PERMANENTLY DELETING ANY APP YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT!

The freezing option mentioned is also very good advice. I freeze many of the apps I'm unsure of and run the phone for a good bit just to make sure there are no I'll effects before deleting it. Even when I delete an app I ALWAYS keep the backup.

One app I hate is the Sense launcher (Rosie). I'm used to tapping the menu button and holding the menu button for recent apps. By default the phone is set to tap for recent apps or tap and hold for menu but the second option never worked for me to show the menu. I had to either press the menu button and find Settings or have a home screen shortcut to Settings.

If you hate the Sense launcher as much as I do you can find Launcher.apk or Trebuchet.apk from pretty much any de-Sensed ROM or a CM10 ROM for other phones. Install it then when you tap the home button you'll be prompted for which launcher to use. Select Launcher instead of the HTC one and set the check to remember the setting.

Then you need to move Launcher (or Trebuchet) from a user app to a system app with an app like System Tuner which is free or the paid version of Titanium Backup. Then you can delete Rosie. Reboot into recovery and clear cache and dalvik immediately. Voila. Menu button press shows the stock ICS or JB menu or tap and hold for recent apps.

ETA:
I think you can even grab Launcher2.apk from a JB AVD and it should work but I haven't tried it and it isn't deodexed.

Nice tip did you happen to download Trebuchet and get it to work for this phone?

The one in the app store is a little bigger file size than the one I found. I think I got mine from the experimental Motorola Triumph CM10. I don't know the differences between all of them and what customizations if any but some are smaller than others.
The one on the app store has a couple more features I think but also maybe has some bugs. That's why I stuck with one from a ROM.

I've tried other ways to try and get around having to choose it at start up each time but the only way that works for me is to actually make it a system app. Works for me and I'm happy with it. I've tried quite a few launchers but ADW EX is by far my favorite.

I know when a ROM is released it will maybe have a stock-ish browser that you can change the user agent like I've seen in pretty much all Cyanogen ROMs. Does anybody know what is a good base to start with developing one of these?

A lot of people use a browser like Dolphin to change the user agent but I like the stock browser because it's lightweight, seemlessly syncs my bookmarks, etc.

That being said, it's easy to grab a copy of browser.apk from another JB ROM (4.1.2) but when I install it, the only quirk is the 'find on page' menu item reads something crazy like 'decrease year' 'increase month' or 'click here to learn more about...'
Clicking the item actually does open the find on page but it just really bugs me

I tried decompiling the app and I can find pretty much every menu item in strings.xml except I can't find this mysterious menu text anywhere.

I think you need a deoxed apk and it has to be signed to work with our phone, the browser that comes with it seems pretty basic and stock to me I still have it.

Yep it's deodexed like apps from most all custom ROMs AFAIK...the Cyanogen one I'm using anyway. I hate the HTC browser

The browser I'm grabbing out of the CM10 ROMs works fine after I move it to system, the menu item just annoys me that's all

Lol. I've used Boat Browser in the past but I'm still using Chrome with my SV. It gets the job done.

Gonna be interesting to see what's included in the upcoming custom ROMs.
