Moto Droid Maxx Pre-Release Thread

Not open for further replies.
Everyone has been trying to get their new Maxx at $100 discount through Wirefly and Sams Club but we keep running into the same roadblock; namely if you want to keep your unlimited data you need to transfer your upgrade to another line but they won't let you transfer that phone back to your line until after 181 days without a financial penalty ($400).

If you currently OWN a Motorola phone that is eligible you can safe $100, or rather get $100 off of your new Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra or Droid Mini and yes also your Motorola X. All you have to do is complete the process and 6-8 weeks later you will receive a $100 Visa Gift card.

Unfortunaetly the ONLY Motorola phone we have is the Droid 2. It doesn't qualify.

Check out the link below and see if you can qualify.

Deal alert: $100 off Moto X, Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini with Motorola

I thought I'd never want to give up my unlimited data, but looks like I'm going to. Winds up being a wash for me financially at 5 GB/month (which is more than I use). Way cheaper over a 2 year time span at 2 GB/month, which I might be able to get away with.

I am actually leaning the same way. I was using 5 to 6 GB a month just because I did not care and never used Wi-Fi since 4G is so good around here. We actually have been thinking about moving to the Share Everything plan because for us it does make more sense. I started using Wi-Fi at home and work for the last couple of months and I am down to about 1 GB a month now and my wife is about the same. That gives us plenty of cushion and now with the hotspot feature included we can use our wi-fi iPad on trips for surfing and email while on the road. And if you do have a month you go over it is not a huge penalty.

It just seems like a hassle to try and keep it. I can't justify paying $649 or more for a device when I can get it for $199 through Wirefly. The unlimited is just not worth that much to me.

Interesting that the Razr/Maxx isn't on the TradeUp program. Oh well.

I'm excited about the Droid Maxx, especially since it has most of the features of the Moto X. What concerns me is not reading anything yet about a root method for this phone. I finally rooted my Razr Maxx and backed everything up to SD Card with Titanium Backup. Why I didn't do that years ago is beyond me, lol. But of course now that I've got everything backed up that way, there probably won't be a root method released for the Droid Maxx. Especially since Dan Rosenberg mentioned that when he unlocked the bootloader of the Razr HD early this year, that was his last due to the time/effort involved. I hope he didn't mean rooting, as I don't care about a locked/unlocked bootloader.

Has anyone heard any rumblings about a potential root method for this phone?

While it's not the Maxx, it is the Ultra. It's good to see an unboxing with this line of phones. Hopefully one for the Maxx is next.

Two observations: First, that phone came on AMAZINGLY fast. Second, the boot animation is stale. I know it's a "DROID", but I REALLY was hoping for a boot animation similar to Moto X.

I just went to the Droid Ultra Thread here on androidforums.com for the first time. It's funny to see that the same 3 people that are posting here are posting there as well. Well, make it 4 now that I posted there.

Sometimes I feel like I'm at the bottom of the Grand Canyon yelling and all I hear is an empty echo coming back.

It's a strange feeling being in a pre-release thread like this. Makes me wonder if I'm on the right track here.

I agree. The two things making me keep the X in the running vs. the Maxx are the size of the X (I prefer a smaller phone) and the lack of buzz around these new Droids. It does make me concerned about the aftermarket and developer support for this line. But then, I've been using a Rezound for 2 years, so I'm used to owning a red-headed stepchild.

Well, I'll add to the number of people posting. I'm 99% sure that I am getting this phone next week (if I can) but don't want to preorder because I want to see how big it is, and how it feels in the hand, before I commit to upgrade. I'm using a Droid 3 right now (and I've been on Android 2.x since May 2010; I'm really itching for JB for a while now!) and the Maxx's weight is the same as the D3, but the display is a full inch larger, so I just want to make sure that I'm comfortable with the size. I'm definitely upgrading to something very soon - my D3's keyboard is flaky (the spacebar works intermittently) and the volume down button no longer works. Both are not that big a deal - volumes can be set with software/apps and the onscreen keyboard works fine, but this phone is ready to rest for a while.

However, there are so many things that I avoid doing with my phone right now in order to make the battery last all day and I'm *really* looking forward to having a phone where I don't need to worry about that at all.

As for unlimited vs. capped data plan, I made that change earlier this year when the family had three smartphones and three LTE tablets and shared data was actually going to save money. I've had one month in seven now where we went over the cap, but that was on the last day of the billing cycle and when my daughter had no broadband at her apartment at college and was using the tablet as a WiFi hotspot for all of her other devices. Since then we haven't come close to the cap.

I went into a VZW store early this week just to see if they knew if they were getting the Maxx next Tuesday. The salesman told me that they are never sure, but they had cases and accessories in for the Maxx already, so he was pretty sure that the phone was coming soon.

I'm traveling on Tuesday next week but it turns out that my hotel is across the street from a Verizon Wireless store so I may stop in first thing to check out the Maxx.

I agree 100% on the handle it before buying.

I have the Droid Maxx on pre-order. It is shipped to my Verizon store. When it comes in I will go check it out and if it "fits me" I will complete the transaction. Otherwise I will walk away.

My contact at that store told me that's the way it works. When it ships we both will get an e-mail. They ship 2nd day Fed Ex so we can track it.

I have gotten no e-mails other than a certification of the order. When it ships I will let you know.

Car Dock? This is why I haven't pre-ordered (Bionic is getting long in the tooth, but I still use it daily for navigation). If I know that they will have a Motorola Car Dock, I would pre-order. Also, I'm hoping Costco might carry it with a bonus bag like they did for the Bionic (car dock, desk dock, etc).

I've used the Bionic since hour one of its release. Simply great. It is difficult to fathom that the Maxx is thinner than the Bionic.

I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon to review it with my Verizon Wireless store.

Same here and I won't have to (can't) put an extended battery in it. My Bionic sill still get pretty close to 24 hrs. of moderate use on the extended. 48 hours on the Maxx!!! that is incredible. I have preordered and today Verizon is saying it has been shipped and will be delivered in 2 business days. No tracking data yet. :)

Agreed, compared to the wild ride that was the Galaxy Nexus pre-release thread, it does seem like this thread has crickets in it. I'm excited about this phone, and already have clearance from Spousal Unit. I just want to wait for root before I get it, which hopefully won't be long after release.

As long as the internal storage isn't chopped up in some funky way like it was in the Razr Maxx, 32GB should be fine for me. Still not sure why phone manufacturers are going away from MicroSD cards and sticking with 16GB. I believe most of us would gladly pay a little more money for more internal storage and/or a MicroSD card slot, rather than monthly overage charges from our carrier for using too much data. At least that's the way I feel about it. :p

as it sits now no one really even has this phone in their hands yet, lets let it get released and see what happens then. im sure root will be achieved but bootloader might be a different story...

I too am buying the Maxx because of its near identicalness to the X and obvious benefits

<snip>

Thanks for the reply. I know there's a few review phones out in the wild but didn't know if some developers have had their hands on one yet. If the Moto X and the Ultra/Maxx are as similar as they appear to be, hopefully once root is discovered for one it will be valid for all models.

I still get two days between charges with my Razr Maxx; I'm not a heavy power user so I should (hope to?) get 3 days on the Droid Maxx.

Here is another Ultra unboxing..

Motorola Droid Ultra Unboxing | PhoneDog

I wonder if Verizon is just sending out Ultra's for reviews/unboxing's.
Interesting. Honestly, I don't know what the draw of the Ultra is, other than it being cheaper than the Maxx. It has less battery, less memory, and a crappy shiny plastic back. Yes, the Maxx is a bit thicker, but it's still not thick compared to what most of us are carrying now or have carried in the past, and I'd gladly make the tradeoff for the insane battery life of the Maxx.

Verizon wireless site is not reporting that the Droid Maxx I ordered online on 8/2 has been shipped to arrive in two business days. No tracking number yet.

If they do two day it should go out today. They may also overnight. I have had pre-orders before that said two day and they did overnight (reduces chance of early delivery). There system can be slow to update sometimes also. I am sure you will have it on Tuesday.
